IOS 12 combining text messages

After updating to IOS 12 my IPhone is combining text messages from family members. My wife and I had a text going and then my daughter got added to it & then my son got added. Each phone has only their number under IMessage as a Send/Receive and each person can only see the messages they send and my response. I can see all the messages from each person and my response. When my wife sends a text it has her name but once my son or daughter send their text the text message changes to their name. We only have one Apple ID for the family but i've been reading that might be the problem. Under Apple ID their are a bunch of number listed including my wife, son, and daughter's numbers so I was thinking about deleting them from my Apple ID but I don't want them to lose any text messages or other information.

Yeah, but you can’t control what other people do with their phones. So if 2 of your friends share an Apple ID, their messages are combining on your phone. Kind of out of your control and not a great move on Apple since they know lots of people share Apple IDs, wether they support it or not.

I also read that several people got their own Apple ID and it did not correct the problem.

Those of us that followed Apple's instructions not to share Apple IDs are having zero, nada, zip, diddly-squat, nothing, zilch, bupkus problems. There is absolutely no benefit to a shared ID and it does cause problems. Unfortunately, Apple is unable to prevent users from ignoring instructions.

Configure your devices correctly and your problem will go bye-bye.

Philly_Phan, I'm sorry but that is simply not true. You also could be affected if you communicate with others who are sharing an Apple ID. You may not understand that just because YOU don't share your ID doesn't mean that others don't and if YOU try to message them YOUR messages may go to the wrong recipient.

I know the point you are trying to make, but please understand that sharing an Apple ID has worked for people for many years and they are frustrated because the issue feels like it's from the update and not from something they were doing wrong.

If you are going to be helpful to people, please try to enlighten them as to why they are having issue and not belittle them for what you perceive as their wrongdoing.

Years ago I shared an Apple ID and hated it from the beginning. Shared contacts, calendars, etc. It was a mess and was so thankful when they released Family Sharing. As soon as I could I got everyone their own Apple IDs and haven’t had a problem since.

I don’t experience this issue with any of my contacts that have upgraded to iOS 12 as well so I guess I have to assume they aren’t sharing Apple IDs either.

Thank you. You’re clearly the keeper of all wisdom and knowledge. What you fail to address, oh wise one, is that for some of us it has nothing to do with our sharing accounts. Apparently my sister and her kids do or did share an account, and now when I text my sister or nephew, it only goes to my niece. If you don’t have anything constructive to add to the conversation, just stay out of it. We’re lookjng for answers, not useless judgments.

Yes it is true. Persons that are sharing an Apple ID are causing you problems. Apple does not have the legal authority to force them to configure their iPhones correctly. Simply because they lucked out without problems for several years changes zero, nada, zip, diddly-squat, nothing, zilch, bupkus.

I downloaded iOS 12 when it was first available in September. For a week, I had the same frustrating problem with myself and my teenage daughter. Our iMessage threads were merged into one under my Apple ID with my Apple ID icon. So everything I had texted to myself was showing up in that conversation. It was extremely annoying and I thought about setting up family sharing with an Apple ID for my daughter, but she did not want to do that because she did not want to lose her data with her apps. So, after many different ways to try to solve this including generating a new text message & typing her contact name in, which would show her in the contact and then as soon as I sent the message it would merge it again, I found a solution. I started a new text message & typed in her phone number with the area code, and ever since then, I was able to retrieve her thread by itself with all of our pre-existing iMessages intact. Now I can go to iMessages and click on her thread as usual, and it will only sent it to her phone.

This worked for me, so far. But I had to delete all prior texts of those who were combined before I manually typed in the phone number. For each person, after putting in the phone number, I hit return whixh took me to the text field. I did not click their name, to be safe. I then sent each a test message and they stayed separate.

My family of 3 had the same problem. We had one apple id that we shared in addition to family sharing. We all made our own apple id's now, still have family sharing. None of that helped. Finally I read somewhere on here to delete any texts that were group texts to all of us or between the three of us. That broke the "infected" link and now it's all fixed. Hope this helps.

I am happy to report that my merging issue has corrrected itself! It’s been 48 hours and it has not reverted back. Grant it I am shutting my phone down at night because it would seem to revert back over night. We shall see what happenes going forward. Please not I did everything suggested in this thread but what I did again was log out and back into my phone which was having the issue. Family members have not upgraded to iOS 12 yet. Time will tell

You keep saying we’re supposed to get separate Apple IDs to fix the issue. Please explain how with 4 people sharing an Apple ID, am I the only one having this issue. The other three people on my ID aren’t having issues. Just me. And, it started AFTER I downloaded iOS 12. I did that because the microphones on my son’s iPhone quit working after downloading iOS 11.3. I wanted to try and prevent the microphone issue, but caused other problems.

First of all Apple is responsible whether they supported it or not, it was something that obviously a lot of people were doing and I can guarantee they knew it. Don't you think it odd that this little "upgrade" was left off the list of things changing with IOS 12? I have had my ID for years and added my daughter before Family Sharing was even an option. Before Family Sharing was an option, if we as a family wanted the same app or song we would have to purchase two copies. That is why we had one ID. Secondly, do not call people stupid when you do not know the circumstances. Resorting to saying things like that only shows your ignorance in having to resort to name calling for lack of an intelligent or helpful response.
