Ipad Pro 2018 11" - Screen Protector Issue

So here's a question that has left me baffled. I have a new 11" Ipad Pro and all good.

However, after applying a Face ID friendly glass screen protector, (I've tried about 5 different brands) in certain lighting conditions the touch screen does not respond. If I then put my hand over the sensors it responds perfectly.

Just to add even if I only stick a screen protecor on half of the ipad completely avoiding the sensors the same issue happens when trying to work on the protector side but not on the part of the screen that remains uncovered.

Without the screen protector on all works perfectly. Its pretty annoying though because it happens a lot.

If anyone can explain or fix this I'd be very grateful. I note on a lot of Amazon reviews that people complain that screen protectors impact sensitivity of the screen but I wonder if they have the same problem as me with the sensors??

I also spoke with Apple support and they had no idea what could be causing it.

I found one of the other posts on this, but not the larger post.

BTW,

This 2018 iPad Pro touch response issue does not happen with thin, plastic film screen protectors.

ONLY glass screen protectors are affecting the touch sensitivity of the 2018 iPad Pro models.

Someone mentioned replacing a glass screen protector with a thin film screen protector does not affect the touch sensitivity of the 2018 iPad Pro models.

I agree with you in many ways. And I would be the first to put a good quality screen protector on my iPad Pro 11 if one was made that didn't cause issues with touch. I don't like matte film types, so they are out. If Zagg ever finds the way to make one that actually works, I'll happily buy one. Till then however, touch is more important to me, so my screen remains naked while in use, protected in a good case, when not in use.

I have used iPads for 9 years without a screen protector.

I just use good quality proretctive cases for all of my iPads to protect the entire iPad and screen.

I have been using stylii on my iPads since the my first, 2010 iPad and had never scratched the screen with any of the stylii I used.

The places these iPads have been have not been very dust or dirt free, either.

I do clean my iPad screens fairly consistently and regularly, though.

I use an iPad 2 with disc type stylii for nearly 5 years and have not put any scratches in the screen.

I use my over three year old iPad Pro with a softer, fine tipped Bluetooth stylus and have not scratched the screen of my iPad Pro, either.

I think keeping the iPad screens clean has been one of the main reasons for this not happening, though.

We've all really been brainwashed to believe we "need" a screen protector on an iPad. iPads aren't typically bounced around like in a purse, are rarely dropped or beat up like a cell phone can be subjected to. The coating on the new Super Retina screens is holding up remarkably well on both our iPad Pro 11 2018 devices, tbh. Just enjoy your iPad and stop worrying about needing a screen protector.

No-one has brainwashed anyone. Is it that surprising that after spending £800 on an iPad we want to protect it? Maybe it’s not thrown around like a phone but it may go in a rucksack or have things stacked with it. Without a protector you do get micro-scratches over time, doesn’t matter how hard you try, even if they’re mostly only visible in strong light. It would just be nice if Apple acknowledged it’s an issue rather than pretend it’s not - and if it’s not an issue why did they replace my iPad without question? I am so pleased I’m not the only one having this problem so I know I’m not going mad - it was infuriating trying to type or doing things and finding it not responding properly. Gone back to the 2017 model which didn’t have these niggles and also has a headphone jack and stiffer chassis.

That's why my iPad Pro 11, is in a case covering the front and back. There are loads of not very expensive cases you can get on Amazon. You can get more expensive ones, which include Bluetooth Keyboards as well. There are other ways to protect your iPad screen without putting a screen protector on it. Don't think I'm anti-screen protector. I'm not. Both our iPhone's definitely have screen protectors (sold by and installed at the Apple Store). And I would use one with my iPad if there was one that worked. But there isn't one, so I have chosen another way to protect my screen.

BTW, my previous iPad was without a screen protector before upgrading to the iPad Pro 11. It too was in a hard shell Bluetooth keyboard case like my now Pro 11 is. There were NO micro scratches on my screen when I got rid of it.

All - It is perhaps interesting to note the Apple’s “Liquid Retina” screen technology doesn’t seem to have widely reported problems with screen protectors (laminated or otherwise) with the iPhone XR. This particular compatibility issue seems to lie squarely with the latest generation of iPad Pro.

Likewise, manufacturers of screen protectors for the new generation of “Liquid Retina” iPhones seem to be able to produce screen protectors that work equally happily with FaceID - with notches in all the necessary places.

If Zagg, the industry leader in screen protectors for iPads, and other mobile devices, cannot solve the issue with their screen protectors for the new 2018 iPad Pro models, no other screen protector maker is going to solve this issue, either.

The first iPad screen protector maker to solve this issue with the 2018 iPad Pro models is going to make a boatload of cash for awhile.
