Update AppleID Settings - macOS Catalina

After installing Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. I put in my password, and then it asks for my Mac password, which I give it. Then after a few minutes the message pops back up again. Happens on both my Macbook and iMac.

Logging in and out didn't help on my MacBook, there is too much to delete/re-add for me to want to try it on my iMac.

Hi Michael! This was the solution to my problem!

  • iCloud Keychain was not ticked on my MacBook Pro 2017 after updating to Catalina
  • Given that the solution was to confirm my identity using another device (entering my iPhone's Passcode on my Mac to confirm my identity), this makes sense to me - but I've been wrong before, once or twice... a day for 50 years!

If this is the case, then the UX of this process needs improvement, obviously. How many people would think to look at the status of their iCloud Keychain when faced with this behaviour? The way it currently works causes you to think something has broken or at the very least is not working (eg: iCloud is too busy, etc).

Thank-you for your post!

Peter

Has the same problem on my Mac Pro Catalina installation. Apple may have corrected a sever bug as I was able to clear the AppleID flag and get all functions including keychain working by putting in my iCloud password and User password this morning after 2 attempts. All services are working now including iCloud Keychain.

Looks like they may have fixed on the back-end whatever the issue was. After a restart this morning, I was able to go back to the Apple ID setting, enter my Apple ID password, wait wait wait, enter my Mac password, wait wait, then it prompted for my my iPad unlock passcode. I did not have to reset keychain or change my apple ID password or anything.

Bummer. That didn't work for me. I followed the steps exactly. When I clicked the Keychain check box, it asked for my passcode for my Mac. Eventually the Keychain check box was checked. (It didn't ask for the passcode of any other of my devices, and it didn't display a 6 digit code.) The warning on the AppleID icon was gone, and I thought my problem was solved. I quite System Preferences. When I reopened System Preferences a few minutes later, the AppleID warning was back and when I scrolled down to Keychain it was Unchecked! Frustrating!

It finally worked for me! I did what some others said worked for them:

• Went to appleid.apple.com in Safari on Mac and changed my ID password.

• It asked for my 6 digit code which appeared on my iPhone. I entered the code on my Mac

• I opened System Preferences on my Mac and clicked on the Apple ID logo. It asked for my password, and I entered my NEW one.

• I scrolled down and checked Keychain. It thought for awhile, then asked for my Mac passcode.

• I quit System Preferences, and then reopened it. Lo and behold, the warning sign on the Apple ID icon was finally gone!

I hope this helps someone who wasn't helped by some of the other suggestions.

The hint with the keychain didn't work for me, since it was ticked on already, and toggling it, had no effect. I had really to sign-off with my AppleID, delete the local replicas from an iCloud, and re-assign my MacBook Pro again to my AppleID.

The effect now is, that the MacBook now is treated as a new device added to my AppleID, and I have to confirm now every new login to, iTunes, Password, keychain entry, etc.

Hope this helps, in case the keychain advice is not working.

Ok I solved this problem on 3 different Mac's I upgraded to Catalina and was having this problem. Basically you need to completely sign out of iCloud account, reboot, and then sign back in. The steps below are how I fixed:

1) Boot into safe mode (by holding down shift key after you power on)

2) Login and go to Preferences, AppleID, Overview.

3) If you get "Update AppleID Settings" then try signing into iCloud and Desktop again.

4) If the "Update AppleID Settings" message comes back again, then click SignOut button.

5) Choose the options to Keep Copy/Delete of iCloud data.

6) After you are signed out, shut down and reboot in Normal mode.

7) Go back to Preferences, AppleID, Overview and sign back into your iCloud account.

I have the same issues with fixing this problem.

Up till now no luck.

I reached out to Apple and they've made a ticket for it.

Hopefully they're gonna provide a solution.

Will keep you posted.

By the way, the AppleSupport member I spoke to wasn't aware of this thread and therefor the problem.

I also have other issues since installing Catalina.

I lost my iTunes music library.

Books.

And my calendar/delegates are gone.

The first two problems were solved when I logged into the MacBook AppStore.

That finally started synchronising my music and books.

Have not been able to fix Calendar up till now.

This is what I am experiencing too.

None of the suggestions have worked for me, I've entered the iCloud and computer password more than 20 times, now iMessage stopped working, when I enter the iCloud password to login into iMessage I get "An error occurred during authentication"

I have tried all the fixes so far. It also says my 'keychain "login" cannot be found to store'. My options are either "Cancel" (which gives me the "An unknown error occurred") or "Set to Defaults". If I follow that latter path it still ends up with an error.

I've tried logging in and changing my password so many times now. It's been DAYYYSSS. Why did I update??

So on my mac I finally got Keychain checked but it's still saying to update apple ID settings.

Macbook Pro is on the same boat so not even trying with that one anymore.

Added bonus, now I can't turn Keychain on on my iPhone.

Also in the same situation where I have too much on icloud to fully sign out and back in.

But if thats the only choice...

Change your Mac password...

1) System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Change Password.

2) I do sync my Keychain via iCloud so I confirmed that the checkbox was ticked in AppleID->iCloud.

3) Go back to AppleID click on the warning, enter iCloud Password. If/when prompted enter your new computer password.

4) Watch the red dot disappear!!!

5) If you want (I did) now you can change your computer password back to what it was.

This solution worked for me; have been good 5 days now. I did not want to logout of my iCloud account at any cost...

By any chance do you have multiple Macs logged in with the same iCloud account, and different computer login passwords?
