Update AppleID Settings - macOS Catalina

After installing Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. I put in my password, and then it asks for my Mac password, which I give it. Then after a few minutes the message pops back up again. Happens on both my Macbook and iMac.

Logging in and out didn't help on my MacBook, there is too much to delete/re-add for me to want to try it on my iMac.

Hi Michael! This was the solution to my problem!

  • iCloud Keychain was not ticked on my MacBook Pro 2017 after updating to Catalina
  • Given that the solution was to confirm my identity using another device (entering my iPhone's Passcode on my Mac to confirm my identity), this makes sense to me - but I've been wrong before, once or twice... a day for 50 years!

If this is the case, then the UX of this process needs improvement, obviously. How many people would think to look at the status of their iCloud Keychain when faced with this behaviour? The way it currently works causes you to think something has broken or at the very least is not working (eg: iCloud is too busy, etc).

Thank-you for your post!

Peter

Had to log out (fully) and back in to iCloud.

After this it finally worked. Tried changing passwords and all that multiple times.

I also have several macs at home.

Tip for when you’re logging out of cloud:

When asked to create a copy of iCloud docs, hit yes if needed BUT - make sure that in your Home folder, you do not already have a folder named “icloud Drive(archive)” if you do, make sure you delete the old folder with that name FIRST or the log out process never finishes!

Also note, I did not try the changing Mac password method. So try that first.

I hate to weigh in in the middle of the discussion, but I had the worst of the symptoms described in this forum: nothing worked at all, even signing out of my account and signing back in.

With Apple Support on the line, we created a new user account with administrator status, and, lo, it worked.

The Apple support person suggested I erase and re-instal the entire system. I agreed with him; I could do it, because it's all backed up.

I also agreed that I should not just restore application configurations from Time Machine, so I didn't. After re-installing Catalina, software configuration was an irritant for the first hour or so, but for the past day, all has been working smoothly.

I was in the same boat as most here. Kept entering the password over and over again and no luck. I paused for 3 days hoping that maybe Apple would push an update. So today I decided to try again. Here is what I did and it worked.

My MacBook Pro's password was the same as iCloud password. So after remembering a while back that Apple separated the two and advised to make them different, I changed the password on my MacBook Pro to be something different from iCloud. I then logged out of the macOS, logged back in and went back to iCloud clicked the update. It asked me for iCloud password, I entered that, then asked for Mac password, I entered the newly changed one (different from iCloud now), then it asked me for numeric code I use to unlock my iPhone (this prompt was new this round), and voila! It all worked and no more loop.

If you are in the similar boat as I am I hope this will help you :)

Cheers!

So I’ve completely erased my HD, reinstalled Catalina (Great fun with a 3mb download speed) and still the stupid message comes up and keychain won’t enable.. if anyone wants a late 2015 MacBook Pro, it’s in a few pieces just outside my window.

Im sure Apples tag line used to be “it just works”...

Like **** it does.

The issue would seem to be related to the process used when setting up the Mac initially with the Apple ID. Maybe do the fresh install and do not log in at all with the Apple ID at all during the setup. Wait to do that once the Mac is up and running fully. Then it will go through the Apple ID joining and setup things but not be while the initial account was being setup.

I got the prompt to update iCloud that would never resolve. I was unable to sign out of iCloud. I was unable to check keychain. I changed my iCloud password. Nothing worked. This, in addition to horrendous networking issues preventing communication with other computers.

MY SOLUTION: I restored a backup of Mojave and now all is well!

I've been a happy Mac user for 5 years and until Catalina every OS update has been smooth and problem free, even early releases. In this case I'm going to wait a few months before giving Catalina another shot.

Add some more data. My iMac gets the notification badge any time

I unlock on iDevice. I go through the "update data" process, lock the iDevice,

then unlock and bag, notification badge.

However, I think I may have found the culprit. I go to my Apple ID

in System Preferences on the iMac, then disable "Find My iMac",

an voila, no more stinking badges. I have tried a couple times now

it it seems to have stopped. It seems there is some issue with the

new "Find My" app. With my iMac, turning off "Find My" is not that big

an issue since if some one breaks into my house, there are a lot more

important things than my iMac I will be worried about. However, with

a laptop, that could be a serious issue.

I had the same problem with the prompts. What fixed it for me was to log on to appleid.com. It sent a verifcation to allow access to my apple id. Accepted the prompt and then logged out of appleid.com. Went back to the iCloud setting on the mac, and ticked the Keychain box. Entered the appleid password and then the computer password. The prompt disappeared and has not came back even after multiple reboots. Two different accounts were doing the same thing and this fixed it on both.
