Update AppleID Settings - macOS Catalina

After installing Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. I put in my password, and then it asks for my Mac password, which I give it. Then after a few minutes the message pops back up again. Happens on both my Macbook and iMac.

Logging in and out didn't help on my MacBook, there is too much to delete/re-add for me to want to try it on my iMac.

Hi Michael! This was the solution to my problem!

  • iCloud Keychain was not ticked on my MacBook Pro 2017 after updating to Catalina
  • Given that the solution was to confirm my identity using another device (entering my iPhone's Passcode on my Mac to confirm my identity), this makes sense to me - but I've been wrong before, once or twice... a day for 50 years!

If this is the case, then the UX of this process needs improvement, obviously. How many people would think to look at the status of their iCloud Keychain when faced with this behaviour? The way it currently works causes you to think something has broken or at the very least is not working (eg: iCloud is too busy, etc).

Thank-you for your post!

Peter

I gave up and called Apple support. They answered in two minutes and were very helpful in getting the problem fixed in a matter of minutes. In essence, you have to sign out of your Apple ID and then sign back in, something one never does on a day to day basis. It fixed the problem for me. However, it is still a bug in the OS and Apple should not miss or ignore this one.

have had same problem with keychain refusing to stay ticked and endless Apple ID password prompts for 2 days... after reading through 12 pages of forum discussion today, this finally worked:

signed out of apple ID

switched off Mac and switched on again (not a restart)

signed in to Apple ID - was prompted for my iPad lock numeric PIN

entered PIN

bingo.... everything worked

not a great upgrade this - 25% of my 1650 music albums have lost the album artwork embedded in the mp3 files (which used to display fine in iTunes)

I moved to Mac because I hated Windows 10... sometimes I wonder.... come on Apple, do better than this!!

I'm having the same issue. I tried what you said Michael and it didn't work. My keychain was not checked so I checked it and it asked me to enter my apple ID password a couple times and also my macbook password and then it finally checked the box but a short while later it asked me for my apple ID again. Then I decided to check to see if Keychain was still checked and it wasn't checked anymore. No clue what is going on. I tried checking the Keychain box again and entering my password again and it just keeps asking for my apple ID

I had exactly the same problems you are describing here. I must have entered my Apple ID password and my Admin password to my MacBook Pro at least 20 times. I checked Keychain but every time it would disconnect. I turned my Mac off during the night and the following morning I went to enter the passwords again. Right after entering them for like the third time, it asked me for the passcode I use to unlock my iPad which I introduced. After waiting for perhaps half an hour I could not quit the system preference app and had to force quit it. That did the job!! That was yesterday and all seems well since then. Keychain is now checked and the iCloud setting is not asking for my passwords any more.

I kept trying because I did not want to change my Apple ID password and I did not want to sign out of iCloud as it would be a hassle to get all my data back on my Mac without duplicates. My advice to those with this issue is just keep trying and it might eventually be OK. I also signed in to the Mac store and Apple Music which I had not done since the update to Catalina before the issue was fixed.

I hope this helps.

After upgrading to Catalina, it asks me to update my Apple ID settings. On entering the password it would cycle through several error messages and requested input with no success. Keychain choice was not in my iCloud backup list. I did manage to partially disconnect from iCloud but that did not change the issue. A couple of other oddities. Apple mail would not sync with some previously used accounts. In fact when I tried to send an email from my iCloud account, the email send window kept flashing up on the screen. Another oddity was that I couldn't add a CD to my music library, the list of songs on the CD would flash up then disappear, similar to the email issue. On login the sharing window of System Preferences would automatically open. Each time Safari was started it would open a login page for Outlook365. To use Parallels I had to restore the virtual machine from Time Machine before it could be accessed.

Soooooo.....my solution was to create a new user account with administration capabilities. Lo and behold, it seems too have worked. I can authenticate to iCloud. So far it seems to be fine. Now I need to move my folders to this new user along with Safari bookmarks. Passwords I will due by hand although there are instructions available for moving the key chain data to the new environment. This is relatively easy as I keep a log of them which is usually ;-) up to date.

As to the cause of this, I have no idea. It should be noted that my virtual machine hd space is over 40Gig.

Hope this helps some one.

I was having the same issue. To resolve it I tried updating my iCloud Keychain by going to system setting, Apple ID, clicking on iCloud and placing a checkmark in the keychain box. After putting in all my passwords (several times) it just stopped and the checkmark had disappeared. So, I turned on Find My Mac and then went back and marked the keychain in iCloud again. After putting in my passwords, everything worked just fine.

Yes, this has been a problem for me even in Mojave after the last update.

I DO NOT WANT MY LOCAL PASSWORDS UPLOADED TO iCLOUD IN ANY MANNER. That's just poor security practice, and in my day job my company doesn't allow it.

Yet I can't get rid of the "Update Apple ID Settings" thing on my Macbook Pro without giving it my local passwords to put into iCloud.

I had this problem and I did everything and it still persists. I have several devices. I don't know if it it makes a difference but I am just so disgusted with Apple's QA lately. I am tired of being prompted for icloud password every day!!!!

What I see consistently is that it always unchecks the keychain access. It's a daily thing. The rest of options are left alone. I sign off and sign back on and I get the same thing the next day.

Apple has been slowly losing my trust and allegiance. This Catalina login issue is just another in the long line of early issues with their releases of "upgrades". I had to enter my credentials at least 6-7 times for the keychain to finally engage. The credentials upgrade is still there. Come on apple. Don't continue to make us all regret or hesitate to upgrade until you get all the bugs figured out.

Long story short. In my case the keychain didn't help. The system is still asking for upgraded credentials and to login again after I've logged in. Observation - the media and purchases is clouded over and says that I'm not signed in even though I am.

Nov 9, 2019 5:30 AM in response to jmschedler

Update to my reply i just posted.

I did get my keychain to engage. The credentials were still being asked for so I rebooted. This didn't help but I did go into the app store and it was asking for my login so I did and now the credentials are no longer being asked for.

I don't know if it was the reboot after getting the keychain to engage (after several entries of my icloud password and login password) or just signing into the app store separately. One of the two or the combination after getting the keychain to engage finally removed that dreaded RED CIRCLED 1 above the system settings for apple ID.

I fixed this several weeks ago by calling Apple support. They walked me through the process which essentially was just signing out from my Apple cloud account and then signing back in. It disappeared on both my MacBooks. I am unsure whether I could do this again on my own. I do agree that this should not have been an issue in the first release and subsequent updates. Just call support, the more complaints they get will get the point across.

Another update

Mine has not reset so it seems to have worked

again I had to enter my iCloud password and computer password several times before my keychain engaged. I did not log out of iCloud. After my keychain engaged I rebooted and made sure I signed in to the App Store (it said I wasn’t signed in and that icon was greyed out). So between getting the keychain to engage, rebooting and signing in separately to the App Store it seems to have worked

Same issue here. kept getting prompted to update my Apple ID and Keychain would never finish configuring in iCloud.

It ended up my firewall was blocking a special domain that iCloud used to authenticate users. Unblocking the url in my firewall fixed the issue.

A simpler alternative might be to sign out and back in while connected to your phones hotspot.
