Very slow first iPhone and iPad photo sync over usb-a with Catalina

I updated to Catalina last night on my iMac. Today I've tried synching my iPhone Xr and my iPad Pro via USB/Finder (separately) to my iMac and the synch is very very slow. The iPhone never finished after a few hours and I'm trying my iPad now but I don't see any progress in the changes I had made to the photos (I deleted some before I synched, but the deleted ones still show on my iPad). I do have several thousand photos. Is the Photo Cache being rebuilt or something? Should I delete that and start again? Should I sync one photo folder at a time to start with? Is there anything else I should try? Previously I had posted issues with the latest iTunes in this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250270137

and solved that by using an older version of iTunes. I would hate to think that Catalina will be as problematic as iTunes for synching photos was before. Any help/advice would be appreciated, thank you.

I finally got (most of) my photos loaded... I split them into folders of 500 photos or less and processed them one at a time: I left a small (10 images) folder always on, and I'd add a new 2nd folder and let to process (by leaving most folders off, it processed in "only" 10 minutes). If they loaded okay, I backed up iPod Photo Cache to another folder. If most loaded okay and only a few were black, I moved them to a bad images folder that I don't sync. I then unchecked the new folder (leaving just the sample one) and synced again (this would just take a few seconds to send the delete command to the iPad). If the photos did NOT load okay (lots of black images), I deleted iPod Photo cache and copied the last good backup back into the main images folder. I then rebooted the Mac and iPad (rebooting the MBP is required to get images working for a while again, I don't know about the iPad).

Once I got to my iPhone X photos (.HEIC files instead of .JPG files), I never had any black images. I could have possibly processed them all at once, but I stayed to the previous method (folders of about 500 images each). Once all the photos were processed, I checked sync All folders, which took about 3 tries to get them all copied over.

(All that being said, I haven't dared sync another device with a different screen resolution and start all over again. But also, this time I remembered to back up iPad Photo Cache. (Hint: Time Machine does not back it up.).)

I see what you are saying but we didn't communicate well. Yes, I had done that, as I had explained above. I thought you meant "did I delete the photos ON THE DEVICE" (doing something ON the device) - not through my Mac.

Anyway, yes, I had done that. Taking an hour is incorrect though, with my 25k photos the whole deleting process took 9 hours and then another 3+ to sync them.

If it was me who accidentally marked this SOLVED I am very sorry. I have no recollection of doing this (don't even know how to do it).

Thank you again for your detailed information and I agree, it's certainly not linear, your photo library is similar in size to mine and so is the time it took for the sync. And yes, in the old days, the sync was very fast!

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Just to clarify, when I wrote:

  • "uncheck syncing of photos", I meant uncheck sync to Photos app on Catalina with my selection of albums to sync
  • "recheck syncing of photos", I meant recheck sync to Photos app on Catalina with my selection of albums to sync

One more thing, I forgot to mention that it took approx 1 hr to complete the sync of 13k worth of photos/videos.

This is not much of an update, but it is what I have. From my Apple senior support guy:

Hi Stephen!

I just wanted to reach out in regards to our case with long sync times. I’ve received a small update on the case from our engineering team.

While we don’t have an answer yet as to what is causing the issue the engineering team has escalated it to a senior level within their department for further analysis. As soon as I hear more I’ll be sure to be in touch!

Some advice from a columnist who I contacted and writes about Apple issues, for language to use when we contact Apple:

It's a "regression" error, in that it breaks previously available functionality. For extra points, you could call it that as it might cause them to take a closer look.

He said he would keep me in mind if he hears of a solution. Meanwhile, keep reporting to Apple!

@Squiddz:

I agree with you that this needs to be fixed and has to work as designed. That is why I called the support hotline and spent a lot of time on the phone with Apple to make sure they understand what the issue is. That is the only way to ensure that the problem gets fixed in my opinion.

Unleashing one’s frustration in this forum here does not help anyone, it only distracts from those postings which are helpful (go and hug a tree instead).

The same with Apple bashing here, Apple does not monitor this forum, there is an official problem reporting site for that.

So if everyone would have called the Apple support number (I have posted he link) or created a problem report (I have posted the link) we would have gotten much more attention and the problem would have been raised internally within Apple a lot faster.

Anyhow, the very helpful, support engineer confirmed that Apple is working on a solution which will be released thru an update for Catalina in the (hopefully near) future.

Minor (useless) feedback:

Hi Stephen,

I’ve re-affirmed with the Engineering team that they are still working on resolving the issue. As of now I do not have an ETA but as soon as they provide me an update I will be sure to let you know right away.

So, update 10.15.3 came out a couple of days ago and I immediately updated my iMac and tested to see if photos would sync like they did for years (but not the last year). No luck. Didn't work.

Photo management used to matter to Apple. The fact that such a lapse as this can go on for so long suggests that those of us who care about photo syncing are a dying breed and are such a small customer base for Apple that fixing our problem isn't worth their trouble.

There are a number of alternative ways to deal with photos on my iPad, but none are as good as what Apple used to do. Oh well. They are just better than what Apple does now.

Well, as expected, this does not seem to be going anywhere... The engineers already requested two sets of data (which I have already sent) and I have been told the issue has now been escalated to the highest level... but the disclaimer was than when this happens, it takes a lot of time to get issues resolved.

It took me awhile to get all 20K+ photos on both my iPhone and iPad (glitches occurred). I've only just now checked to see if it really works. I synced with a new audio book. Took 2 minutes. Didn't mess with the photos and the book went on, and the old deleted books went off. It seems like it is back to where it was 13 months ago, i.e. you can actually sync. I am, of course, happy that this basic function is back again. However, I cannot say I am pleased with Apple for letting such a basic function go bad for 13 months. It was nice to know I had company though. Thanks group. Steve

Hiya - I agree with all you've said. I'm having 100% success with all my sync functions now and am very happy. But am disappointed it took so long to get sorted.

Over on the threads where people are using the Photos app, they are still having issues (duplicates, blank boxes instead of photos) so I hope that THEIR fix doesn't break OUR sync.

I certainly hope theirs gets fixed very soon. I love being able to sync again.

Best of luck to you and stay safe! And thanks to all for participating.
