At first I thought it was the case because it had no holes at the bottom, so it was covering the speaker and mic, but even without it there would be an echo. So I took my phone during the week of purchase to T-Mobile and the manager was not helpful at all. He kept telling me it’s normal, it happens sometimes, it’s a network problem, the phone is not defective. But he told me my only options were to send it to Apple or Get a different one with my insurance. He didn’t even try to help, nor touched my phone at all!

The closest Apple store to my town is 2 hrs away, so I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy instead. They checked my phone and even though I saw the screen showed “issues found” they said the phone was working properly, but they could send it out to Apple to have it checked and it would take about a week. I work from my phone, so I can’t afford to be without it for a week. It was very frustrating because until this day, there is no solution to this problem online.

I finally visited an Apple Store and thank God the associate knew what he was doing! He took my phone for a few minutes, came back and told me there were no problems with the device, but he had me reset my network settings. IT FIXED THE ISSUE! I can’t believe it was that simple and no one could help me before. I almost purchased a new phone.

It has been months since that day and just a few days ago the echo came back, but it went away by resetting the network settings again.

Before you waste more money on another phone or your time waiting for them to fix your phone, TRY RESETTING YOUR NETWORK SETTINGS.

Hi I’m living in Holland. I have the same problem. I called in today and they asked a lot of things. They tested a lot of things with an analyse etc. Now they told me to come tomorrow to the apple store. They will take it in for reparation.

I told them many people are having this problem but they said they don’t know anything about this. Actually they said that I was the first one. So my advice will be contact them so that we can show them it’s a bigger problem.

My wife and I also have the speaker phone echo problem. We both have iPhone 11 Pro Max phones. When we use the speaker phone on either of our phones, the person we are speaking with, hears their voice echoed. This happens with our phone cases on or off of the phones. It happens regardless of which way the phone is pointed. It seems better if we turn the volume down to the lowest setting, but then we cannot hear our caller’s voice. In short, the speaker phone feature is unusable. Upgraded to iOS 13.2.2 this morning but the problem remains. We did not have this problem with our iPhone 6+ or IPhone 7+ phones. I’m really regretting purchasing the 11 Pro Max!

I’ve both complained and taken it in, the apple “genius” techs ran tests and insisted there’s nothing wrong but did say they’ve heard about echoing issues with the 11 especially when on speakerphone and to remember that during speaker the mic that is used is on the front of the phone in the earpiece not the bottom of the phone. That’s all I was able to get out of them.

I’m getting ready to return both an iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max because they both suffer from extreme call quality issues when on speakerphone. People either can’t hear you at all or you can’t hear them, or there’s an extreme echo on the other person’s end. As soon as the call is taken off of speakerphone the issues go away. This is either a terrible design flaw with the phone or something majorly wrong with the software. This has been going on for months apparently, and Apple has failed to address the problem. This one post has over 400 responses from people saying they’re also experiencing the issue. I didn’t have this problem on my XS Max or X. The phones are nearly identical so I don’t know what APPLE could have changed so substantially to cause this issue.

my other complaint is with the cameras. The wide angle lens is horribly grainy and all 3 lenses suffer from insane lens flare in any well lit areas. This phone seems to be loaded with problems.

The echo on speaker issue happens when I connect to my car on blue tooth.

It happens in or out of the case.

It happens if I turn down the speaker.

It happens if I turn the speaker phone off and on again

I rolled back to a previous IOS and wiped the data.

it happens no matter who I call.

it disrupts the responses I hear from the caller.

This isn’t a design flaw. It’s a safety hazard!

I took the phone in for diagnostics. They said it’s fine.

When I pointed out the echo after a proof-of-issue call they said it was because I was inside the store! 🤣

i called the support line, and they told me to call back on a different phone because they could not understand what I was saying due to the echo.

I have the syslogs.

I have case numbers.

I am not exaggerating. I have the data to prove it’s an issue.

I bought a phone, that does not work like a phone.

I will try again with a completely different “genius” on Saturday.

I will be sure to point out that in the event of an emergency, the speakerphone feature is used to communicate with tactical teams and emergency personnel.

Even if they give me a new phone, the moment I update the IOS to comply with security protocols, my ship is sunk again.

My iPhone is so secure, I can’t even use it! Lol!

It is not the case! We all still have the issue.

I have removed my case.

The microphones are faulty. There is a problem with echoing. Please let us know what we can do to resolve this. We should be able to get a refund.

I have cleared off this phone 3 times now and then re-installed my back up. Still an echo. The speakerphone is not useable on my iphone. Nor on my daughter's or husbands too. They are flawed (and very expensive).

I use my speaker phone to comply with state law. This problem makes it impossible to use my 11 in the car. I am using an old X. My wife is using the 11. Shame $1,000 phone that I can’t use. Recent call to Apple got the response. Try turning down the volume (then can’t hear), Remove cover ( If I can’t use protected cover will Apple cover any damage for free), and back up information and do a hard factory reset. Come on Apple fix the problem. There is no problem with the X, Xs, Xs pro, or Xr. Fix the 11’s or replace them

Unfortunately the same thing happened to my family. Took the phones in got new ones due to the echo. The new ones had the echo still. Case or no case on then. Updated to the latest software version and they still hear the echo. Some Android users don’t hear the echo, but other iPhone and landline users still do. We can try setting up an appointment at a Genius Bar, but the nearest one is 2.5 hours away. Frustrating as we have also spoken to Apple certified techs and nothing appears to be wrong with the phones.

William, you're an experienced user and a high-level contributor to these forums, but the software upgrade you keep recommending has been shown to not provide a solution to what I believe is a serious hardware design flaw.

  • You wrote "If it were a hardware issue a replacement phone would fix it," but the logic of that statement is flawed - if the issue is a hardware design issue, a replacement phone will replicate the problem, not fix it - which is exactly what it has done, for dozens of users, both those I've spoken to myself and many others on various forums. Virtually everyone I know who purchased and is trying to use the 11 has described this problem to me. I dont know about the Plus.

  • You wrote "iOS 13.3.1 fixed this issue for almost everyone." - well, good for them, but when all of our clients, colleagues and friends have been encouraged to upgrade their software to solve this very serious issue, the upgrade DID NOT FIX IT.

This is especially frustrating because of Apple's longstanding pattern of denying a hardware flaw and then finally their engineers come out with a fix in a later model, but they refuse to acknowledge the problem.

Well said jseaver. I am still having the problem, and going into week 3 of working from home here in CA, I am relying on the phone function more than ever. I have a regular iPhone 11, no pro or anything. And like most I’ve seen here the echo is heard by people at the other end, not me. As if the mic is not muting when someone at the other end is speaking, and they are hearing their voice coming out of the speaker bounce back through the mic. Too bad that it seems that the phone function of smartphones these days is secondary to their function as streaming and texting devices or cameras.

I am on conference calls several times a day and have had to resort to using my earbuds. Not my preference, but it works.

I concur. $950 for a phone that I despise. I was actually fine with my SE unitl the battery would not hold more than an hour charge and I broke my mophie. Apple has gone so far downhill it is very disappointing. I must use speaker phone 50% of the time for work and I keep hoping "Crapple" (my new name for Apple) will come up with a fix. I only purchased the 11 because it had Night Mode for pictures and I have already had issues wth a blue dot in many pictures. Then on top of it all, I hate the Face recognition. I Purchased shortly before we all had to wear masks (did not like it before and now worse). So frustrated that I am ready to suck it up and lose $400 to get a model without face recogition and no problems with the speaker. I really had high hopes that were completley crushed by my continuous problems with this iphone 11... that started on day one (and of course apple will not allow me to return even though it is a "lemon". I spent hours on the phone with Apple too and absolutley no help. I did figure out that the Echo problem is worse if I rest the phone on my lap or stomach. It mostly goes away if I lay it sideways on a table or desk next to me. However I cannot usually do that. Nor can I hold it upside down! I use Bluetooth when I can now. However, I use it so much that even when I remove the bluetooth device, it still feels like it is in my ear. So I would prefer the speaker when possible. It wourked great on the much older SE and 7. Unfortunatley, it is rarely possible to use speaker with this phone. DO NOT BUY IT until Capple fixes the problem. IT is extremley annoying to the person on the other end. Night mode and face recognition are dissapointing too! And not only because of the mask use. And I have tried several different cases and also used no case. It makes absolutley no difference. I wish Crapple would stop making excuses and fix the problem. Or at least let us downgrade to the model below the 11 for no addtional price. PLEASE!
