I’ve found that turning on and off the speakerphone function during the call solves it which means it’s not a physical problem. If I hold it vertically facing the screen it happens a lot more than if I hold it horizontally and speak into the bottom about 6” from the phone as well.

Well said jseaver. I am still having the problem, and going into week 3 of working from home here in CA, I am relying on the phone function more than ever. I have a regular iPhone 11, no pro or anything. And like most I’ve seen here the echo is heard by people at the other end, not me. As if the mic is not muting when someone at the other end is speaking, and they are hearing their voice coming out of the speaker bounce back through the mic. Too bad that it seems that the phone function of smartphones these days is secondary to their function as streaming and texting devices or cameras.

I am on conference calls several times a day and have had to resort to using my earbuds. Not my preference, but it works.

I think I may have fixed the issue. So I followed the instructions to update to the latest iOS 13.4 as others have advised and I thought it worked. After my mother started to complain that she still hears the echo while I'm on speaker phone with her...I decided to close out all of the open apps on my phone while talking to her...and...Boom! Echo gone right away. So if Apple is looking at this..this is your fix on the next update. Please send a check to my apple ID..LOL

Good Luck Guys and I'm hoping this works for us all :)

Wow. cdp1030, we can't believe it, but yes - that fix is working, at least so far. Cannot thank you enough, this has been a torment. Fingers crossed the solution will last.

Obviously it's a limitation not to be able to access other apps while using the speakerphone, and will require a fix. But it beats having the person one is on the phone with hear every word they speak from their end echoing back to them at top volume.

I'm pleased if a case change has solved the issue for this user. However, we have anecdotal evidence in 2 situations where the problem has persisted - egregiously - one with an iPhone 11 and an Apple silicone case (the kind where the ther is no crossbar on the bottom near the speakers), and one with no case at all (but it does have a screen protector.

The most successful strategies I've seen to date are to a) quit all other apps on the phone prior to making or taking a call (this has worked to our amazement in several instances) and b) keep the base of the phone away from the palm, parts of the hand, or any flat surface or base or charging station. Annoyingly, holding the phone upside down and speaking into it as if it were a handheld mike seems to work best.

We have not tested this with FaceTime - the upside-down technique would likely yield questionable results.

PS We have -not- seen this problem on any iPhone 11 Pros.

I’ve followed this thread for six months. I’ve been to the Apple store. I’ve done every update. I’ve tried without case. I’m so disappointed in the lack of response. This will weigh heavily in my choice of future devices and platforms. I’m 100% Apple products now. For the first time in more than 10+ years I’m considering migrating all my devices, services etc. to another platform.
