AirPods Pro Ear Tip Fit Test fail (seal is actually good on both sides)

Ear tip test for me got passes on both ears straight away and multiple times with both medium and large tips on first couple days after I got them

However, since then, the left consistently fails the test when I check despite the left bud being just as sealed as the right one with identical sound as the right whether ANC/transparency/off selected. Medium and large tips have same result - left fails the tip test every time. Tried un-pairing from iPhone, resetting the pods the setting up again, but no different.

My thoughts are a glitch in the code for the ear tip test that goes wrong after a few days and a future release will solve.

Contacted Apple Support yesterday who had agreed they have seen reports of this already. They got me to send them a full set of logs from iPhone for analysis then will get back to me once their engineering team takes a look.

Very happy with product generally and no problem with function or sound quality.

But something to keep an eye on...

There is a fast growing forum thread over at MacRumors that is reaching the conclusion that this is a hardware/design issue. Dirt, sweat or some other substance gets thorough the mic grills and affects the fit test. Cleaning the mic grills doesn't seem to help, as the substances may have already passed through them.

Folks have been shipped new AirPods Pro by Apple and the test result is initially a "pass", even with ear tips from an original pair of AirPods Pro. AirPods Pro that are several days old fail the test with the original ear tips or new ear tips. So, the ear tips don't seem to be the issue.

"Fail" results always happens after several days or use of the new AirPods Pro (time for foreign substances to get through the grills and to the mics, etc.).

Unfortunately, this seems to be a product design/hardware issue.

Seems to me that they are very much handle with care; especially if hands wet at all or sweaty.

I’m beginning to wonder if the moment mine went was a day at the gym when someone went to ask me something, I merely took out the left one to listen then when fitting the left back in, a slightly sweaty finger may have accidentally ‘pushed’ some sweat into the grill killing the left external microphone.

I didn’t notice at the time as I think I maybe have had ANC off.

If so, that grill is a massive and terminal weak spot.

Be careful in similar circumstances is my thoughts on it.

I exchanged mine at an Apple Store when I could not get a good seal. The new ones immediately gave a good seal. After about a week, I am seeing the left one fail indicating no seal. Maybe it is accumulating dirt over time?

Also, I can tell as soon as I put them in if I’m going to get a green indicator of a good seal. I always have NFC on. When I put them in, with NFC ON, the NFC is either working well or not. When working well, it always passes. If the NFC doesn’t seem to be working fully, I get a bad seal test. Maybe this is an indicator that the mic is working properly (and not clogged up)?

When I first bought them, went back an forth trying the different tips. The holder for the extra tips is paper. When I removed (I think the large ones), a thin later of paper from the top of holder came off and was stuck on that tip of the AirPods Pro so, of course, there was no sound from that ear and there is a safety issue with small paper discs in your ear!

I remembered. In fact if I press my AirPods in my ear, Ear Tip Test can pass. That's the reason why I didn't return it in first two weeks until it's becoming worse and bugging me so much on the third week from Day 1.

If my case can be reproduced, maybe dirts or particles aren't the cause.

Hope Apple can treat my device returned carefully and overhaul it to debug.

It is packed and will return as soon as I get to go back to BestBuy. Lost hope on these earbuds and will not buy again unless the do not test the seal and offer 6 different types of fit.

Please take me out of this conversation. I spent 30 minutes on the phone and the tech does not even know wht is the issue. He asked me to remove, reset and they do not realize that this is a hardware issue.

I had my first set replaced under the initial 14 day exchange (first set genuinely had a problem with ANC), the left ear was more often than not failing the tip test. However, the replacement set also from time to time will fail the test on the left side again.

Trying the above after it’s failed the test (pinch nose and equalise pressure in ears) then running the tip test again gives passes on the problem left.

So concur its to do with an individuals ear canal pressure. I Scuba dive and when descending or ascending and periodically doing the ear equalisation, have always noticed a slight difference between my ears. Kinda makes sense now.

I have the exact same thing happening. Seal was good for the first few days, then the seal failed. Tested with all sizes, disconnected, forgot the device — still won't give me a thumbs up on the seals. It still sounds great to me and the product is excellent. Apple got it right with the Pros — although you'll never hear them admit that they got the design wrong with the initial AirPods. :)

My first pair worked perfectly for about three weeks. Then, the Seal test started to fail and I could hear that there was a loss of sonic quality both in the midrange spectrum and particularly in base. I can hear it immediately. So I brought the suspect Airpod Pros back to an Apple Store and they exchanged them for a new pair. These worked perfectly, also for about three weeks and then the seal started to fail once again. Now, they just don't sound good and there's no position in my ears in which I can get them to seal.

As a next step, I asked Apple to send me a new pair of tips. I got them today. They don't help at all. Exactly the same as before, seal fails and poor sound independent of position in my ears. It's definitely the Airpods themselves that are failing. Or there's some magical gunk in my ears that's causing them to go wonky.

I'm going to try and get yet one more pair from Apple and if those fail, I'm going to do my darndest to get them returned for the purchase price. Their fantastic when they work. Sadly, they don't work for very long.

This works for me too. Cleaning the inward facing mesh grilles gives me back the deep bass, improves NC and allows the ear tip test to pass. So, there is nothing wrong with the seal, fit or size of the tips but just blockage of those grilles. I guess Apple needs to revise the suggestions when there is an ear tip fit test failure: “Adjust, try a different tip and/or clean the mesh grilles”!

something similar happened to me.

I bought the airpods Pro a week after they came out. I used them for about 3 weeks and both ear fit test started failing. I tried all the different tips but never got a good seal. After a couple of days trying I took them to the apple store. They ran a few test at the genius bar and decided to replace both airpods.

The new airpods worked fine for about 3 weeks again and now the left airpod is failing the test again regardless the size of the tip.

The sound quality is still good and they work fine besides that problem. I am starting to believe it is more a bug than an actual technical issue.

I got apple care so if it gets worse I’ll take them to the store again.

very happy with the product if it wasn’t for this small issue

A smart salesperson in Bellevue said that this test is for nothing! They should not even have this on the app since it will either work or fail each time. The only time your can get good seal if you put a pressure on earbuds. So I do not care anymore. I use Broski Leta ($100.00) light headsets not to listen screaming kids on the plane. I highly recommend it!
