So the app works fine except when I go to watch anything(movie or show) I get sound, but with a black/blank screen.

Never mind. I figured it out.
If someone else comes across this with the same problem the fix is change HDMI input.
I have a Sony Bravia and for some reason it works fine in HDMI Input 1, 3 and 4. HDMI Input 2 gives me just sound with black screen.
No weak chains in the HDMI connection. This is the article that made me think "oh, it's probably the switch"

Yes, switching HDMI inputs worked for my Bravia. In my case it was a reverse HDMI port number solution. Only sound on HDMI 3, but worked OK with picture on HDMI 2. My HDMI 2 is MHL
I fixed it by turning off ‘match dynamic range’.
I had issue of only having Audio English Description on Disney*.... I reset Video setting under Audio and Video in main menu and now it works.
