MBP 16" 2019 CRASHES WHILE SLEEPING

ANYONE else having a problem with their MacBook Pro going to sleep then crashing? EVERY single day for 4 days now this prompt comes up that says "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." I Purchased a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro January 2020. A $5000.00 Computer. I have had NOTHING but issue since. The report begins with panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8004a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1fbc0. After searching I see 582 people have this same problem...REALLY APPLE? Suggestions were made to others who called apple support and they reinstalled their entire systems, reinstalled this, reinstalled that...I don't know about anyone else but I don't have time for all of that nonsense ESPECIALLY after spending $5k on a computer. Finally I found where a person requested the logic board to be replaced and the issue stopped. If Apple can't get their quality assurance in check I will be spending my money elsewhere. I want this computer replaced.

Since the software update to 10.15.7 mine has behaved itself, although the fan is on constantly when using lightroom but think that another issue ( ? graphics card not coping maybe).

So I do believe the crashing is software curable and also agree that where there are issues (eg with thunderbolt connections etc that we should highlight as it may help isolate the issue)

I too am waiting for Big Sur!

I think I fixed this. I was able to narrow this down to being an issue that only happened when I left my computer plugged into my OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock for power and the system was allowed to go to sleep. When I switched to the regular apple power cable, the computer was able to sleep both short periods and long periods and wake up perfectly.

Up until this moment, nothing I did had fixed the problem, but now it works perfectly.

Hope this helps!

My MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB w/Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB) is still crashing after going to sleep then restarting with the start screen "Your computer was restarted because of a problem".

I am running MacOS BigSur version 11.1 (20C69) but still no luck. VERY VERY frustrating!

Has anyone found a solution to this because the provided SOLVED solution of this thread has not solved the issue.

I took mine into the Apple Store last week. They reinstalled the OS and some firmware and asked me to monitor the situation. I thought that was useless as the same software and same hardware would just produce the same results. I asked them to forward it on to the next level and they did. They are still diagnosing the issue 5 days later. Someone previously in the thread said they had to replace his T2 chip. Will let you know what they do to mine.

I would recommend sending your laptop in for service and don’t let them get away with reinstalling the OS. Same software and same hardware === Same problem. There is likely a hardware issue in a batch as this seems to affect only a subset of 16” MacBook Pros.

I spoke to Apple yesterday via chat. The person I spoke with made me run a first aid checkup on all disks. Then they recommended that I re-install the OS (BigSur). I said the OS was a fresh install. She said to then monitor and should it happen again to bring it in to an Apple store. In the meantime, Apple stores ae closed her in Montreal due to Covid. So, to try to remedy this I searched Google. If found this https://www.imore.com/some-16-inch-macbook-pros-are-restarting-when-asleep-after-installing-macos-10154-heres-fix. I will monitor and see if this helps as the computer crashed again this morning after sleeping all night (Sidenote: My 2012 MBP i7 & 2015 MBP i7 can last days w/out having any issues close to this!).

Hope this can help some of you that are having this issue. I'll keep you all posted.

I doubt if disabling Power Nap is able to fix the problem. This week it has happened to me two times when I am 100% sure there was no power cable attached so system was on battery and in battery mode nap is by default (and in my system) turned off.

It is rather something with switching from sleep to deep sleep mode (this is hibernate). It is possible to turn it off, and some fold really did with good effect but this obviously shorten time when system is able to work on single battery load.

I can see that this problem is somehow dependent on MacBook Pro - no-one with other model ever reported the problem.

node_pl you are right. I turned Power Nap off yesterday. Used the Mac as I normally would, which was not very much considering it was New Year's Day. Opened the lid this morning and it was (as it is too often) frozen. It proceeded to lock up with the keyboard then trackpad becoming unresponsive then the fans kicked in with a high whizzing sound, then it shut off and restarted.

Upon restart, I had the famous "Your computer restarted because of a problem...".

I will proceed with Apple now to see what they can do. Most of you should have these under Apple Care still...you ought to bring them in to local Apple stores to let them know there is an issue.

UPDATE: I reinstalled the OS after a discussion with e rep from Apple. Tw days later, low and behold...frozen! It crashed again.

I'll follow up with them to see what is next. it, for me anyway, is now obviously an issue with the computer and not the os. My 2015 MBP & 2012 MBP w/SSD are stable. They wake & sleep as they are supposed to. This one does not. It makes no sense that it is software.

I am now waiting for a return box from Apple to have it shipped back to them for repair.

The support rep I spoke with via chat told me that the logic board needed to be changed. I asked clearly if it is possible that they only re-install the OS, the support representative said no.

So, with that said, I am pretty confident that they will fix the issue. Will keep everyone posted with the story of the Mac I own. I would recommend anyone having this issue simply get in contact with Apple if your machine is still under warranty.

My previous fix I posted in this forum stopped working. :(

Updating to BigSur did not help the issue either.

I too am taking the laptop for repair on Saturday after speaking with Apple yesterday. This is likely a hardware issue. I got the idea that it could be the T2 chip or logic board or both from my call.

I do not have supplemental Apple Care, but the unit is within the 1 year warranty period.

I started having this issue almost immediately after my purchase of MBP 16". After speaking with Apple rep, he said you could have just returned the unit for a replacement within 90 days. That's what I should have done.

He said repairs are going pretty fast so they shouldn't need it for too long.

My advice to anyone with this issue: you should do all the Apple expected handling things BEFORE calling, such as (resetting NVRAM, PRAM and SMC, booting into safe mode and testing it there too, AND also performing a clean install of MAC OS. Unfortunately, they seem to require you to do a clean re-install to ensure nothing is corrupt in MAC OS. They also required me to upgrade to BigSur too to see if that would handle it. If you do all this before you call them, your handling with support will be faster.

I'll post back once I have more info
