I had the same issue with my new iPhone SE 2020. Battery was incredibly disappointing for what I’ve known from my Apple products. I could see the battery percentage ticking down just reading articles (as some others described “a percentage point every 2 min” or so). Like others on here, I did the typical battery saving tips. Biggest clue for me was the first day I took it to work. I don’t have time to look at my phone at work except during my lunch. By the time I got home after 11hrs, I only had 20% battery life. Battery usage indicator told me that Apple Music was responsible for 87% of my battery usage. However, I had only looked at app for abt 3 mins during initial set up of my phone— never actually used it. The rest was background activity (even tho I turned off background app refresh for all apps). As a result of this finding, I uninstalled the Apple Music app. This DRASTICALLY improved my battery life. Next 11hr work day, my phone had only dropped to 78% with light browsing at lunch and a few txts. I used it to browse some social media/watch a few videos at home, but decided to keep off charger overnight. I’m writing up this comment right now with the phone having been off the charger for over 26hrs and I still have 34% battery life. This is much more inline with what I expected given how much i leave it in idle. Wondering if anyone else has the same issue with the Apple Music app possibly going rogue... uninstalling it helped me tremendously.

Bought the phone when it first came out all those months ago. And had all the problems listed here and on other threads. My SE will now hold its charge all day as long as I don’t over tax it. The battery is simply a bit small for the chip probably. There’s nothing wrong with the battery. It’s just a bit underpowered for the phone. The phone is great and works very well. I’m happy with it. Eventually I found the battery issue sorted itself out with the updates and all the other things you can do to help. Stick with it. Don’t overcharge the phone and don’t run the battery down. Keep it between 40-80% while it settles down. You’ve got the same phone as myself, so I’ll assure it’ll sort itself out.

If I could just add. I see some slight improvement when I’ve done a restart - or soft reset, if that’s the right terminology. Bearing in mind I’ve had this phone from launch, so I’m extremely familiar with this whole battery drain issue. The phone is great. I have no thought of replacing it whatsoever. But it would seem a soft restart may help reset some drain issues.

Your comments about the crappy battery life on the SE are pretty on point. I got it the day it was available. And started getting these weird shut downs when the lockdowns worsened, and more of my work moved to my phone, effectively putting good stress on it.

Secondly, I don't know why people are told this overnight charge thing. Even scientifically speaking, you're not supposed to charge it overnight. Ever. Because the battery is under a constant stage of stress when we do that.

I have set a Shortcut to reminds me to put my phone to charge when it dips below 45.

"The battery discharges at about 1 percent every 2mins." Same - with facetime, plus a lot of heat. similar battery drop with Signal app using video too - just no heat.

was with apple yesterday as they ran diagnostics on my phone. have been keeping notes of time and date and % battery drop with every app usage over the last 24 hours. on Signal Video call this morning for 55 minutes. battery fell from 94% to 69% during call. phone got warm a little but not much, have not used facetime since last 'severe' heating up issue. yes, lets hope its device specific - though i'm thinking it may well be an underpowered battery problem. will hopefully be talking with apple again this afternoon regarding new diagnostics. hope you get your phone sorted soon.

I’m at the point now where I think the battery has settled down. It’ll never be perfect but it is better than when I bought it. I’ve never reinstalled Facetime again though. It had previously cooked the phone too hot to handle. I had gone through customer services initially and they were off the bat helpful. Ran tests and diagnostics etc and even though I can’t be certain I think it’s had an impact. It is though for me a twice a day charge if I overuse it - that’s just how it is. But essentially I’ve no serious complaints anymore. I don’t run it under 40% and try not to over charge it to 100% too often. I charge it morning and afternoon. 100% morning. No more than 80% afternoon. Battery optimiser is on. I did have this little spinny thing for a while though next to the WiFi. Now it seems to have gone? Maybe that was monitoring battery too?

I got the iPhone SE 2020 on June 27th to replace my old iPhone SE.

Conclusion so far, is that my approx. 4 year old SE, is still capable of keeping the battery for a longer period than the new (a bit crazy when you think about the chemistry in the battery). This morning and yesterday morning I woke up by myself, as the phone was dead and the alarm therefore couldn't wake me up.

I've called Apple Support to ask if it's correct, that on a brand new phone you need to charge it twice daily and also if it's normal to see battery consumption of ~1% per two minutes spend on YouTube (and I'm 2 meters away from the Access Point)?

The answer after doing systems diagnostics was that all the figures and data they could see, showed the phone was working as intended. I've had an iPhone 4S, the old iPhone SE and now this iPhone SE 2020. Obviously I'm not changing often. With the disappointment over this device, I'm strongly considering if it's really worth the hassle to throw a coin in the "wishing-well" and hope for an IOS update that maybe or maybe not resolves the issue. I'm too dependent on my phone. With Apple Customer Services representative's definition of ,, working as intended'' and given the fact that I don't change my phone often, perhaps I should reconsider changing now (read: less than a week after purchase), while I can still sell this device second-hand and cover the majority of the spending on the phone.

For the record, I've gone through all settings I can think of, covering settings such as...

  • Disabling background app-refresh for everything but my Garmin Connect app
  • E-mail accounts set to manual
  • SIRI has been disabled everywhere there's a slider available
  • Location services disabled for everything but a few apps set to While using
  • App updates has to be installed manually
  • Display strength set to half way
  • Wifi-calling enabled
  • Uninstalled every app which I don't use

I've basically nailed it down to a bare minimum, which I'm fairly certain that my iPhone 4S could have handled well - only had it been usable with new app releases and IOS versions.

I'm not left with the impression that this phone supports mobility for the user that purchases it, as my current hands-on experience tells me that within a short period of time, I'll be chained to a power outlet everywhere I go.

My battery issues have improved. It hasn’t been necessary to factory reset. Over time and the input from Apple the initial problem has dissipated. I’ve also taken to switching off the phone at night. Even with night mode there seemed to be no point leaving the phone on. Shame there isn’t an option for automatic on/off as there was with my last Android. That made so much sense. I’m generally down to charging once a day now. Cheers drew.

If you’re within warranty send it back, if you’re unhappy. I’m sorry to hear of your troubles. Hope you get it sorted soon. I persevered with Apple’s help and I think the battery issue of which you speak and I have experienced is pretty much resolved. I’m not such a heavy user, so I’m not too troubled by it now. If you use the phone correctly regarding the battery and charging, it will more than likely settle down. But if you’re not prepared to hang on and see, contact support to find out if you can get a refund. Cheers drew.
