Final Cut Pro and Spinning Beach Balls

Hello - I just got a new MacBook Pro 13", 2 Ghz i5, 16gb RAM. Trying the Final Cut Pro demo and even on the most basic of projects I'm getting repeated beach balls. Wondering if there is something I have setup wrong? Could it be a hardware problem? Catalina issue?

After some investigating it actually looks like a Mac OS issue not a Final Cut Pro issue linked with the 10th gen CPUs so please can everyone also submit a form for Mac OS and report it as a bug report and explain your issue

Here is a sample that I wrote:

There is an issue with MAC OS and the new 10th gen CPUs when using applications such as after effects and Final Cut Pro. There is clearly a bug that is causing this issue. It looks like it's linked to the GPU on these new 10th gen processors potentially with with the G7 graphics. please fix this problem as I'm sure you're aware that many customers are returning these MacBook pro's with these new 10th gen processors because they cannot use it with these Pro apps. I am using Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5

I just spoke with the support again after sending them my crash reports. The guy says that the graphics card in the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with 10th gen Intel is not on the minimum requirements list for FCP X. I checked out the list, and theoretically only 16" MPBs are suitable for FCP X! So he said that this is the explanation for the crashing... I mean... sure, if there weren't thousands of people out there who use even older 13-inch models and don't get mad beach balls editing a 7-minute 1080p video. This is clearly ridiculous! I'm returning this faulty laptop right now. I don't know what machine I'll be using going forward.

I have just received a new MacBook Pro and it's having the same exact issues, I called them and they basically said I have to wait for the update for Final Cut Pro but there is no guarantee they will be fixing this issue. I would recommend you either return it or wait, that is basically the advice I got from Apple. My advice if you haven't bought this model yet, do not buy it. If there is an update and it's fixed then I will date this conversation

I have the same issue too. Editing a 1080p video on Final Cut Pro and every 20 to 30 minutes, the spinning beach ball appeared. For now, the temporary solution is to quit FCPX and open it again. Apple needs to fix this issue with an update of FCPX or Catalina ASAP. I bought the new MacBook Pro 13inch (2020) just to have a more powerful machine to edit my videos, but it seems like editing on my 2015 MacBook Air is much smoother.

Here's my Mac details:

macOS Catalina

Ver 10.15.5

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB

FINAL CUT PRO X:

Ver 10.4.8

It's a software issue with MacOS, I havnt tried the beta version 2 I believe, but let's hope this is fixed in this version of MacOS, it's a bug with how the graphics is processed as Tom mentioned before, the dedicated and external graphics cards do not have this issue. I'm sure Apple are aware of this issue and they are working on it, just frustrating, and very poor customer service on this issue too

Just got off the phone to Jarno from pro app support who called me back today to follow up with the issue

he is aware of the problem as I also have sent him links to this forum and YouTube videos and to escalate this to the engineering department I need to recreate the issue (make it crash) and then save and send him the log files. He’s sent the instructions for me to do this . I recommend others do the same which should speed things up

I am still in takes with Apple senior engineers so hopefully I will have a solution by early next week from what they tell me, it's been a super long process but I've been on their case about 3 to 4 times a week, all I can recommend it to submit these issues using the links in this thread and also contact Apple support but normally you will need 3 conversations with them just to get anywhere so if you have the time this could help raise the issue higher

Exactly the same issue here with the same model. I called Apple Support and when I suggested that there is a problem with FCP/ 2020 MBPs compatibility, the guy said that he didn't get enough phone calls about it, so it must be my individual issue! Judging by so many people talking about this here and on YouTube - I don't think so!!

I'm not sure what to do, I've got 5 days to return it. I'm worried that it'll take them forever to release a fix. Or even worse, that it's a hardware issue.

That guy is wrong.

I was hoping that 10.15.5 might solve the issue. Now we may have to wait until the next FCP X update, but there is obviously a problem with FCP X and the 13" 2020 models.
