Final Cut Pro and Spinning Beach Balls

Hello - I just got a new MacBook Pro 13", 2 Ghz i5, 16gb RAM. Trying the Final Cut Pro demo and even on the most basic of projects I'm getting repeated beach balls. Wondering if there is something I have setup wrong? Could it be a hardware problem? Catalina issue?

I just spoke with the support again after sending them my crash reports. The guy says that the graphics card in the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro with 10th gen Intel is not on the minimum requirements list for FCP X. I checked out the list, and theoretically only 16" MPBs are suitable for FCP X! So he said that this is the explanation for the crashing... I mean... sure, if there weren't thousands of people out there who use even older 13-inch models and don't get mad beach balls editing a 7-minute 1080p video. This is clearly ridiculous! I'm returning this faulty laptop right now. I don't know what machine I'll be using going forward.

That's ridiculous. I'm doing a return on my Macbook and will wait to see if this gets resolved before repurchasing. :(

I suspect a driver/firmware update is going to come eventually but the whole point of me spending a little more on this machine versus a Macbook Air was Final Cut Pro. If I can't do a 30 second project with transitions and titles without spinning beach balls, I might as well get a $700 cheaper device and just use iMovie.

That guy is wrong.

I was hoping that 10.15.5 might solve the issue. Now we may have to wait until the next FCP X update, but there is obviously a problem with FCP X and the 13" 2020 models.

Either way, I'm not really in the position (like most people right now) to be without a computer so I can't afford to return or exchange anything. iMovie should work for now, but this is still a rather frustrating situation and I don't even have to depend on FCP X! So it looks like you're right Luis, we may just have to wait for an update, wether it be the 13" 2020 models or FCP X.

Because it wouldn't make sense for Apple to create a new MacBook that isn't even compatible with their own product. Fingers crossed something happens sooner than later...

I have just returned the MBP. I still have my old (and sadly, dying) laptop, so I'm going to use it until it takes its last breath. In the meantime, I'll start a second round of laptop search. I'm very, very reluctant to invest in 16" MBP after this terrible experience I've had so far with Apple. And you are right that they'll eventually release a fix. But for that to happen, they need to ACKNOWLEDGE the problem, and they're not there yet. To anyone experiencing these issues: I urge you to call them to speed this up.

Trust me, I have nearly tried everything to see if there is a fix, the only fix is what Apple can do with Catalina and Final Cut Pro. They need to fix it with an update but no word yet on when. I would say return it now because there is no guarantee they will fix it, reports show Apple Support have not been helpful but please report this issue to Apple
