Macbook Pro STOPPED CHARGING after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.5

URGENT help is needed! My Macbook Pro (13', 2019, 2 ports) STOPPED CHARGING after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.5 (19F96). I'm using the default charger and cable, yet the battery keeps depleting! The top left battery icon shows as if the battery was charging, yet when I click on it, it says "Battery is not charging".

I keep disconnecting-reconnecting the charger, and also tried to change the cable, to no avail. The charger worked without any issue before updating to 10.15.5.

I am seriously worried my laptop is going to be bricked if I won't be able to download the fix on it before the battery runs out of juice. Please bring this post to the attention of Apple representatives immediately.

If it refuses to charge with the correct power adapter, the first line of defense is an SMC Reset:

If it still refuses to charge, use the "contact Support" link at the top of every forum page.

I started having this issue a couple days ago, MacBook Pro 16 (3-4 months old) Catalina 10.15.5, not sure what date it updated. working with tech support, we thought it might be the power supply, the replacement came in the mail today, and same problem. What I am able to do is the following. 1 disconnect charging cable from MacBook 2. unplug charger from outlet. 3. remove the kangaroo Jack (the piece that connects to the power supply with the prong for the outer. 4. reconnect kangaroo jack, 5, plug into outlet, 6 plug into computer. This works, but if you unplug anything, I have to repeat the whole process.

SMC Reset momentarily reduces the residual charge to Zero, resetting every chip inside your Mac, especially the System Management Controller (SMC). So, NO, it does not require any residual charge, but it DOES take following the procedure in the article religiously.

NB> the keys with the same labels, but on the other side of the keyboard, are not wired-in, and will not do the job.

It took the repair center 10 days to get my laptop back to me.

They haven't replaced any hardware parts, only reinstalled a clean version of Catalina. I'm not sure how could they do this with a dead battery, and charging not working through the USB C port, I haven't been able to talk with the tech guys themselves.

The repair was free because my Macbook is still under warranty. Again, I was lucky because I noticed that the charging stopped working right after the update, and had enough time before my battery completely ran out of juice i.e. to turn off "Find my" and sign out from my Apple ID, so the repair center could actually perform this factory reset without changing parts. I can't imagine the pain of those people who ran out of warranty, left their Macbook update over night, and woke up to a dead laptop with no possibility of repairing it without replacing parts.

I just received my Macbook pro back from the Apple repair center. They found no hardware problems. Somehow the repair guy managed to do a factory reset (good thing I still had the time to turn off "Find my" and sign out from my Apple ID before the battery died), and with a clean install of Catalina the problem seems to have been solved. I just finished backing up from time machine (a 10.15.14 disk image) and then upgrade again to 10.15.15. The battery and charging works now as intended, fingers crossed it stays this way.

In sum, this indeed was a software f*ckup of Apple with the 10.15.15 update.

The battery requires service. The battery is not functioning normally, though you may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer.

Contact Apple or take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to determine which service and support options are available.

From your description directly above, you MacBook Pro and charging system appear to be operating completely as designed.

The MacBook Pro can use up to the full amount of power provided by the power adapter, and under heavy load, will freely "borrow" power from the battery as well. Your MacBook Pro CAN be run solely on battery, but it WILL run slower in most cases when run only on battery. It is also expected that when you connect an external display (almost all of which require AC power) you will attach the power adapter as well.

Since a charge cycle is ever-so-slightly destructive to battery longevity, your Mac will not initiate a charge cycle until the battery level declines to about 92 percent level. Then it will start a charge cycle to top off the battery back to nearly 100 percent level.

Based on your use patterns, The new Battery Health Management feature in 10.15.5 may relax those limits a bit to provide better battery long-term health at the cost of shorter run time on battery.
