Macbook Pro STOPPED CHARGING after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.5

URGENT help is needed! My Macbook Pro (13', 2019, 2 ports) STOPPED CHARGING after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.5 (19F96). I'm using the default charger and cable, yet the battery keeps depleting! The top left battery icon shows as if the battery was charging, yet when I click on it, it says "Battery is not charging".

I keep disconnecting-reconnecting the charger, and also tried to change the cable, to no avail. The charger worked without any issue before updating to 10.15.5.

I am seriously worried my laptop is going to be bricked if I won't be able to download the fix on it before the battery runs out of juice. Please bring this post to the attention of Apple representatives immediately.

If it refuses to charge with the correct power adapter, the first line of defense is an SMC Reset:

If it still refuses to charge, use the "contact Support" link at the top of every forum page.

Of course it had to do with the update.

Sorry for not being politically correct but I warned about this in this thread and I was still criticized.

My advice to you is, NEVER immediately install any Apple update that says it fixes or improves the battery. Wait at least 1 month. It has been like this for the past 15 years. Apple has always had a difficult relationship with batteries.

My 2019 Macbookpro 13" fortunately did not had any problems with this update because I turned off this crappy battery health function just in time. There are applications that do this much better, like ALdente, just look for it.

The majority of people who will read your post here are other Users like you, not Apple employees. Only a very few Community Specialists at Apple have "read the forums" in their job description, and their responses indicate they are making certain your post does not go un-responded to after a few days -- they are NOT tracking and following the issues you report.

If you want someone at Apple to hear you, use the "Contact Support" link. Apples a company only responds to Returned computers, Repairs where parts are swapped, and Cases/Bug-reports. None of those can be generated merely by posting here.

Despite the timing, Apple tell me it's a battery issue and that no software update will fix it having analysed the logs. I remain somewhat unconvinced given the timing, but that's their final answer. I'm slightly intrigued by the person who says their mac charges in bootcamp. I'd considered booting a linux USB to see what happened, so may try this just out of curiosity before I try and give them £200 (which I can't anyway as nowhere is available to fix it).

I just received a (very courteous) call from an Apple representative, who asked about the details of this case (wow, I'm impressed they actually pay attention to these discussion forums).

We talked through all the details of my case, although when I asked, she wasn't able to provide me any information about how widely this issue is arising.

There is one additional piece of information which might be worthwhile to point out: my problem arose with installing Catalina 10.15.5 (19F96), as can be seen from the screenshot I posted. Now, after reinstalling from Time Machine backup and updating again to Catalina 10.15.5, the operating system minor version number is 19F101. There *might* have been a change between 19F96 and 19F101 that resolved this issue.

I have the exact same problem - 2017 MacBook Pro 13". Updated to 10.15.5, battery stopped charging. It will run as long as it's plugged in, but won't charge past 1%. Kinda defeats the purpose of being portable.

Battery health reports battery health as "Normal".

I've tried the following, nothing has worked:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reset PRAM/VRAM
  • Wiped HDD and re-installed MacOS 10.15.5 from fresh download
  • Turning off battery health management
  • I've tried 3 different power adapters (all 3 worked prior to the update and still work on my wife's 2020 MBP that was *not* updated to 10.15.5)
  • Shutting down and leaving plugged in to see if it charges
  • Restarting in safe mode to see if it charges
  • Restarting in recovery mode to see if it charges

This has to be a problem in the update.

I am having the same issue with my MacBook Pro 2019 (entry version). They asked me to do SMC reset so I did and it works but the issue persists every time I turn my Mac off and on or remove the charger from the Mac and put it back after works. All I have to do is to do SMC but I have to do every time I am back to my Mac for work. I did all that I could, even factory reset. But the issue continues. Doing SMC reset everyday may also cause another issue and plus it bothers me to be doing it so everyday...

Has anyone got to solve the issue?

Thanks

Like I said in my post the other day, I have tried 6 things which I read in other post which allegedly would cure the problem for me, including

1) Turn off the battery health management function.

2) Reset the SMC, NVRAM, PRAM

3) Replaced the old charger and cable with a brand new set

4) Downgrade the OS to Mojave

5) Upgrade the OS to Catalina 10.15.6

6) Turn on the autoupdate and wait for some secret updates which suppose to cure the issue as suggested in some posts.

So far none of them works. I did manage to get charged at times by switching the charging ports, but this annoying issue persists.

Apple took diagnostics from me over the phone and system files via an upload and assure me it's hardware for us. The timing does seem too much of a coincidence and especially now I see that Windows sees the battery as being at 90% (so it wouldn't charge per the new Catalina rules) but I don't have the money for a new battery right now, and nor do I have anywhere that's open to get it repaired if I did.
