iPhone 11 speakerphone cutting out

My girlfriend and I both have iPhone 11’s. While talking to each other if one of us is on speakerphone the other catches every other word. This happens on both phones, if I activate speakerphone she only here’s every other word and vice versa if she activated speaker phone. If you turn speakerphone off there are no issues. Is there a setting that can fix this? Is this a common issue? Thanks

This has to be an Apple fault rather than a carrier fault. I live in Melbourne and so have an Australian service provider. Is anyone else plagued by iPhone 11 Pro Max making interrupting random calls?

I had a similar problem with FaceTime on an iPad. Everytime I spoke the received audio cut out from the other end.

it turned out that unplugging the charging lead solved the problem. There must have been a slight mains hum coming through the lead as the metal case ‘buzzed’ if I ran a finger lightly across the metal. (Using a wall socket USB port, not the standard Apple charger).

I had this issue since I purchase my iphone 11 pro max. I got it replaced through verizon, still same issue. I spent hours on troubleshooting with help desk, reset the settings, restored from backup, tried all possible tech solutions I could think of. No luck.

One thing common was my iphone case. One day I forgot to put my case on after cleaning, I found no one was complaining about voice break after I put the phone on speaker. I see the issue came back when putting my case on. Looks like the hardware sensor on new iphone is conflicting with some of the cases(at least in my case)

May be... try out removing your case and see if that resolves for you as well.

Thanks - yes, I tried that, but it didn’t make a difference. It did make me understand that the problem was likely due to the noise cancelling, hence looking for other sources of possible noise, like mains hum.

it has only been noticeable since the last iOS update, so hopefully Apple will be able to undo whatever improvement they had made.

Same problem on the iPhone 11. The question is why sound breaks up when using speaker, e.g., on Facetime. Muting my microphone stops the other person from breaking up. Removing the case seems to improve the sound (less breaking up) but does not prevent it. Speaker phone normally cuts out your speaker when the microphone detects sound above a threshold sound level. That's what it sounds like is happening. The mike is picking up sound from the speakers, i.e., the other person speaking, so your phone thinks you are speaking and it cuts out the speakers.

The case may conduct sound from the speakers to the mike and make the problem worse. Remove case, so less of a problem.

It might be a setting. In another article with the same issue RKNYC found that restoring from scratch made the problem go away. Whatever happened on the restore may have changed the threshold cutout setting. We may try that next.

If you do the reset, please post back and let us know if that resolved it, I’ll try that with our phones also if you have success.

Funny how no one from apple is replying on this thread, yet other posts get replied to right away. Seems like a problem they are aware of and don’t want to take responsibility for.

When I first posted here, it has about 400 something me too’s with the original post, now it’s getting close to 800.

if this doesn’t get resolved, both my wife and I will be switching over to a new platform when it’s time to upgrade..

I can confirmed this issue is occuring on four new iPhone 11, one new iPhone 12 mini, and two new iPhone 2020 SE.

Cut-out behavior is consistent when loud speaker is enabled during a call, the microphone on the same device cuts in and out, causing the conversation to break up on the receiving side. When switched back to ear speaker, the conversation is clear on the receiving side.

Another consistent behavior is when the case on these phones is removed, the problem "seems" to go away, but that hasn't been tested for an extended period of time.

There are 3 microphones on these iPhones, (1) hole next to ear speaker, (2) hole in left bottom speaker grill, (3) hole near front camera. I wonder if a different microphone is used for recording with loud speaker on versus with ear speaker during a call.

Having a case does not block any of these microphones. Something with the iOS software is causing these cut-out issues, and evidently this problem is wide spread across many iPhone models.

Apple engineers: please replicate this issue in your lab ASAP and provide a patch fix. Problem has been around for at least over a year.

I literally can’t have a conversation with anyone while using my iPhone.  For over a year I’ve had to deal with this in addition to 2 chronic lung conditions, amid covid19 Etc

This has made existing even more unbearable for me. I don’t have another device. Nor do I have the extra money to waste on another glitchy device. It’d be nice ifI had something I COULD ever rely on. This of the only way I have of communicating with ANo pop YONE, kids, boss, family, doctors, ANYONE. I paid over $1,000 for this device to add dress up or h to stress me out. I got ripped off. Wouldn’t be the first time. Feel free to reprimand me for ranting, frankly I don’t even care. You also ripped me off on three different Apple TV’s, you scored another unhappy customer.. Toggling the noise cancellation only helped a few times, back when.

After buying the he phone in February, I am now on my 3rd iPhone 12 Pro Max handset with a fourth “express replacement” on the way. What I find the most frustrating is Apple pretending this is not a thing. Close to 1000 comments on here, 1700 on one for the 12 Pro, plus another 12 pro thread regarding the same problem with another 300 comments. If you Google it, you can even find tech blog articles about it. Yet, when you call AppleCare, they don’t have a clue. Obviously Apple engineering and management knows, meaning they’ve made a deliberate choice to pretend this isn’t a thing. I don’t think they realize the damage to their brand that something like that can do, but being the biggest company in the world, I guess they just don’t care. It certainly has taken me from being a loyal Apple fan to vowing to never to buy another one of their products in the space of three months. I guess my only recourse now is to just to force them to honour their warranty and continue to replace the phone every three weeks or so throughout the two years I have it. Ironically, they wouldn’t “express replace” the latest handset without first talking to a senior Apple advisor. Funniest part of the call was when she said “sorry, I didn’t hear the last part, you were cutting out...” , I replied “yeah, I hear my clients say that ALL THE TIME!” 😡
