Just updated to iOS 14 and iTunes on imac no longer sees my iphone

My iTunes 12.8.2.3 cannot recognize my iPhone after recent update. My iMac is Mid 2011 with OS 10.13.6 High Sierra. It can no longer be updated, and there are no updates for my iTunes. I have restarted my iMac while iPhone was connected and it still won't see it on iTunes. I then shut off my iPhone while connected to desktop and turned it back on. It still won't see my iPhone. What should I do? Is this a bug from the recent update to the iPhone?

After several hours and conversations with Apple Support, I was able to fix it. I ended up having to do a factory reset of my iPhone. I then had to copy a backup file and use a friend's MacBook because my iMac was too old. He had Catalina for OS so it recognized my device. However, after restoring my iPhone my iMac still wasn't able to see it. Eventually, my last call with the probably the 8th consultant over the phone fixed that issue. His suggestion probably could have solved all the time spent fixing it. He had me go to Apple iTunes webpage, https://www.apple.com/itunes/?cid=OAS-US-DOMAINS-itunes.com. I had to download a driver (12.8.2).

Unfortunately, this no longer works. The dmg you get from the "previous versions, 12.8.2". is identical to the one you get for 12.8.2.3 and just reinstalls 12.8.2.3.

Sorry to reply to my own post but I don't see any way to edit it once it is made. Well, I figured out my problem at least.  I recently updated to IOS 14.2 and the next time I tried to sync my iPhone with my Mac Book Pro (15", Early 2011) running High Sierra 10.13.6 and iTunes 12.8.2.3, I got the message "A software update is required to connect to [the iPhone]". Clicking the "more info" box wasn't helpful since it takes you to a page saying you need the latest Mac OS and IOS.  Naturally, I assumed the "upgrade" would install Catalina or later which I didn't want.

I went through all the steps in this thread and kept ending up back at the same place, ie with iTunes 12.8.2.3 and the "software update required" message.  (Note that you get the exact same file from downloading either 12.8.2 or 12.8.2.3).

I finally bit the bullet and clicked "Install".  I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it only installed an iTunes patch (although without changing the 12.8.2.3 designation).  Voila! My iPhone connected.

My conclusion is that if I had just accepted the initial install upgrade request I would have avoided all this headache.  I'm afraid Apple has made me paranoid by trying to force everyone to the latest Mac OS with warnings that can't be turned off, etc.

Hi paulmont - I am having the exact same problem as yours, with the same (latest) version of iTunes and a Mac the same age as yours on MacOS 10.13.6. Apple Support's advice to me just now was: 'In order for iOS 14 to work, you can't be running such an old version of macOS (we're on 10.15, almost to 11.0), and your Mac isn't capable of being updated further.' That means the only way for me to transfer files from my iPhone to my Mac is via iCloud, which uses up lots of internet data whenever I download anything from there. I wish I hadn't updated to iOS14. Did you end up finding any solution?

thanks for this, 2 hrs on the phone w/ apple support and they didn't have the answer, they always just try to say to update to the later OS etc.

i'm on early 2013 macbook pro 15", high sierra 10.13.6, itunes 12.8.2.3.

iphone se 1st gen, ios 14.0.1

i downloaded the 12.8.2, it still didn't see my phone,

but the it said to update to latest version of itunes, and when it finished that it was 12.8.2.3 again and now it's working.

i did that all while screen sharing w/ apple support and they didn't think it would work, they are kind of useless.

thanks.

Thanks for posting the solution to this problem. I would never have found the solution without your help.

The URL https://www.apple.com/itunes/?cid=OAS-US-DOMAINS-itunes.com points to a new webpage. Scroll down to:

and click on "Find previous versions of iTunes". On the new webpages, download iTunes 12.8.2 for Mac:

Install iTunes 12.8.2.3. After installing, reboot your iMac and connect your iPhone to your iMac. A new window will appear:

After downloading, macOS updates iTunes in the background. If you double click too early on the iTunes icon, this window will appear:

After completing the update, iTunes sees the iPhone again.

Thanks, but sorry I was confused by the solution offered above. I already have the latest version of iTunes 12.8.2.3 installed. Does that mean I need to re-install 12.8, and then the latest update, all over again before it would see my iPhone? Wouldn’t want to waste my time and data unless someone tells me this is exactly what is required. Thank you!
