Honestly- Apple should be beyond embarrassed by this release. How do you release your big software update and let this slip through? Messages is literally the single most used app by I would say 99% of people, and it seems like almost everybody(no matter which phone they have, I have the 11 pro max) has this horrible lag when typing messages? Considering people were reporting this in beta, how could this POSSIBLY be released without fixing, and then go this long without an update? I just don’t see how it’s acceptable and really shameful moment for Apple. Amateur hour for the most valuable company in the world- get it together guys if you want to stay on top.

I am having this same issue, but on my iPad anywhere I type more than a sentence. And it is not a slight lag. I hav to wait minutes in many cases for my typing to show up. Word, e-mails, even within a Remote Desktop. It must be something with iOS14. I’m going back to school while working and trying to use my iPad to write papers for school and remote in for work. It was working great until the iOS 14 update. The only work-around I’ve found is to ensure the application is closed down and no longer running in the background and restart. I have to do this every two sentences! Apple please fix!!! Is there a way to go back to the last iOS 13 release because the typing lag is to the point where I can no longer use my iPad.

Well ****. I was hoping to find a fix in this thread but I guess I’ll keep an eye on it in case anyone finds one. Someone at Apple really screwed the pooch on this one, letting it get through beta and all. They need to fix this ASAP. I rely on my phone to communicate with my husband when either of us is working, and to be reached whenever an issue occurs at work of my boss needs to contact me and this **** lag is making it difficult.

We shouldn’t be looking for fixes on the lagging issue or removing apps, Apple send out the update and it screwed everything up, no Apple needs to fix it with another update, I don’t understand what’s the delay with Apple since thousands of people are complaining about the same thing and they’re not doing anything about, these iPhones are expensive, there shouldn’t be any issues with the operating system, that’s why Apple loses a lot of people to Android, Apple wake the **** up!

I’m wondering if this lag has to do with iMessage and pictures in the thread. I was fine most of the day until a thread heavy with pics recently started texting me back and forth, and I was getting crazy typing lag in iMessage. I was in WhatsApp and every time a pop up notification of a text came through, WhatsApp would lag when typing....and WhatsApp never really lags ever. iMessage seems to be the only app with the actual keyboard lag but other apps will show it IF iMessage shows up with a notification. So I’m really wondering if it’s iMessage and pics threads.

Ok it def has to do with iMessage and pics I think. I just sent a pic and as I went to type after it sent I got massive lag. Went into another app and as I got the iMessage banner pop up, it lagged in that app. It hasn’t lagged since last night when I had another picture heavy threads going. very odd. This thread only had two pics in it but it happened right after I sent it. COME ON APPLE this can’t be that hard to debug. If this isn’t fixed by 14.2 I’m done, back to android, cancel iCloud sub. Not worth the aggravation when the last time I had a laggy android keyboard was 2012.

So, back in the day when the Web was tiny and I was working in HTML a lot, I remember when some jackass invented the search text predictor popup but failed to make the cache it used sufficiently highly available or low latency. So, remember when a text field was just a text field and every key you typed incurred no execution? So it was fast and easy, you entered data and pressed return. Then, some browser code and/or sometimes even worse javascript code would run on every keypress to try and auto-fill what you were typing. a "Did you mean APPLE?" t. "Did you mean ATwater?" etc. and that required a cache hit, usually off box, slow, and the result was a very delayed keyboard response. Google still does this but having 10 years to work on the problem have a nice local and fast cache as well as async response loop so it doesnt hold up keypresses while it's looking up things. Anyway, I wonder if this is something like that? Some idiot manager at apple trying to be clever by putting a latent feature in a tight loop with a part of the UX that must always remain low latency. ? Anybody know how to check (monitor network off phone when you bring up the keyboard? Or disable all auto-spell auto-correct things? Or run the same IOS version in XCode on your laptop?).
