iPhone Fitness app and Apple Watch Activity app not syncing

Ever since I updated my iphone to ios 14 activity app isn't working properly.

Indoor walk gets recorded in the watch but does not show up in the activity app, outdoor walk workouts are missing, route track map does not appear any more. I tried restarting phone and watch and even unpaired and paired the watch again but no luck.

Does anyone else has similar issues?

Looks like there are lots of bugs in activity app in ios14

I too had this same issue.

I've been working with Apple Support and engineering to fix this, well my problem at least.

I'm happy to say that all is fixed for me, my maps, awards, move streaks are all there and showing.

To start, make sure your data is really there. Look in your health app on the phone.

go to Workouts then scroll all the way down to Show all workout Routes

Tap that and see if the data is really there.

If it is here are the steps that Apple gave me to follow and it worked.

This involves wiping the watch and the phone.

You must use the iCloud back up

  1. Make sure that under iCloud, you have toggle on Health Settings>your name>iCloud>Health>make sure this is toggle on
  2. UnPair your watch from the phone (Watch>All Watches>Your watch tap the !> then tap unpair Apple Watch
  3. Perform an iCloud backup Settings>your name>iCloud>Backup>Tap back up now
  4. In the health app, tap your picture bubble on the top right, scroll down to the very bottom and make sure that the data has been back up. It this does not show the correct date, do nothing else as it will fail and your data will not be correct.
  5. iPhone>Settings>General>Rest>Erase all contents and settings
  6. Restore iPhone from iCloud backup
  7. Repair your watch to the iPhone
  8. Restore Watch from iCloud back up

This is what I was told to do and it worked.

Proceed at your own risk.

Update, for your information: after unsuccessfully following the official support instructions* I spoke with senior Apple support staff today and the problem was acknowledged; they are working on an update.

As restoring an iPhone + watch is quite a cumbersome task (taking several hours and requiring to re-initiate/re-couple fingerprints, Apple pay bank cards, complex 2-factor logins to banking Apps, etc) I am not going to try this procedure again and will wait for the update. Meanwhile, I will go back to the good old days of running with an iPhone strapped to my arm - so vintage :)

*=unpairing the watch, backing up the iPhone, wiping the iPhone to factory settings, restoring the back-up, re-pairing the watch

Found a bit of an intermediate workaround. Not ideal but it will get your data pulled from your watch to your iPhone health app. After mine didn’t sync, I went into the health app and did a manual workout entry using the data from my watch. Only asks for basics like activity type, time, distance and calories. However I noticed that when the manual entry appeared in my fitness app, all my heart rate data had pulled through.

As I say, not an ideal solution but worked for me as a temp solution whilst they get this fixed.

New bug and possible reason for it :

The main bug which is really, bugging me, excuse the pun, is the fact the health app on iPhone shows different data for certain parameters than the now fitness app (previously activity)

The data which is missing is active energy, walking + running distance & exercise mins.

Now, I have just noticed something when checking if data for each day matches the data for each day in both the apps. You can check the raw data on the health app by clicking on a parameter (walking distance or active energy whatever you want to choose), then going down to ''show all data'', here it will give you the data for each day. Before I done a full reset to factory settings a lot of this data was missing, but has now since returned. However, I still noticed some differences. But I have now also noticed tonight that, it is on the day in which I have done a WORKOUT, that the data is not same. For example on a day where I didn't do a workout, the distance walked for a day is, for example, say 3 miles, it shows up as 3 miles on both the fitness app and on the health app all recorded data. However on a day I done a workout, the distance shown on the ''all recorded data'' via the health app would be far less than the data recorded on the fitness app. For example, on sun 3rd nov 2019, my distance walked and ran was 5.7 miles in total shown on the fitness app, however, on the health app where the raw data is stored, it is only showing 1.6 miles...my workout that I done on that day was 4.09miles, what a coincidence that 1.6 + 4.1 = 5.7!?

So you can see here where the bug is lying, the raw data isn't being pulled properly from the workouts.

Hope some people can relate or have ease of mind from knowing where this problem now lies!

Apple, hurry, up, and, fix, this!

I have the same issue, where most of the workouts from the apple watch doesn't sync to my phone. Some of them sync but they lack the map route and the heart rate recordings lack a large chunk of data.

I would love for Apple to fix this soon, because there is really no point having an apple watch if it's going to be like this for me.

I have, however, found that using Endomondo on the watch records the workout with the route and heart rate just fine. The workout doesn't always sync to the fitness app, but it shows up in the Endomondo app. So it's a workaround for now.

I'm fighting w. this issue too. First I tried the unpair + pair Watch. This solved the syncing issue, but route track maps are missing.

I then tried Apple's guide to fix it (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211865) but i'm not able to backup using iCloud - says 'This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available'. I'm only using 312MB of the 5GB and have disabled most Apps. When I inspect the iCloud storage usage, the Health App accounts for 153MB. If I go to settings->General->iPhone Storage->Health the data size is 1,25GB.

The end result is that I can't use the Apple's proposed fix.

I went and tried backing up my iPhone to my PC using iTunes and followed the steps in the guide (complete reset of iPhone and Watch, restore from backup (iTunes) etc.). Doing it this way does not solve the issue, route tracks are still missing.

I'm concluding that the root cause of this mess is that iOS calculates size of health data incorrectly. This matches the symptoms:

  • Workout syncing problems (Watch -> iPhone)
  • iCloud backup problems (not enough iCloud storage)

Come on Apple, you must be able to figure out a fix for this!!

Looks like this issue has been going on for a while, but I thought I would add my experience. I updated my watch IOS on Monday night (1st Feb) and since then my workouts are not rolling fully onto my activity rings.

The Workout App is working fine, I did a 32 minute workout (I know because it was a YouTube video) and my watch and phone both mirror that information correctly.

However, my activity exercise ring is only credited with 26 minutes... which is bizarre.

Apple support suggested I unpair and repair - which I did to no availa. The offered me to try recalibrating (which will lose my past year of activity/awards etc), I don't want to do this as I am certain this is nothing to do with me - the watch and phone are mirroring each other perfectly in every other way. (My stand and move rings are fine). So apparently I just have to wait for a software update and do more exercise to get my ring closed!!
