“Time to leave” alert in calendar not working

I’ve searched on the internet ways to solve this and I’m coming up short. When I set a calendar alert Time To Leave is crossed out and says “Time to leave alerts are not available because location-based services are not available”. My location based services are turned on. I feel like I’ve checked everything up and down including rebooting the phone but nothing works. Please help!

Hi there. I was having the same problem and researched it. Luckily I found the solution.

Got to settings>privacy> Location services> scroll all the way down to System Services and go to Location -Based Alert and turn on. That will fix it for you

I have a feeling you have found the solution. When I opened Calendar on iCloud, all of my calendars were deselected except for one called "untitled" which I don't recall creating. I couldn't find a way to delete "untitled" so I deselected it and selected all the calendars I do use. I have now created a test event for today and will post when I know the results.

Sorry to report that the iCloud solution does not fix the problem. If I create the event for a hour or so from now, I get a time to leave alert. If I create the event for further in the future, such as the next morning, I get no alert. This is consistent over my Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, so it is certainly not an iOS issue by itself. It seems to be tied up in the changes Apple made to Location Services across their platforms. It seems Calendar can't determine your location if it has not been accessed recently.

I found one possible clue in the preferences for Calendar on the Mac. Under Alerts is a check box to use Time to Leave (it should be checked). Under that box it says, "You will not receive alerts for events with destinations that take more than three hours to reach." So if Calendar can't access your current location it may assume you are farther than three hours away from your destination and forego the alert.

Totally in agreement Mitch Stone.

We are already in iOS 14.6 and the bug is still uncorrected.

I am also beginning to believe that there have been changes in Apple localization services. I would venture to say that the introduction of the Covid 19 exposure reports may have affected this in some way (he agreed with the arrival of iOS 14).

I think that everyone we write in this forum should send feedback to Apple every time they update and the bug continues.

I believe I have found the solution to this issue.

Time to Leave alerts now require two settings, Travel Time and Alert. In iOS, tap Travel Time. From this screen you will have the option of setting your Starting Location. This can be either your current location or a fixed location you specify. Right below this setting are three travel options, for driving, walking, or public transit. You must choose one of them. Returning to the main menu, select Alert. From this screen you may select Time to Leave or how much time before you need to leave when you want to be notified (5 minutes or more). The settings are similar in Calendar for macOS.

I'm not sure when this changed (iOS 14 and Big Sur, probably) but I don't remember having to make all of these selections before to get my Time to Leave alerts. Now you do, and now that I know that, it's working again for me.

What good news that worked after a week of testing!

Then always when creating an event you have enabled the option travel time? Do you have it according to the current location or in a specific location?

Another question, how do you have the location services settings on all your Apple devices to make it work for you? In my case I have my iPhone and my iMac.

How travel time is set seems to depend on the device. On my iMac and MBA calendars it's always "from home" but on my mobile devices I can choose my starting point as "current location" or a specific place. I assume iCloud shares this information amongst our devices. I am not certain how my iMac and MBA know my home location. My iMac obviously stays on my desk and I have not checked to see what happens when I take my MBA elsewhere.

It's my problem, I can't solve it.

For a moment I thought it was for a mistake in time zones, and it is curious that I found divergences of time zone in the web version of the calendar iCloud (area of Cupertino), the calendar of my iMac (zone of Paris), and that of my iPhone (zone of Madrid, which is my real zone).

Well, after adjusting all three to the Madrid time zone, it still does not work.
