iPhone 12 Pro charging slowly with Magsafe charger

I bought the MagSafe charger with the 20w brick this week and have been used to charging the iPhone XS, it’s noticeably slower as usual since it’s not compatible.

But my iphone 12 pro arrived today and added my MagSafe clear case and have been using the MagSafe charger with the 20w. It was a 61% battery right at 4:00pm, when I checked at 4:30, it was sitting a 64%. I thought it was supposed to 15w superfast charge, am I missing something? Is it a Hardware defect, is it the MagSafe case? If i use my 20w usbc to usb lightning it would have been at 90% within that time frame, maybe my expectations were high, but even then the phone feels super hot to touch.

Everything’s apple branded.

So to recap Iphone 12 pro, with apple MagSafe clear case, with the MagSafe clear charger for the 12 pro and the newly released 20w power adapter. I used all of these and have noticed it’s still slow, ****, my Apple Watch series 6 reached a 100% before the phone did.

I’m glad that I’m not alone. Got my iPhone 12 pro and the MagSafe charger 2 days ago, and used the MacBook 65W charger to charge my 12 pro without the case. After 20mins, the battery only went from 19% to 20% in 20 mins of charging. I switched to lightning charging and it worked fine.

Anyway, I’m meeting a Genius tomorrow and will bring my phone and MagSafe for inspection.

To check if the problem is the MagSafe charger or the phone, try charging with a cable.

One point to note, wireless charging does have some energy loss that a direct cable connection does not, so a 15 watt wireless charger probably only provider 10-12 watts to the battery. A cable connection does provide all of it’s energy to the phone’s battery, so in a way it is “greener” as it has less energy waste.

Just left the Apple Store at Marina Bay. The Genius did a thorough check to my 12 pro and tried another MagSafe charger. It charged normally. So the outcome is the MagSafe charger I have is a defective unit. I've applied for a refund.

I would suggest anyone who has this issue to visit Apple Store, or just get a refund or exchange with the MagSafe charger.

I bought the MagSafe charger with the 20w brick today for my new iPhone 12 Pro. When I put the iPhone on it, I had 63% battery life. 15 minutes later I had 60% and I only used it to check the weather, etc a couple of time. Now it has dropped to 58% after another 15 minutes on the MagSafe charger.

I even shut the iPhone down and restarted but it is not charging at all and is in fact draining the battery.

What gives?

Following up with the original comment, I had my Genius Bar Appointment today, came back home recently, they swapped out everything, 20w brick, magsafe charger and my magsafe case(If you have a clear magsafe case, look at the bottom, it’s already cracked by this time around the openings).

Swapping everything out fixed my issue, I probably just had a bad batch, but the Genius Bar tech noticed my brick wasn’t outputting that much watts from it using the usb c cable to lighting cable and since they don’t have a magsafe charger testing unit they just swapped everything.

So As of right now no official word from Apple but just swapping out the components fixed my issue!

The MagSafe is 15 watts, so it will charge twice as fast as a 7.5 watt Qi charger to 80%. From 80% to 100% there is no fast charge capability; the phone slows the charge rate above 80% (actually, it starts slowing at 75%) to prevent overcharging.

However, there appears to be a bad batch of MagSafe chargers (or possibly 20 watt USB-C power sources) in the pipeline. Contact Apple Support to arrange to get it replaced—>Get Support

Device: iPhone 12 Pro, 256 GB, Pacific Blue

iOS 4.1

Alright so... I received my iPhone 12 Pro and after initial setup realized I was having the same issue. During setup while apps were being downloaded I even noticed that while MagSafe charger (Using new 20W Brick) was attached to device, it said it was charging but noticed it wasn’t actually charging. The percentage was going down... I also noticed after trying a number of things that after I hard reset the device, the percentage shoots up as if it actually was charging all along... but then goes back to being buggy again. During this time I also noticed that while the MagSafe was attached, the iPhone 12 Pro was getting VERY HOT. 🥵 I’ve tried everything multiple times, from backing up and resetting and erasing device, to hard resetting multiple times, to setting up as new device...

After fiddling with the device and reading multiple forums on the issue, I came across another interesting bug... which leads me to believe it’s actually a software issue and not a hardware issue. If you go to the ‘Measure’ App, the Lidar scanner is supposed to automatically be used to indicate how tall someone is... but it wasn’t working. It either kept saying move closer or move further away. So I found a solution to that problem on another forum... and it seems that this solution also solved the wireless charging issue as well. It’s simple actually.

The ONLY solution that I found was the following (No need to setup as new phone):

Go to: Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. (No need to erase your phone.)

This seems to have solved the issue. I would also try charging and discharging the battery once or twice with a lightning cable first. This seems to have resolved the wireless charging problem we’re all experiencing. Hopefully this helps. I still made an appointment with Apple so I’ll update to see what they say.

Good luck everyone.

I just updated my iphone 12 Pro to ios 14.2, and tried the Magsafe charger again from the 75% level. It initially charged quite fast say 17% more in 30 min, then it started to charge slower and took almost an hour to add 25 % new charge to reach 100% level. This time the phone was not as warm as when it was in ios 14.1. There is little improvement, but charging still slow.

I Finally came to that conclusion yesterday when I found the apple article regarding fast charging their iphones. This finally hit the nail in the coffin on the magsafe accessory because at the end of the day it’s still slower than charging it with a 20w brick and usb c to lighting cable despite the battery optimization feature.

No matter how much I tried to combine the two, magsafe charger was always pulling behind and finally when I read Apple’s claim that the Magsafe charger only outputs 15w from 0-50% battery in 30 minutes and slow charges your phone after that I finally realized that I’ll just stick to wired charging. I expect the charger to output 15w no matter what but I did not know it was that restrictive and that doesn’t sit well with me, **** my AirPods Pro case was super hot after just leaving it charge for like 10 minutes.

Thanks for your help and helping me decide to finally just return the charger. Magsafe 1.0 is just not for me.

It doesn’t matter what kind of charger you use. The charge rate always slows down after the phone reaches 75%. But a 20 watt USB-C charger will always be faster than a 15 watt wireless charger. Both because it can supply 1/3 more power, and because wireless charging is less efficient than wired.

The charge rate is completely under the control of the phone; the power source plays no part in any charge rate decisions, other than the fact that the phone can’t use more energy than the power source supplies.

If you follow the best practice of charging overnight, every night, the charge rate won’t matter, because the phone will always be fully charged in the morning. And unless you are a very heavy user it will last for the day.
