iPhone 12 Pro charging slowly with Magsafe charger

I bought the MagSafe charger with the 20w brick this week and have been used to charging the iPhone XS, it’s noticeably slower as usual since it’s not compatible.

But my iphone 12 pro arrived today and added my MagSafe clear case and have been using the MagSafe charger with the 20w. It was a 61% battery right at 4:00pm, when I checked at 4:30, it was sitting a 64%. I thought it was supposed to 15w superfast charge, am I missing something? Is it a Hardware defect, is it the MagSafe case? If i use my 20w usbc to usb lightning it would have been at 90% within that time frame, maybe my expectations were high, but even then the phone feels super hot to touch.

Everything’s apple branded.

So to recap Iphone 12 pro, with apple MagSafe clear case, with the MagSafe clear charger for the 12 pro and the newly released 20w power adapter. I used all of these and have noticed it’s still slow, ****, my Apple Watch series 6 reached a 100% before the phone did.

I’m glad that I’m not alone. Got my iPhone 12 pro and the MagSafe charger 2 days ago, and used the MacBook 65W charger to charge my 12 pro without the case. After 20mins, the battery only went from 19% to 20% in 20 mins of charging. I switched to lightning charging and it worked fine.

Anyway, I’m meeting a Genius tomorrow and will bring my phone and MagSafe for inspection.

My iPhone 12 Pro is charging incredibly slowly on the magsafe charger - like staying at the same percentage for 20 + minutes and just getting insanely hot. I almost burned my hand on the back of the magsafe charger. I thought this was supposed to be faster than traditional wireless charging but so far it is much slower and far hotter. Not a fan of this or the phone. I like the design so much but if this is a flaw then I dont know that I want to keep it

As iphone 12 pro has been out for few weeks already, and a lot of people must have the same issue of the Magsafe slow charging. I hope Apple Inc. should look into the root cause, and publicily announce any solutions. I saw the news about the design of the magsafe by a Japanese designer, and I believe the issue is more on the sofeware. Apple Inc. has done an extensive R&D on the new iphones to add magnetic functions to work with the magsafe, so, there must be an easy fix I hope.

Very interesting, because I tested out MagSafe passing through the 12 Pro Max MagSafe clear case on my 11 Pro Max today (sat my 11 Pro Max inside the 12 Pro Max case since it fits loosely inside) and it went up 4% (62% to 66%) in 7 minutes (Then I ran the same test over lightning (still with the 20W brick) and it went up 7% (66% to 73%) in 7 minutes).

So that’s better speed charging my 11 Pro Max than your 12 Pro, and the 11 Pro Max has a much larger battery to charge.

I purchased the IPhone 12 mini and a mophie 3 in 1 wireless charging stand. After charging the phone all night it only reached 84% of the battery capacity. I contacted Apple support and I was told that I need To wait 24 hours to get the battery charge at 100% as the phone it, learning all the apps and it’s battery lifetime. If the issues continues after 24 hours to call back.

I totally agree. I have the new 12 Pro & have the Magsafe charger. With the X & 11 Pro I use the Mophie wireless charger when at the office. Of course I'm using it as well with the new phone & case & it's absolutely awful for charging now. I can't believe how slow it is. I'm going to do it without the case & see if it's the case that's the problem. Please someone give me their feedback. Avid Apple guy here. Thanks.

It’s not your case, the case acts as a pass through, I was going nuts troubleshooting to see if it’s the case, that’s the thing with new tech you don’t know if it’s the 20w adapter, the magsafe charger or simply the phone itself.

I troubleshooted everything in all sorts of combination, it all boils down to the magsafe charger itself. The 20w brick does it job, the magsafe is sporadic it will fast charge one time or it wouldn’t at random times, given that notion after living with it for two weeks giving it all the chances I could, it was still slow charging despite the “24 hour” period...

As I look at my message again I meant I have the Magsafe clear case & it’s not charging on my Qi charger & they both run hot. I took the case off & the charging is much faster & doesn’t run hot. Granted I know plugging it in is the best case scenario but at my office I use the wireless charger because it sits on my desk. So it’s the Magsafe case that’s the problem IMO. Wondering will Apple do anything regarding this. I bought the Apple case from my Verizon account though.

Please help.

I'm not using the Magsafe charger. I have the Magsafe case & when I use it with the Qi Wireless charger like I've done with other clear cases the charging was fine & it didn't get hot. Well it charges slowly with the Magsafe clear case, the phone & charger gets extremely hot. When I take off the there again the Magesafe clear case & put the phone itself on the Qi Wireless it charges ok & doesn't run hot. My only estimation is the Magesafe case guys.

Yes! I thought I was the only one! Got a brand new iphone 12 pro max with magsafe and charger, pieace of junk!! It takes more than twice the speed of wired charging and it heats up the phone to almost buring to the touch, I'm surprised at how apple can market things like its waterproof resistance (which they already got fined for in europe after it was proven to be false advertising) and its fast wireless charging and have it be sooo different in real life, its nothing short of false advertising, what a scam.

I bought the exact same products and my IPhone12 Pro was overheating when charging overnight and was charging very slowly. At one stage it drained the battery. I took the MagSafe back and it tested faulty. The replacement is not overheating but does get warm and is still very slow charging. The Alarm Clock app I use overnight seems to make the issue worse.

The phone seems to only fast charge when on the Lock Screen. But I can’t be sure since there is no indicator if it’s regular or fast charging other than the circle and lighting indicator that only appears while the phone is on the Lock Screen. So is it still fast charging whole on the Home Screen or in an app like Spotify or maps?

I don’t think it is because the battery was draining instead of charging while I was using GPS, Spotify and Doordash.

I also have the same problem with iPhone 12 Pro + Magsafe + Original Apple 20W power supply and at the beginning it worked perfectly and was not too slow in loading, so at some point it really slowed down to the point of taking all day more than 12h trying to charge. Or sometimes it doesn't even load. And as already found out many people are having this problem! I paid dearly for a product that is said to be premium and that's not what I found!
