iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

Well, after contacting both Vodafone (my upgrade provider) and Apple, the response for both was no replacement.. Apple support encouraged me to write up a proper negative feedback, which i did and neither of them offered any care advice.

After a bit of research I bought a screen protector by Mous Uk, what they call hybrid glass, and Im very happy wt it. It comes wt an applicator and instructions and I cannot notice the scratches underneath it now, also the touch response is the same as not using any protector. I just wish I knew beforehand about this screen flaw in the new models as I would have waited and installed this even before i turned on the phone for the first time. I never had that with previous models, my last Iphone XS was used wt no screen protector for two years and nothing like this happened.

Apple should definitely review and improve this glass screen, this is not good enough for a device this expensive. #unimpressed

I understand. I have only had one iPhone I didn't put a protector on and that was iPhone 6, something people have said they never ever got a scratch on. My iPhone 6 got scratches a-plenty. I vowed immediately after to NEVER have an iPhone without a screen protector put on before it ever got turned on. I'm sorry this happened to you, but if it's the worst thing that happens to you in this crappy year, count your blessings!

Stay safe and healthy and if you celebrate Thanksgiving, enjoy a safe one.

Bottom line is..

if you’re a clumsy person that throws your phone everywhere, drops it or mishandle it, you’ll benefit from this more shatterproof new glass

if you always handled your phone wt care, never dropped it or had probs with falls/ cracks or needed to use a screen protector, then you’ll notice this glass to be considerably inferior quality as far as scratchproof goes

Clearly Apple is marketing all their accessories, so people spend more.. u need a screen protector, a cover, a charger, Wireless charger, etc, etc.. they found a way to upsell everything, so I personally have to start questioning my phone device choice for the future..

By the way, "stronger" in the context of these articles means more shatter-resistant, not necessarily more impervious to scratches:

I congratulate you on your luck with your 11, recipient of the exact same complaints:

As mentioned, in each case, Apple has said the same thing:

Scratches are user-caused cosmetic damage and are not covered under warranty.

Because people generally want to know the facts and the truth, and the truth is if your phone is scratched because you didn't apply a screen protector, Apple considers that cosmetic damage and will not replace/repair the device under warranty.

If it causes one person who otherwise would not have to protect their device by installing a screen protector, that's a good thing.

I don’t remember asking for your opinion, you can see I’m not the only iphone user “complaining” about the poor quality of the screen. Like I said in the previous comment, which was absurdly moderated, not using a screen protection is not an excuse for a lower scratch resistance than the previous models. (I am not interested in a 20ft drop resistance, as I don’t throw my phone).

You may not be interested in 20 foot drop resistance, but a lot of people are interested in have a screen which is far harder to break in a fall. The issue is no one has figured out how to make glass which is harder to break AND harder to scratch at the same time. Before iPhone 11 and now 12, there were thread after thread of people who were upset they were going to have shell out $100's of dollars replace their broken screen. Those threads are virtually non-existent today. The tradeoff is either live with scratches or invest a few dollars in something which will protect against them. Your choice completely, but if you think anyone on this forum can do anything for you, you're mistaken. And Apple will NOT replace your screen for scratches.

You may not like any of our comments. But when you came here to complain, we are offering the advice that the only solution you have is to put a screen protector on your phone. If you don't like the truth, well, sorry about that.

Based on some of the comments here (i.e. - getting better 4x drop performance is the big win but scratches are to be expected), I would have appreciated having seen some documentation explaining that the new iPhone 12Pro Ceramic display is harder to shatter, but the tradeoff is that it is more likely to scratch. That kind of information, during the buying process would have been great to know.

However, from the website, that is not what is explained. The info is for both better drop-performance AND scratch resistance:

"Nanoscale ceramic crystals

Enter Ceramic Shield. It’s made by introducing nano‑ceramic crystals — which are actually harder than most metals — into glass. Sounds simple, but it’s incredibly difficult because most ceramics aren’t transparent. By controlling the type of crystals and degree of crystallinity, we developed an exclusive formula that maximizes the toughness of the ceramic while remaining optically clear. This was the breakthrough that made Ceramic Shield ideally suited for the display. It’s a first in any smartphone, and it’s tougher than any smartphone glass.

Dual ion-exchange process

Tough is great, but we also wanted to make it scratch-resistant. So, using our dual ion-exchange process we use on the back glass, we protect against nicks, scratches, and everyday wear and tear.

4x better drop performance3

Beyond Ceramic Shield, there’s one more thing that contributes to the durability of the front cover. It sits flush to the edge of the phone, which helps protect it even more. Altogether, we’ve quadrupled the drop performance — the largest year-over-year improvement ever for iPhone."

I've now put on a screen protector, but I'm disappointed that the "nicks, scratches, and everyday wear and tear" that the new ceramic shield is supposed to endure was not enough to protect my phone from a scratch. My case and screen protector were on order, but they arrived after my pre-order iPhone 12 pro arrived (many vendors didn't have them available right away and I didn't want to buy two times). My error was thinking that for that brief time, with great care (putting iPhone in microfiber pouch when not in use), shouldn't prove to be impossible to keep the phone in pristine condition.

I empathize with you. I really do. All I can tell you is no matter what's written, no one, not Apple, not Samsung, not Google, has found a glass which can't scratch. I do appreciate the new phone's glass is harder to break. My partner has a tendency to drop his phone. Cases can help a lot, but the impact with phones of just a few years ago, and one could be spending a lot of money to replace the screen. Another advantage to screen protectors is they often take the impact of a fall and they break, but the phone won't. This happened with his iPhone 11. The screen protector shattered. The iPhone screen was perfect. We just used the lifetime warranty on the Belkin protector and had it replaced for free.

I don't even read the fancy words about the glass. I already had a couple cases before the phone arrived and before I even powered it on, I had Apple install the Belkin Screen Protector with the magic Belkin Screen Install Machine. Then I turned the phone and went about setting it up.

Edit: There's a guy on YouTube called Jerry Rigs Everything who every year tests the scratchability of every new iPhone. iPhone 11 scratches on the Mohs Scale at level 6. Keys, coins, etc, won't scratch the screen. iPhone 12 is actually harder at closer to Mohs 7. But the biggest culprit is micro granules of sand which is predominantly quartz. People put their phones in their stone washed jeans and there are bound to be residual micro grains of quartz in their pockets. I'm not saying you've put your phone in stone washed jeans, but sand is everywhere and since sand is higher than Mohs 7, it scratches phones unfortunately.

Every year a new iPhone comes out and every year there are threads that look exactly the same. I completely understand being frustrated that your new phone has scratches. I don’t understand why so many feel like glass won’t scratch so they don’t want to invest a few bucks in even the cheapest old school screen protectors (I’m talking like the cheap 6 pack of Supershieldz protectors that are $5.99 on Amazon and maybe $0.50 more on their own site). Maybe I’ve been super lucky but I’ve had my phone since release day, didn’t get my cheap screen protectors in the mail until today, had my phone in a case that did not cover the screen the whole time (I usually use a folio case but haven’t so far this time)...yet no scratches even with me leaving the house daily with my phone. Yes, I’ve been super careful but the way some of you explain your situations it seems like I’ve been careless compared to how careful you all say you have been and haven’t left home. Not to diminish anyone’s feelings...but honestly...unless this is your first phone ever I’d think by now no matter how much stronger the new phone is advertised as being it would seem clear that stronger doesn’t mean it won’t scratch...scratch resistant doesn’t mean scratch proof (any more than water resistant means water proof but that’s another complaint that happens every year). And after seeing complaints every year about this...even if you’ve been lucky each time to come out unscathed it’s a little unrealistic to believe your luck would be limitless if you choose to leave your phone surfaces bare. I don’t know if there will ever be an after the fact fix for scratches on screens but we do know a form of prevention or at least making it less likely to happen would be using a protector. Then again....maybe I’m just super anal about keeping my phone pristine because I want top dollar when I resell so I try to get a cheap protector for my screen ASAP 🤷🏽‍♀️
