iPhone 12 Pro: Facetime / speakerphone microphone audio cuts in and out

My wife recently upgraded from the iPhone X to 12 Pro. For Facetime calls, she frequently positions the phone propped up on her desk (bottom part on desk) so it's hands-free. This seems to cause the audio to cut in and out for the people on the other end of the call. My guess is the noise cancellation to prevent feedback from the speakers is causing it. However, it's not an issue on any of the older model iPhone we've had. We've tried it with both case on and off and tried turning off noise cancellation in the settings, but didn't work.

Is anyone having the same issue? I'm wondering if this might be a software fix in the future or if it's hardware related.

Yes! We are having the same issue. And also did not have this issue with iPhone X or iPhone 7. We now both have iPhone 12 and while speaking to my wife she places the phone on counter on speaker while she washes dishes, cooks etc. Sound begins to cut in and out eliminating her voice at times, along with everything else at times. This must be some software glitch.

Same issue here.

I tried all troubleshooting issues, nothing worked.

Went into the Apple store twice, they said replacing the phone won't help as they figure all phones will be the same, he said even his phone and his two daughter's Iphone 12's are doing the same thing. So even the Apple store rep knows this.

After much insisting on my part they finally said they would be willing to switch the inside of the phone and keep the back and fronts? No idea what they really did as today, I am back at square one... facetime cuts out constantly. The only thing that helps is face time on landscape mode but forget it working in portrait. Haven't used it for phone calls yet today so I can't comment. I am sure if facetime is still acting up then the calls won't be any better. Using this phone for work has become impossible. This is my first apple phone and I am extremely disappointed.

I’ve had the same issue with my phone since I got it when the new iPhone 12 first came out and I called support numerous times as well as brought it into the Apple store for repair with no change . Until this last time about 3weeks ago and they said they were going to change the speaker and mic on my phone . When I went to pick it up they said they had a problem and broke my phone and replaced with a new one and so far I’ve had no issues with the new phone so I believe the older 12’s had faulty parts in it

Yes, I have many problems with my iPhone 12 Pro microphone. On speakerphone I can’t be heard. On FaceTime I literally have to yell for my wife to even hear a murmur. I have done all of the things being suggested online, but to no avail.

I’ve bought every model iPhone since the first in 2007 but never had a mic issue until the iPhone 12.

Apple, please create and release a patch to fix this. And if software manipulation doesn’t work, recall the phone and correct the hardware. I’ve always loved iPhones, but at this point, Samsung’s starting to look pretty good.

Out of all my apple devices, iPhone SE(2nd gen) is fine whereas iPhone12, iPhone 11 has this critical problem.

It is unusable in the speaker mode. I always need to wear headphones to get it not to cut out on Facetime, Whatsapp, etc.,

Most likely a software bug with noise cancellation. It tries to cancel the mic to cut out the echo but it instead cuts out the actual voice. The closer the mic is to the surface the problem amplifies! None of this seems to happen with iPhone SE (2nd Gen) or with iPhone 6s etc., irrespective of mic positioning. Please fix this!

I have the same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro and went to apple store only the lady told me that it’s blocking the speaker. I even told her that I don’t have issues on my iphone XR and why at first they can hear me then all of a sudden they can’t which she can’t answer. It’s frustrating to upgrade thinking this is better than my old one.

Yes this is a issue that everyone I’ve spoken to is experiencing. Apple SERIOUSLY VERY DISSATISFIED!! Plus we are very disappointed at you and you really need to fix this!!!!! Honestly I’ve had nothing but trouble with the new 12 pro, first thing that started to happen is my password played up and it ended up being a software glitch. I had to fully restore phone and install everything manually 1 by 1 not using a backup. At six months old or less it’s now at 82% battery life which is absolutely disgusting, considering I’ve had phones that 3 to 4 years old still at 88%. I have more issues but there’s no point listing them here…

Now, I have tested it myself!! We have iPhone XS Max calling iPhone XS. Never an issue. Bought a 12 pro to replace the iPhone XS then we had The XS max constantly not being able to hear me due to phone muting most of sound. Seems to me like a very poor noise cancellation feature. For the other end on the 12 pro I had no issues with the XS max. Perfect sound. We took the XS max out and replaced it with a 12 mini and now we are experiencing same issues on both devices. We will all need to contact Apple and complain to get them to resolve this problem.

These new phones are actually feeling worse than the XS and XS max series which we thoroughly enjoyed. Even the XS max had a bit better quality of picture resolution.

will be complaining to Apple.

So glad I found this thread. Just bought my wife the 13 Pro as an upgrade from her 6S and recently noticed this exact issue where her sound would be cutting in and out at times. It's pretty crazy because the conversation quality was much better before this phone. Quite disappointed but really hoping that Apple will have a fix.

This is a problem with all modern phones on speakerphone. Aggressive anti-echo audio cancellation.

When I'm outside on the street calling my friend I need to mute myself in order to be able to hear her, otherwise every tiny sound on my side will make her phone mute herself. Only if the sound on my side is constant this doesn't happen.

So why not use those AI chips to recognize voice and always let voice through, Apple?

Also, Apple phones do weird things with audio if someone on an iPhone makes a long "eeerrrmmmm" sound. It'll suddenly pump up the volume. Super weird and this is an iPhone-only issue. Hope for quick software fixes.

Using earbuds helps the other side understand you so your phone at least won't mute itself by sounds on the other line.

My wife and I have iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Our phones work just fine.

Our son-in-law upgraded to iPhone 12pro Max.... and that's when we first noticed the issue in this thread.

While talking to them on Facetime on his phone.... their audio would cut in and out.

Our daughter also had an iPhone 8 Plus..... never had the issue on her phone when we talk to them on her phone.

Now.... about two weeks ago.... she upgraded to the iPhone 13Pro Max...... when ever we Facetime with them on her

new phone.... the cutting in and out happens.... just like our S-I-L's 12Pro Max.

So..... this problem all began with the iPhone 12's.... and now has continued into the iPhone 13's.

So Apple needs to go back and look at the components inside the 12's and 13's..... and compare them to all the

iPhones below them..... because they didn't have the problem with them.

After making my initial post here, I went to the Apple store near by location to talk to the guy there hoping to get a bit more insight to the issue that I am facing with the 13 Pro. The rep put the phone through a few automated test to ensure that the issue isn't with the hardware. Everything came back clean and I proceeded to replicate the issue for him. He witnessed it first hand that the audio was cutting in and out when I put the bottom mic/speaker against a surface. However, I got very dissatisfied when the rep just acknowledged that I have an issue on a brand new device but would not work with me to get to the bottom of it.

With that said, I continued to point him to the fact that on iOS 15, the "Noise Cancellation" option under Accessibility is missing even though you still can search for it and that is not the case for previous iOS. I was speculating that it could be related to this feature as it only happened through calling apps (e.g. FaceTime, Messenger) but not through thing like VoiceMemo where I would block the mic/bottom speaker to record my voice and the playback audio would simply sound muffled (which is expected). I also asked to see if they'd have another "demo" unit where they can try to replicate the FaceTime calling issue with me again to ensure that I don't have a lemon by chance. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the help I needed and ultimately left the store with the same issue that I walked in.

Needless to say, I think everyone here is at the mercy of Apple until they roll out a software fix or acknowledge some sort of design flaw.
