Maybe someone has thoughts. I have a slightly different scenario than what I can find on the chats or thru google.

I have a Canon MX922 - I can print fine from multiple devices (desktop, laptop, phones). I can scan via Canon MX920 Series print app on my main user (admin account) on my desktop (2015 iMac), wired and wireless. I cannot get the scan function to open for other users on the desktop. I get 2 error messages when attempting to open the scanner - "You do not have permission to open the application “Canon IJScanner5”." and "Filed to open a connection to the device (-21345)". On my 2020 MacBook Air I cannot even see the scan icon to click inside the application - regardless of who the user is.

I have gone to the Canon site, downloaded and installed all the latest versions of the application.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

"I did talk to Canon support and because of the new M1 chip they have to write a new driver. It will be release in a few days so hold on. I did get an advanced release and it works with my Mac mini M1 chip."

What was the specific error message you got with the bunk drivers?

Any chance you can help a fellow printerless fella get the advance copy to get rolling again?

Just to add, I followed the instructions posted and when I connect my printer nothing pops up. The computer doesn't even recognize that the printer is connected. Checking Canon's website, it states that the drivers are built into my OS (Big Sur) so they don't offer drivers on their website. This is now an Apple issue. When installed previously, it was a plug and play option.

I sincerely hope this will make someone happier today. If you are in situation when Canon installer refuses to install because of Big Sur version here's what I did:

mount .dmg drive with downloaded .pkg installer as you would usually do

open Terminal

and run following

SYSTEM_VERSION_COMPAT=1 open /Volumes/mac-UFRIILT-CARPS2LBP-v157-00/UFRII_LT_CARPS2_Installer.pkg

of course replace path with your correct name of mounted volume and installer filename.

Theoretical explanation:

Versioning in Big Sur is doubled - in some cases for certain SDK Big Sur presents itself as 10.16 in other as 11.x

SYSTEM_VERSION_COMPAT=1 environmental variable stting forces it to communicate 10.16 version to installer and Installer swallows that. Hurray!

I got my drivers installed and they work nicely.

Surely this is not guaranteed to work for all printers and driver's packages. But if your driver is said to support Big Sur it should. Do it for your own risk and with considerations.

My problem is solved, I can print now. I checked at Canon site whether there may be a more recent driver for my LBP3010 - and there it was! Paradoxically dated 4. Dec which was the date when I downloaded its previous version (10.0.2) that could not be installed on Big Sur. It seems I just missed the actual version (10.0.3) then. Thanks all for the effort!

Very helpful, thanks for the insights. I was able to force the install using your instructions and was able to get the drivers installed. Unfortunately, the printer is still not working, despite the fact that printer status is being displaying and most diagnostic functions appear to be working. Upon sending a print job to the machine, it goes to "in use" and stays there. Queue states that the printer is not responding.

Normal printing on existing Win10 machine works fine. Looks like something related to Big Sur/M1 is still very much broken.

Appreciate your help!

I noticed that for some Canon printers with current drivers (Nov/Dec 2020) and showing support for Big Sur 11.0.1, that the drivers install properly on Intel Macs running Big Sur, and refuse to install on Apple Silicon M1 Macs running the same version of Big Sur. The dialog complains about the architecture as unsupported. May be a more widespread issue…

I reset everything and reinstalled. I dont think my printer the TS8250 is supported anymore with Big Sur. If you change the operating system to Big Sur on canon driver download - a message comes up with not supported. So any ideas on how to get to work ?? I downloaded for an older driver version of Mac software which was successful but it prints blank pages.
