Logitech MX Master 3

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased the new M1 MacBook Pro. My Logitech MX Master 3 mouse is stuttering quite a bit on both bluetooth and USB connectivity options. It doesn't do this at all with my Windows 10 desktop or 12" Macbook running Big Sur. If anyone else knows how to fix it please help.

Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

Hi everyone,

I am having the same awful experience with this mouse. It not only stutters, it also makes any other device connected via bluetooth virtually unusable (e.g. AirPods disconnecting every few minutes and getting stuck while trying to reconnect).

Also, I made the stupid move of purchasing the "Mac" version without realizing that it's identical in features to the PC version, but it does not have a USB dongle in it, so I'm stuck with bluetooth unless I purchase a dongle separately -.-

After trying many possible solutions I read in this thread and around the magic world of the Internet, I thought I could directly attribute responsibility to something related to the mouse, not the Mac's bluetooth.

Also, my wife uses a Logitech triathlon mouse and it had the exact same problems of my MX master 3, pointer stuttering badly and affected other bluetooth connections, so it's not about the specific mouse.

I think the problem may well be the Logitech Options software.

After reading the post by shahin787 I tried uninstalling it completely but instead of reinstalling it, I tried just using the Mac mini built in drivers and I have not reinstalled it: pointer is smooth now and no BT disconnections. I am also keeping USB 3 devices (a hard drive and a webcam) always connected and I have had zero issues so far, so I don't think this is about interference.

It's a shame because this means I cannot change the mouse settings as I'd like to, but at least I can use it without going crazy every time it gets stuck and affects every other device connecting to the Mac via BT :)

I have followed the instructions as noted, even though the first step of pushing the mode button and "seeing if I can adjust the scroll" isn't helpful... but I did push the button once before removing and re-installing everything.

I had the same version of Logitech Options installed before going through this. For whatever reason, this has actually largely helped my issues. I can't really explain why. I also had Logitech Presentation installed for my R500 presentation remote control, and as of this writing I have not installed it again yet. I am using the mouse with no dongle, straight bluetooth to the M1 Macbook Pro and it seems to be working much more smoothly. For what it's worth, I have Smartshift disabled, and I used the #2 profile on the mouse to pair up with my macbook. Setting #1 is set for the USB receiver.

I will let you know if I have any issues after installing the app for the remote again. My mouse firmware is currently version 19.01.0015 on MacOS Big Sur 11.1.

Ok, I've managed to get all features working on my MX Master 3, on the Mac Mini M1. Firstly, two accessibility options require installing on security & privacy preferences (logi options and logi options daemon). On both occasions, it may look as though it's asking you to repeat the same task, however, it's not. This will allow it to recognise it's an MX Master 3, or else it will pick it up as a MX Anywhere 3 (basic) mouse, hence the loss of gesture control.

If it doesn't do it the first time, uninstall the app and re-install.

I've added screenshots below to show you the result.

Note: Connection via Bluetooth still does not feel completely smooth, but is improved.

Speaking of BT, audio is also spotty via AirPods Pro, Bose speaker, or our nearby Sony BT soundbar. Both Apple Music and Spotify “blip” with a .5 sec stop in streaming at least twice/minute. Logitech app is still Intel, as we know. However, I’m wondering if the issue is associated with a BT issue affecting the M1 Macs.

Today, I’ll start using my Apple Trackpad and BT keyboard. If BT is a problem it will be evident using these devices as well.

I too have noticed frozen cursors during opening and closing finder/app windows.

That said, still very happy with the M1 MBP performance! I’ve had no issues with speed using both Native and Universal apps, sometimes 10+ apps at a time. If Apple addresses this BT issue, the experience would be 5 star across the board.

I watched a review video today on the M1 Mac mini, and the content producer found a solution by not using the USB-A ports, if possible. The bluetooth issue seems to go away if only USB-C ports are used and perhaps a USB hub. It sounds like a hardware issue, honestly. My MBP 13" M1 still reboots randomly and MX Master 3 mouse functionality is about 75%, when the external monitor is connected.

I'll keep sending crash reports to Apple.

Okay everyone, below is what I have sent to Logitech describing my issues. I'll post back here once/if I receive a reply from Logitech support.

Also came across this article, I'm not sure if Big Sur update 11.1 included specifically the fixes referred to here. It does seem to be an M1 thing.

Dear Logitech,

I am writing to you concerning the use of your MX Master 3 mouse with my 13” 2020 M1 Macbook Pro.

I have had continued issues with scrolling using this mouse. It’s hard to describe exactly, but the scrolling stutters and will even intermittently change direction from scrolling up to down sometimes at the end of the scroll motion using my finger. If I test the scrolling by switching between scrolling up and down very quickly, the scroll will stutter, stop, and occasionally “freak out” and the page will go all over the place, skipping to random spots before finally settling into a random location on the page. I also have been able to produce consistent results in that the ability to scroll down quickly is disproportionately faster than attempting to scroll up. Many times, even if I spin the wheel very quickly upwards, the page will either not move at all, or will move maybe half the distance to the top of a page and then stop. Scrolling down however will successfully find the bottom of the page every single time I spin the wheel.

Thus far, the problem is not app specific. This happens whether I am in any Microsoft app, chrome, safari, email, even scrolling in MacOS Big Sur itself through various menus.

It doesn’t make a lot of difference to switch between using the ratcheted feature or smooth scrolling.

Further, when I am connected using Bluetooth directly to my machine, the performance is completely unusable, to the point that I actually returned the Mac version of the mouse and swapped it for the Advanced version just so I could try using the USB Bluetooth receiver in my USB-C dongle. At first I thought I got a faulty unit, but after trying the Advanced version and doing some reading, I can see it doesn’t seem that I got a broken mouse the first time around. It does seem like there is some improvement using the USB receiver in the dongle, but it is far from having fixed the issues.

I have verified that I am running the latest update of MacOS Big Sur (currently 11.1, in which Apple claims to have fixed some previous Bluetooth connectivity issues) and also the latest update for the mouse itself using the latest version of Logitech Options to date.

According to a check on your website, it looks like Logitech Options is noted as being fully compatible with Big Sur at this point. I found this information here:

https://support.logi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053649633

I have tried both versions of the mouse, and both connection types with the Advanced at this point. In Logitech Options I have tried enabling and disabling all setting and adjusting various sensitivities to see if I can produce any improvement, but so far, nothing has worked.

The following link I believe you will find useful as I have discovered that I am not the only person experiencing these issues. In addition to this, I have found reviews from various sellers online where users with M1 machines have ended up returning this mouse altogether. Many of those users cite that they decided to return to their old mice.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252063756

Before I return this mouse, I wanted to reach out directly and see whether or not there is any work being done on this issue, to see of you know about this issue, and if there is a timeline on a fix.

I believe this mouse to be a premium product and one that I would very much like to use in my workflow with my new M1 Macbook Pro. If you could advise further on what I might do from here, I’d greatly appreciate it. Please feel free to contact me regarding this issue if you would like to get further information from me. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Respectfully,

Jeremy

Same, Lethal. My 2020 x86-based 13" MBP had no issues with connectivity or function using Logi software. Following my Time Machine setup on this 2020 arm-based 13" MBP, it stutters while scrolling, gesture buttons do not function, and scroll wheel button is non-functioning.

I suspect the code is being translated by Rosetta 2 and the issue may resolve when Logitec ports the Logi Options app to M1 SOC. I love this laptop otherwise! It's a beast for my grad school work which comprises mostly of Word and G-suite apps. I do make an occasional movie for coursework, so having the power to edit while working on research will give me extra time where typically the MBP would sit idle till it finished encoding.

I have had issue with Logitec being slow in the past for supporting buggy software and drivers. Hoping they get a sense of urgency with Apples latest development of in-house chipsets.

Not sure this helped at all? I guess it's cathartic to commiserate together. lol
