Mail is slow since updating to iOS 15

What is causing email to download so slowly that it has virtually stopped since updating to iOS 15?

Replying to myself, with additional info. You might need to also reset your network settings after disabling the Protect Mail Activity and Hide My IP.

Settings/General/Transfer or reset iPhone/reset/reset network settings.

if you look at the Protect Mail activity description it says it’s using a multiple proxies. Then add Hide My IP and now you seemingly have put a bunch of hops and relays in between yourself and your email and then hid your IP so if it could get to you after all that, you are still hiding from it.

The features sound good and cool and it would be great if they worked (and maybe there is some Apple Techno Magic they do to make it all work some how), but I think if you want speed, you can’t turn on all the blocks/hides/reroutes just yet and expect it to work like it did before.

I had this problem too. It has to do with the increased security that iOS 15 has.

Here's what I did that worked:

Settings> Mail>Privacy Protection. Then turn off the IP Address protection. The ONLY slider that's green on my phone is the one that says Protect Mail Activity. At that point all the other options are gone.

When I did that, my email opens up just as fast as it ever did.

I FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME. IT WAS RESTORING MY IPAD FROM MY COMPUTER. After trying every fix in this conversation (turning off mail privacy settings, etc) , I got in contact with apple support on twitter and set up a phone call with apple support. We worked on it over discussions during two days. The solution that finally solved it was backing up my iPad to iCloud, signing out of the iPad in settings, then connecting my iPad to my laptop and restoring the iPad from the Finder - which reinstalls the operating system. Then setting up the iPad again and signing back in. This completely solved the mail problems for me. It was a bit time consuming so you need to do it when you have a couple hours (maybe 1.5 hrs). The computer you use to connect with your iPad needs to be updated to the most current OS. Good luck!

I had this happen to me as well. None of the self-help articles worked. I even executed a reset/restore on my iPhone. I ended up removing all my email accounts from Settings>Mail>Accounts. Then I deleted the Mail app from my device. Re-downloaded it from the App Store and added my email accounts back to the device. Problem solved. I assess there must have been iOS compatibility issue with existing Mail app on my iPhone and by removing and downloading a new Mail app must have remedied the issue. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the update.

Clear Space:

If there is little storage left, then that would slow things down. So, see if you need to clear some internal space. Try clearing internal storage though use of the following:

What Space to Clear:

A. Clear Temporary Internet Files:

Clear your Temporary Internet Files(Cookies & Cache) of Safari:

Also...

B. Clean TV and Music Libraries:

Remove all unneeded files from your TV and Music Libraries. Full-Movies take up 2-4GB typically, and a bunch of those would take up a load of storage, ideally. So, if you have any movies that are not needed, then delete them.

Also..

C. Clear "Other":

Clear the storages named "Other". It basically contains unnecessary files such as caches that are used for system ease of use - all of which gather over time: How to Clear "Other" in your iPhone's Storage - Use Backup - User Tips. Caches would be being used for remembrance of application use. So, clearing other may be the way to go about this, as it would be performs through use of a computer.

I had the same issue. Mail loaded daily quickly but loading each message was terribly slow and almost not happening, especially mails with attachments.

Went to mail settings and disabled privacy settings for protect mail activity and turned off block all remote content while keeping hide IP address on.

Now it works but loading is still a bit slower than before the upgrade.

Looking forward to Apple for an update on this.

Agree with you.

tried everything like switch on switch off disable security reset restart, nothing worked. However if I used outlook mail, it worked fluent.

also, by chance when the app 1.1.1.1 (free vpn) is on, mail worked very fast and smooth. I know we should not use another app to fix something, but that is what I am doing to solve the issue until mr. APPPLE get us some fix.

We too had this problem one one of two iPhone 13s, one bad, one good. All the normal options, iCloud sign-out, phone resets, OS updates were no help. I then found I could delete the Mail app and re-install. That seems to have made the fix. It was confusing on reload as the iCloud account was apparently still signed in, and just needed to be authorized in settings for iCloud mail use and all is now well, back to normal instant operation.

The fix for me was disabling Protect Mail Activity. Settings/Mail/Privacy Protection/ and turn off Protect Mail Activity and Hide IP address. Now checking Mail in the app works as fast as it did in ios14.

When I updated to Ios15 one of the options I remember getting prompted for was more privacy around Mail so I said yes. It works so well apparently you can’t check or send gmail accounts in a reasonable time frame with the iOS mail app.

I tried most of the other things in this thread before hand and nothing worked. Try turning off that new feature for now and see if things start working better.

I have the same problem and it started right after upgrading to iOS15. In my case, even when I refresh email it does not fetch new email. Eventually(hours later) it downloads more, but it is always behind. I was able to mitigate this by reducing the amount of email kept on the ios mail app from the default of one month to 1 week. I have more than 100GB free on the phone, so it is not a space issue, but that certainly helped. At least for now.... and it took a while to catch up after the change.
