Replying to myself, with additional info. You might need to also reset your network settings after disabling the Protect Mail Activity and Hide My IP.

Settings/General/Transfer or reset iPhone/reset/reset network settings.

if you look at the Protect Mail activity description it says it’s using a multiple proxies. Then add Hide My IP and now you seemingly have put a bunch of hops and relays in between yourself and your email and then hid your IP so if it could get to you after all that, you are still hiding from it.

The features sound good and cool and it would be great if they worked (and maybe there is some Apple Techno Magic they do to make it all work some how), but I think if you want speed, you can’t turn on all the blocks/hides/reroutes just yet and expect it to work like it did before.

I am not sure why Apple has not provided helpful information; however, I followed someone’s suggestion after having the same problem since install of IOS15 and following everyone’s resolve by backing up my iPad to the cloud following these steps.

  1. go to ‘settings’
  2. go to ‘general’
  3. click on ‘Transfer or Reset iPad’
  4. click on ‘Reset’
  5. Restore from iCloud backup
  6. or by following https://www.itproportal.com/features/how-to-restore-a-backup-from-icloud/ This is an extremely useful post.

Good Luck, and I hope this is helpful.

I was annoyed with the same dilemma for months. This worked for me, as another user suggested.

  1. Delete all mail accounts (hopefully you know your password or can find them in the password listing under settings.
  2. Back up your iPad to the cloud.
  3. Reset the iPad to original, as though you were going to start with a new iPad. (When you open settings, there is a search at the top directly under the Settings title; type in Reset, and click on the first link that appears). Power down, and restart.
  4. Restore your backup from iCloud.
  5. Reinstate your email accounts. All of your mail will come back.
  6. ‘Best of Luck.

I have also found that none of these fixes works for me.

It is obvious that this is a bug in 15.1 because of the workaround I have found. When I open an email and nothing happens (just the circle revolving) I close the Mail app and reopen it. Then the email is there immediately.

This only works for that email. So to read 20 emails I have to repeat the process 20 times, with each email - which is ridiculous! But at least it works (for me anyway) and I hope it might help others.

But it makes me sceptical that this is anything more than a bug on 15.1, rather than issues with network settings etc, since the data has obviously been downloaded as it is available immediately on reopening the app.

It would be nice to have a less patronising reply from Apple. After nearly 20 years (when I first moved from Microsoft) I am seriously considering moving back to MS because of the repeated problems with OS upgrades that don't work properly.

My latest problem with slow and unresponsive mail has gone on both my iPad (iOS 15.5) and new iPhone SE (iOS 15.5)

The fix for me was as simple as restarting iCloud on my iPad and turning it on and off a few times. And on my iPhone to turn it on and off a few times. If this doesn’t work for you I suggest setting up a call with Apple support so they can try and fix your problem.

Symptoms I experienced on my devices over a period of about 5 days: messages not being sent, partially loaded/displayed email page, slow response from the mail app.
