Replying to myself, with additional info. You might need to also reset your network settings after disabling the Protect Mail Activity and Hide My IP.
Settings/General/Transfer or reset iPhone/reset/reset network settings.
if you look at the Protect Mail activity description it says it’s using a multiple proxies. Then add Hide My IP and now you seemingly have put a bunch of hops and relays in between yourself and your email and then hid your IP so if it could get to you after all that, you are still hiding from it.
The features sound good and cool and it would be great if they worked (and maybe there is some Apple Techno Magic they do to make it all work some how), but I think if you want speed, you can’t turn on all the blocks/hides/reroutes just yet and expect it to work like it did before.

Give Apple Feedback:
Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know how gmail is a bit better. Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come.
Sorry to hear that. Have you tried chatting to Apple support? I got through in no time and they genuinely wanted to help. I would never have thought that signing out of iCloud and reloading it would have sorted my problem out. I wasn’t feeling too good about signing out of iCloud on my iPad but everything came back and I’m back to normal. P.S. It was my iPad that was slow, my iPhone seemed to be fine.
I have eleven mailboxes on my iphone X. Mail was very slow on IOS upgrade. I just waited a few hours for mail to synchronize and it regained speed.
I switched to the gmail app. Problem solved. Let me know when apple gets their act together and I may switch back assuming I grow attached to the gmail app.
Believe it or not. When I used my VPN app. The mail download went to back to normal. If I disabled the VPV it get stuck again.
Deleting the Mail app and re-installing did not work for me…only the reset and restore did the trick for me anyway.
Check what your interval for fetching email is
Settings -> Mail -> Accounts -> Fetch New Data
Turn your phone off/reboot. I updated and my mail loads properly again. Good luck!
Best solution I found? I stopped using mail. I go for the native programs or outlook which seems to be working far better...
Hey D C Mellor,
It sounds like you're having some trouble with Mail syncing on your iPhone.
Take a look at this resource for some help with the connection related to Mail: If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Have a great day.
I’ve given up on the native Apple mail app. I just use the gmail app now. It’s not as good, but it launches quickly and I get all my emails right away. It can handle all my email accounts.
It’s sad when a competitors product works better than their own product.
Same here, i am so frustrated that i miss a lot of things, appointments, invites, reports etc. just because i read mails late because my mails are not updating unless i go to mail and spam refresh. Sending mails are also freaking slow they get stuck in the outbox. I then turned off the privacy protection in Settings>Mail>Privacy Protection Protect Mail activity and Hide IP Address, and sending is now fast, but fetching mail is still slow, way better than before but still slow. And since i turned off the privacy protection i feel naked now. so this is not a good solution! The mail accounts doesn’t have Push option too! unlike icloud. All others only have fetch. but even if fetch is set as automatic and not a time interval, it doesnt seem like it is fetching data automatically. This is just so annoyingly frustrating and honestly causes more harm to those people whose time is very critical to their job!
And after running a while I tested to block remote content and it is ok now. Not sure if this helps.
No solution was needed for me in the end. It gets stuck forever only if you close the app from task bar. If you did so just do what was offered in this forum to unfreeze it once. Then to make it fully work just let it finish, will take long time once but that’s okay. After that you’ll be receiving all your emails right away.
I think they font have any solution. I’ve noticed that once mail have some animation inside, that one is loading very slow…like 4 min.
i installed outlook and set up my mail which is working fine.
Maybe apple can check how outlook is working and implement same solution.
this issue happen to me once i updated to ios 15.4
