What is causing email to download so slowly that it has virtually stopped since updating to iOS 15?

The fix for me was disabling Protect Mail Activity. Settings/Mail/Privacy Protection/ and turn off Protect Mail Activity and Hide IP address. Now checking Mail in the app works as fast as it did in ios14.
When I updated to Ios15 one of the options I remember getting prompted for was more privacy around Mail so I said yes. It works so well apparently you can’t check or send gmail accounts in a reasonable time frame with the iOS mail app.
I tried most of the other things in this thread before hand and nothing worked. Try turning off that new feature for now and see if things start working better.
I have been having the same issue as posted before. This is absolutely ridiculous. Are use my phone for work and need to receive my emails exactly when they are sent to me without delay. It is very important for me to process reservations.
not sure if this will help someone, but I have also downloaded the Gmail mail app. Trust me, we shouldn’t have to I’ve been using the Mail app for the past 10 years with no issues until the iOS updates. It’s funny how your phone updates by itself whether you wanted to or not. You paid $1000 for the phone and you don’t even have control over it.
now that I have the Gmail app at least I know I’m receiving an email then I can go onto my Mail app and refresh it and receive the email which again we shouldn’t have to do. Sometimes it takes several minutes for the email to show within the mail app when I have already received a notification from Gmail.
i’ll say it again, we shouldn’t have to do this but maybe this will help somebody as a failsafe
It’s gone on for so long and it’s getting worse not better. It takes 25-30 seconds for mail to load every single time - even if I’ve just checked my mail. Apple is doing nothing to resolve it. I need my mail to load properly in order to work efficiently. I desperately need a new laptop and want a new iPad but I don’t see any point in sticking with apple when I can’t even have working mail service on my phone or iPad. Considering leaving apple at this point and starting to check out other options. The only apple product I have that functions properly right now is my watch. If anybody has suggestions for non-apple laptops, phones and tablets let me know.
I also have this intermittent problem of iCloud emails taking forever to download and have had it a long time now. When it happens, emails that have already been read are not visible either and appear to be downloading again. Speaking to an apple rep, I was told it is almost certainly a problem with my internet provider. This led me to having wrangles and issues with them, however, now I have seen this community chat on the issue, I realise it is most definitely an apple problem. What I can't believe, is how it appears to have been ignored by apple since about this time last year !
My long term faith in apple is now questionable, due to the lack of response to the problem, experienced by so many apple users.
Using an iPhone 13 Pro + iOS 15.4.1 - this worked for me --
Settings --> Mail --> Privacy Protection --> turn off protect mail activity -->
Hide IP Address = on
Block all remote content = off
I have not experienced any more mail issues with the above settings.

So with the latest iPad iOS 15.5 mail app is even slower to load mail and crashes even more frequently than prior versions. I deleted the mail app, deleted al my accounts and reset network settings. Nothing helped. My iPhone with the exact same mail accounts and settings works as expected…used the feedback app several times to report with no word from apple.
I FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME. IT WAS RESTORING MY IPAD FROM MY COMPUTER. After trying every fix in this conversation (turning off mail privacy settings, etc) , I got in contact with apple support on twitter and set up a phone call with apple support. We worked on it over discussions during two days. The solution that finally solved it was backing up my iPad to iCloud, signing out of the iPad in settings, then connecting my iPad to my laptop and restoring the iPad from the Finder - which reinstalls the operating system. Then setting up the iPad again and signing back in. This completely solved the mail problems for me. It was a bit time consuming so you need to do it when you have a couple hours (maybe 1.5 hrs). The computer you use to connect with your iPad needs to be updated to the most current OS. Good luck!
Well done the Sqwoosh…
However, there are also folk that do not have a computer and some that could not handle the technical side of it all.
So they continue to have the ongoing problem.
To be honest, should we really have to be desperately trying things like that ?
I am still mystified as to why there is no official input about the problem and maybe assurances that it will or is being investigated. That is all it would take for people to accept what is going on. Or is that not how it works ?? Well done anyway for your sterling efforts.
i totally agree. Apple is doing nothing to address a widespread problem. And I’ve realized my problem hasn’t been completely solved. My mail no longer takes a full minute to load every single time I open it - but it still doesn’t push or fetch. So I have to open the app to check for mail, it never updates on its own. If you looks at the reviews for the mail app in the App Store you can see in the reviews how many people are having problems. I really don’t understand why they aren’t taking any action to fix things. It’s making me seriously rethink whether I want to stick with apple since I’m close to needing to update all my devices.
I also backed up my iPad to icloud and then factory reset from settings. After it reset I signed back in and restored from the latest backup. Seems to have fixed the slow Mail app issue…
Note, I did a backup to my MacBook but could not reset and restore from the Mac…strange. Anyway its working for now.
I just gave up on using the Apple mail app and downloaded the gmail app. I’ll switch back to Apple mail, once they fix the problem. The gmail app is lightning fast and allows you to add other email domains.
I tried resetting the phone and reinstalling from a backup. I tried deleting the mail app and reinstalling it again. None of this works still. I think this is Apples way of getting people to upgrade their phones.
I have just upgraded to iOS 15.5 and both my iPad and iPhone are not loading emails now.
It’s just stalled on ‘loading’.
Apple never used to be this poor when it came to updates but now every new one has issues, this one being by far the worst.
I was advised by Apple support to sign out of iCloud and sign back in again. I have just done this and my mail seems to be running okay again. Warning - make sure you read all of the messages when signing out of iCloud and select the relevant options to save your data.
Sorry to hear that. Have you tried chatting to Apple support? I got through in no time and they genuinely wanted to help. I would never have thought that signing out of iCloud and reloading it would have sorted my problem out. I wasn’t feeling too good about signing out of iCloud on my iPad but everything came back and I’m back to normal. P.S. It was my iPad that was slow, my iPhone seemed to be fine.
This seems to be turning into something of a farce. Nothing so far appears to be the answer with possibly thousands or more people experiencing the problem and yet it is being ignored by the company.
It is commendable that folk are trying to solve the problem with technical solutions, but what about the thousands of people with no technical skills at all; what are they supposed to do ?
Abandoned comes to mind.
