What is causing email to download so slowly that it has virtually stopped since updating to iOS 15?

The fix for me was disabling Protect Mail Activity. Settings/Mail/Privacy Protection/ and turn off Protect Mail Activity and Hide IP address. Now checking Mail in the app works as fast as it did in ios14.
When I updated to Ios15 one of the options I remember getting prompted for was more privacy around Mail so I said yes. It works so well apparently you can’t check or send gmail accounts in a reasonable time frame with the iOS mail app.
I tried most of the other things in this thread before hand and nothing worked. Try turning off that new feature for now and see if things start working better.
I think I might have been the person that suggested that. I’m sorry to report that after a couple weeks I’m back to mail not updating. However, I no longer have the long lag waiting for mail to load. It just won’t push or fetch so I have to manually refresh mail in order to get new emails. Apple just won’t deal with this.
I had two weeks of smooth sailing after I reloaded the iOS. But I’m back to square one again. I contacted apple via Twitter about the mail issue again. They’re willing to set up a phone conversation to help me with my devices but I can’t get anywhere when I ask if anybody is trying to actually resolve the issue with the mail app. I try to explain to them it’s a widespread problem but they are not the slightest bit responsive to that. I asked how to report a widespread problem and they won’t answer that question they’re only willing to set up a call with a tech. The last tech that found me the temporary solution via reloading the iOS also had no answers or suggestions about reporting that the problem is effecting multiple users, not just me. My brother in law just switched all his apple devices to Samsung and he’s really satisfied. He misses some apple things but overall he’s very happy he switched. I might follow suit. I have pretty much every type of apple device so I really don’t want to switch but it’s impacting my work at this point and I may not have a choice. I don’t understand why they won’t address this.
I am still having the same problem on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. It is rather infuriating that this has continued to be an issue through the last couple of iOS updates from Apple, which naively I expected they would address. Like you, I am close to abandoning the iPhone for a competing device. There are many, many threads on this from a lot of Apple users so this is not an isolated problem. I give Apple one more update to fix or this will be my last iPhone.
My latest problem with slow and unresponsive mail has gone on both my iPad (iOS 15.5) and new iPhone SE (iOS 15.5)
The fix for me was as simple as restarting iCloud on my iPad and turning it on and off a few times. And on my iPhone to turn it on and off a few times. If this doesn’t work for you I suggest setting up a call with Apple support so they can try and fix your problem.
Symptoms I experienced on my devices over a period of about 5 days: messages not being sent, partially loaded/displayed email page, slow response from the mail app.
After trying just about all of the fixes in this thread, I came across a discussion on a macrumors forum that suggested turning on alerts, and it worked for me. You have to do this for each mail account.
Settings -> Notifications -> Mail -> Customize Notifications -> Choose Your Mail Account -> Turn On Alerts
emails have slowed to a halt with this iOS update. it’s like Apple actively makes basic functions unworkable, so they can sell your another solution to their artificial created problems. My emails, with attachments, were faster back in the 90s.
I had this happen to me as well. None of the self-help articles worked. I even executed a reset/restore on my iPhone. I ended up removing all my email accounts from Settings>Mail>Accounts. Then I deleted the Mail app from my device. Re-downloaded it from the App Store and added my email accounts back to the device. Problem solved. I assess there must have been iOS compatibility issue with existing Mail app on my iPhone and by removing and downloading a new Mail app must have remedied the issue. Hope this helps.
I’ve been having all sorts of sluggishness on all three iOS devices we own, iPhones and iPads. It is beyond frustrating and the fixes suggested don’t fix anything. Of course they don’t!
There is no question about this. The reason is the iOS has become way too cluttered with useless features that makes the system clunky. Too many features that are confusing and not really helpful. But I guess Apple needs to keep on adding gimmicks so it looks like they are improving iOS. The reality is that as the system matures, there is only so much that can be added which is useful and the extra code will just drag the operating system down more than improve it.
My device is now fixed having done what I reported, so it’s not true to say “…the fixes suggested don’t fix anything.” , what is true is that whatever you have tried so far hasn’t worked. If you haven’t done so already I recommend speaking to Apple Support for as long as it takes for them to fix your problem.
We too had this problem one one of two iPhone 13s, one bad, one good. All the normal options, iCloud sign-out, phone resets, OS updates were no help. I then found I could delete the Mail app and re-install. That seems to have made the fix. It was confusing on reload as the iCloud account was apparently still signed in, and just needed to be authorized in settings for iCloud mail use and all is now well, back to normal instant operation.
I can't help keep wondering, despite so many suggested fixes, how the many thousands out there are not tech savvy and would have no idea how to try the suggested fixes. The longer this goes on, the more my loyal and long term faith in apple dissipates.
I have been using Mac computers since around 1986. For the first time in 36 years, I bought a Windows/Dell laptop. This mail situation is just one of many examples where the common issues of many users are ignored. I have no problems reading my Apple Mail now through my PC or on my phone using Outlook. Sad…never thought I’d buy a PC.
My wife is one of them. She’s not tech savvy and this email address issue is costing her, literally, she’s missing deadlines on work.
often, I check emails and refresh - it takes a long time but shows it is up to date at say 10:00. Then I check again at 10:30 and emails come in with a time stamp of for example 9:45.
29 years I’ve been using Macs and Apple
so it is hard for me to switch to anything else, but my wife hates the system. Issues are piling up and this is not the only issue.
Its a cliche, but this situation would not be possible under the original founder. Miss you mate.
So I got my emails working, but only by switching off wifi. It’s rather pathetic that Apple increasingly make us rely on workaround for the most basic functions. I have to switch off wifi to get emails on my iphone. On my ipad pro, it’s just not worth working with emails. Expensive equipment, that can’t do the basics.
Doesn’t not make any difference here with wifi on or off.
Apart from mail being slow, on iPad, I often find it is unresponsive for several seconds do when I switch to mail. I’m getting these window options on the bottom, a useless feature for me which I just ignore, and when I click on a message or something it does not respond immediately.
