Unclear robotic voice on iPhone 13 Max Pro phone call

I have recently purchased an iPhone 13 Max Pro. I have a problem on occasion (often) when I get a phone call or when I make a call, the other person sounds like a robot. It switches to normal voice and back to the robotic sound. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated, thanks.

No afraid not. Apple checked the phone and said all okay - I then went to ee and they said “oh we get 4-5 Apple users a day with this problem” their best guess is that one of the iOS software updates created this problem. But Apple are blaming the network and the network are saying it’s down to Apple. I tried another network (Vodafone) same problem 🤬

Im having the same issue on my new Iphone 13 pro. on Verizon My previous iphone 10x did not do this. My wife's iphone 10 does not do this. My son's iphone 12 doesnt do this.

Carrier settings are all up to date.

iOS is up to date.

Doesnt matter if I'm on wifi or using cellular.

Doesnt matter if I use airpods pro or not.

In a 1 hour call this happens about 4-5 times and lasts for about 10 seconds each time.

I cannot understand the other people on the call, and they cannot understand me during that 10 seconds.

Is this a hardware error that I can have fixed under warranty?

I've been battling this issue for at least two years now. I get a new iPhone every year so it has been doing this on at least 2 if not 3 past iPhone models. I thought it was related to AirPods Pros. I just bought a new set and had the same problem. Then yesterday I bought a pair of Sony bluetooth earbuds and on my first call I got a robotic voice. That's when I realized it was the phone and found this thread. It is almost comical at this point that this issue isn't being handled. I spoke to Apple Support and he said it wasn't a common issue so I told him to look up this thread. As he was doing that he either hung up on me or the call dropped. And I never get dropped calls. So I'll be returning the new Sony headphones and the two new sets of AirPods Pros that I just purchased for myself and my girlfriend (she's having the same issue too.) I just ordered a pair of wired headphones so I can actually make hands-free calls. Unfortunately, I'm too tired into the Apple ecosystem to switch to an Android phone at this point.

I don’t know if their problem is the same as mine but it doesn’t matter who I call where I am at WiFi call or cellular call it still happens my carrier has replaced my phone and everyone I get has the same issue I am up-to-date on updates and I am getting very frustrated I’m ready to get rid of my iPhone 12 Pro Max my husband has an iPhone SE but we haven’t done the latest updates on his and he’s not having a problem so maybe it is some thing in Apple’s latest update that is causing this problem

So I posted already about experiencing the same issues as everyone else. But I want to give an update because I found the problem for my phone. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max on Verizon. What I noticed was that the problem wasn’t happening when I was on my car speaker phone or simply talking on speaker. It was only happening when I had my AirPod Pros connected. So once I realized that, I have given it a few tests to ensure that that was the issue. And sure enough if I am not connected to my AirPod pros than the distortion and breaking up does not happen. So now I realize that the problem is not the phone but the AirPod Pros when they are connected. Still annoying, because the AirPod pros work fine listening to music but for some reason they distort every phone conversation. Sounding as if there’s interference or as if I have a bad signal. So it’s very weird. These are my third AirPod pros because something has always been wrong with them. So I’m assuming Apple sent me a refurbished pair and that may be the issue. But everyone in my family who uses regular AirPods do not have this problem. Hope this helps someone maybe narrow down the issue.

I'm facing exactly the same issue. I also have a Macbook and an Apple Watch and when I answer a call on one of these devices the same issue occurs on those too. The root of the problem seems to be the iPhone (12). Latest iOS update 15.5 did not fix this issue. It's pretty annoying. Sometimes you can talk for minutes and randomly the voice sounds robotic and you cannot understand a word. Sometimes it happens seconds after answering a call. Strangely this problem never occurs when I use my AirPods Pro for calling someone.

I just got a 13mini and have the same issue. Any contact, wifi or cellular. I was on a call did not move and could hear next they sound like a robot. It was not an issue from the carrier or wifi. I never had this issue with my last phone and no one else in my family has this issue. I have had the phone for a week and it has happened at least 4 times. Different areas, different calls, different contacts. The only thing we all have in common is the phone itself.

I have purchased an iPhone 13 mini about a month ago and have the same issue. I have been going back-and-forth with my serviced and AppleCare and no one is able to fix this issue. It has been going on for one month now and it is very stressful especially when I use my phone for my work. I have to constantly hang up and call the person back and often it happens many times during one call. I have been told that there should be a fix, but there isn’t any so far. This is very frustrating, what am I supposed to do about this?

Hello bpinmel,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that there are some audio issues on your phone calls.

Does this happen with a particular contact or multiple? Does it happen on Wi-Fi or cellular? That might help isolate when and where this occurs.

Updating your carrier settings may help. Use the guidance from Manually update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad for guidance.

If you experience this when connected to Wi-Fi, try disabling/enabling Wi-Fi calling to see if that makes a difference - Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling.

Have a great day!
