Unclear robotic voice on iPhone 13 Max Pro phone call

I have recently purchased an iPhone 13 Max Pro. I have a problem on occasion (often) when I get a phone call or when I make a call, the other person sounds like a robot. It switches to normal voice and back to the robotic sound. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Ahhh, no solution for this yet? I had this with my last iPhone and then I upgraded and it does it with this phone too. I'm on AT&T. We have 5 people in our home all with iPhones and only mine does this with every single call. When it happens I can switch to speaker phone and it seems to circumvent it for that time, but then it will do it again within a few minutes of the same call. Does it with Airpods, on Speaker, on normal calls. I haven't had it do it on facetime yet. I've tried on wifi and off and no difference. My Carrier is up to date. HEEELLLPPP!!

Hi everyone, I have the iPhone 14 Pro which I bought back in December 2022, since then it’s been a nightmare with the garbled, robotic phone calls. I’ve been with T-Mobile for the past 8 years and never before had this problem. I had countless phone calls with T-Mobile to reset the network and also been to Apple twice with no solution from either of them. Apple finally agreed to replace my phone last week and for the first day it was working fine, on day 2 the robotic phone calls came back with a revenge. This is truly upsetting as this is the latest, and more expensive phone Apple has. I thought of switching carriers but after seeing all these replies I realize it is not carrier-related. Not sure what to do at this point. I hope they figure out a solution soon.

So after dealing with this for about a year and a half, I’ve tried everything besides getting a new phone or switching carriers. The robotic sound happens to me while using AirPods, connected via Bluetooth to my car or my Roku, but also while using speakerphone. It never occurs while just using the phone normally with the “handset”. It happens via wifi or cellular, so there’s no difference unfortunately. I have a 13 Pro Max.

I’ve spent endless amounts of hours over the last year and a half on the phone and via text with Apple trying a ton of troubleshooting. I also went to my nearest Apple Store (which is 40 minutes away) and spent the entire day there troubleshooting. They couldn’t fix it and wanted me to send my phone in (for up to 3 weeks, lol!!!) to see IF they could fix it with no effort in giving me a backup method to use a different phone. Since I run 2 businesses from home, it is not feasible for me to be phoneless and I had to refuse to try that option.

So one thing that I do have is dual sim. I have my regular sim and an added eSim. The issue will occur on both phone numbers. Does anyone/everyone else use dual Sim by chance?

My boyfriend and I bought the same model phones at the same time and his phone has been fine all along. I’ve read reports of other people getting new phones or going to a new carrier and the problem continues.

I wonder if our phone numbers have something to do with the issue… somehow? I don’t know how things work in the backend to know if this might be the problem but… That would be the only common thing left I would think. The phone number is corrupting things… Maybe…? Or it’s a faulty Bluetooth thing…? I don’t know. I just want to fix this! It’s super unprofessional during a sales call for my two tech-based companies when my phone keeps going robotic and the customer can’t hear me. :(

At this point, I’ve given up and hope that time heals the problem (someone finally figures it out). No hands-free for me unfortunately!

Exactly the same issue @Touchofasian28 and I had this with my last phone an iphone 11 and upgraded to the 13 Pro Max and have the same thing. All I can think is it's something in the settings that is causing the issue, because we back up our phones and import them into the new phone. It can't be a hardware issue, but something in the settings. If I didn't also run my businesses from my phone and have so many things, I'd wipe the phone myself and try and use it and see if the problem still exists. My wife and daughter got new phones, same plan, same network and no issues at all.

This has nothing to do with the carrier, I have changed carrier 3 times in the UK now and still have this problem. I had the same problem with my iPhone 7 over a number of years. I stupidly stayed with Apple and now have the 13pro and still have the same problem. I will jump over to Samsung next as my gf never has any problems and she’s on the same network as me.

I get these robotic voices through the phone, hands free etc. it’s an Apple problem that they don’t seem to acknowledge or want to fix

Soooo… they did wipe my phone and I went about 3 hours (having NOTHING… lol… no contacts, no 2-factor authentication apps, no saved passwords, etc). I spoke on the phone with my BF for about an hour and the issue did not occur. Though the problem is random so… it doesn’t ALWAYS occur but occurs often and sometimes a lot more than other times.

Anyway, because of the 2-factor authentication apps I couldn’t get into, I couldn’t get into email and social media (I’m a social media marketer and web designer so… lol… kinda needed back in), I restored my backup.

I think you’re onto something, Jerry, but I haven’t wrapped my head around how I could backup and restore all of my stuff without actually RESTORING my stuff, if that makes sense?

Mar 24, 2023 10:26 AM in response to Touchofasian28

Completely makes sense, I'm in the same boat. We need Apple support to take someone's profile that is having this issue and fool with turning various things on/off and restoring to get to the bottom of it.

My next step is to start manually changing various options myself back to what comes factory and using it for a day or so. ugh, this is so frustrating.

I have the same issue with my iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 16.4, though this has been happening since iOS 16 was introduced, that I've noticed anyway. The interesting thing is that this only happens when I am talking with someone else that is using an iPhone. It never occurs with an Android user. It also mainly occurs in my house when using my AirPods Pro 2 (FW: 5B58), however, it happened the other day without the pods in my ears, but I had just switched the call audio from AirPods to speaker, and put my pods away in their case.

I also have another issue where I receive duplicate messages (one as iMessage, the other as SMS) simultaneously, but only from other iPhone users, so I'll look for that thread (hopefully I'm not the only one with this issue). Drives me bonkers.

Same problem here with iPhone 14 pro max and iPhone 13 mini. Things worked fine for a few months after purchase then both started cutting out and going “robotic”. ATT tried to help but to no avail. They’ve created a service ticket to escalate the issue but could be a week before I hear from them. Happens on 5G, 5G Only, or LTE settings. Really ****** off I have $2K worth of phones and I can’t have a conversation with my doctor.

Our issue has resolved, sorry to say that I can't be sure as to what exactly did it. It's a long and convoluted story. At least two or three calls to ATT. They boosted the signal on a nearby tower after not finding anything wrong with either of our phones. I told them that the problem occurred no matter where we are so that could not be the issue. Called Apple support, they sent us to an Apple Store - 200 mile roundtrip. Everything supposedly was OK, wiped the phones to factory reset and sent us on our way. Made a couple of calls and the problem was back for both phones. Called and texted ATT again. More "diagnostic checks", no obvious issues. made a couple of calls, the issue returned on both phones. Called Apple again, support person said we needed new phones. Another 200 mile round trip to the Apple Store. They ran a much more thorough check, antennas and all. No problems and wouldn't replace the phones. Said the phone support shouldn't have said what that the phones would be replaced. They gave me a store phone to call ATT. On the phone for an hour and a half reprovisioning phone. The support person found a few identifier mismatches between the iPhone Pro Max and ATT, the iPhone 13 identifiers were fine. Drove home, issue started again. Went to the local ATT store and gave them holy ****. Turns out on that day the provisioning servers were acting up. They tech checked the phone it it looked like it had been reprovisioned several times, possibly during those sessions with ATT prior to our Apple Store visits. Also learned a nearby cell tower on a university library that was being readied for demolition had been torn down and not replaced yet. Three days later I made a call ... it worked. The new tower is installed and we haven't had any issue with either phone since. An Apple employee did mention that they had seen the issue before and it was not carrier specific.

Didn't matter, 5G, LTE, tried it all. It was the craziest thing. These were two barely four month old phones, different models but both with eSims. Worked fine then boom, it started happening. There's three phones on the account, son's phone is a iPhone 11 Pro with standard sim, no 5G. We did a bit of an upgrade to our ATT service about 2 weeks before it started happening. Son who lives in another town about 100 mile from us has never had the issue. Our issue occurred no matter the location, so that would rule out the tower as the cause, at least for us. It could very well have been a multitude of related, snowballing issues. We've been iPhone 2, 4, 6, and 8, 10 users on AT&T prior to our current phone. Never any issues like this.
