iPhone SE2 NFC not working after upgrade to 15.6

summary so far:

• lost NFC ( near face communication) when scanning Abbot glucose sensor after updating iPhone SE 2 to iOS 15.6. Suspect Apple Pay installation in this update to be the reason. Many with me reports the same thing after updating to many different iOS versions ( not only 15.6). Also NFC error reports on other iPhone versions than SE
• Abbott support says it is a general problem with iPhone SE which NFC can at anytime stop working. Apple support says it is no problem with the NFC on my iPhone SE after diagnostics at on-line-call. Abbott to blame. Want to prove it by testing that Apple Pay works which I have not done yet
• hard boot of phone and resetting all settings on phone is not helping.
• installed NFC tools app today on my iPhone SE 2 and and on my son’s iPhone 11: the app cannot read anything like tags or my Abbott sensor on my iPhone SE but no problem on the iPhone 11. Conclusion is that Abbott is right and Apple is wrong.
• Will try the following. 1 Try Apple Pay, 2 if possible uninstall Apple Pay and 3 if possible reinstall the backup from 4 days ago ( before 15.6 update)

I got right now a text message saying that I will get replacement phone but it will take a few days. Don't know which test they've done to get to this conclusion. Would have been interesting to talk to them about all others that have had the same experience as us. Besides fully "restore" the phone is opening and closing an NFC app the only reported working actions what I can see. Look in the link below which is very similar to me but with 15.4 instead of 15.6.

Yes Appearently as I just passed one year. There was a campaign with a good price, extra of "everything" included, more iCloud, accessories, etc. Please test to install the NFC app "GoToTags" that was described here:

My iphone se 2020 quit reading NFC Tags 2 days after the update to IOS15.6. I am frequently using this feature with my Freestylelibre 2 app. Lost 4 days of my sensor because of that. Abbott claims that the iphone SE2 is the reason. Obviously they are right because I neither can read any other tags. Called the Apple support yesterday. They recommend updating the iphone with itunes again in recovery mode, if that not worked they suggest restoring. I did the update in recovery mode, which did not help. I hate the second step, because of cumbersome work to bring in all settings again. They do not recommend restoring from the backup. Its weird.

Status report

Hi I'm back with an old Nokia GSM phone to be able to log in here after turning in my iPhone SE2 at an apple approved service shop yesterday after calling the apple service support who made the appointment ( I guess it is the same or similar to that you call Genious bar )

Remember that I first called the local apple support here in Sweden who made an on-line diagnosis of my phone and said it was nothing wrong and it works as it should. "The problem is on app side." The app support (Abbott) says that it is the NFC on my iPhoneSE that can stop working anytime that is the problem.

Before I left the iPhone on the apple support shop I had downloaded the same NFC app to my iPhone SE and to mu sons iPhone 11. The iPhone 11 could read tags and my Abbott sensor but not my phone. I also added a credit card to Apple Pay and we went to the same shop to by ice cream. My phone wAS NOT able to get any contact with the reader but it was no problem with my sons phone.

NFC is appearantly not working after all

Before turning it in I've also tested resetting all setting but not resetting the whole phone which has been suggested and not working. My best guess is still that the NFC problem has to do with settings applied for Apple Pay installation during the 15.6 update. I have been requested to finalize the Apple Pay installation during many earlier upgrades but always ignored it and been continously been reminded to do it. I don't know what happended during 15.6 but the reminders stopped also.

NFC stopped working on SE 2020My NFC capability suddenly stopped working and I can’t find a way to troubleshoot it. It worked fine for a year previously (Apple Pay and Freestyle Libre for blood sugars). It happened overnight while lying on a table (it wasn’t acute physical damage) and was before the most recent iOS 14 update (I updated it the next day after noticing the NFC wasn’t working). I tested Apple Pay at 2 different stores. I hard rebooted the phone a couple times, signed out and back into my Apple ID, and reinstalled the Libre app. No dice. Is it likely hardware?1year ago

NFC/Apple pay not working in iPhone 7 after iOS 13.1 updateI had updated to iOS 13.1 last week and the apple pay/NFC stopped working. Checked with the Apple technicians in 3 different stores and they are not aware of this issue and they have no clue on resolution. The NFC reader in the store also failed to recognise the device. The nly response from the technicians is to factory reset the device. Trouble shooting I performed: I tried re-adding the card restarting the device. iPhone 11 Pro Max not workingI got a new iPhone 11 pro max 2 days ago and the NFC reader doesn't seem to work. I simply tried to touch my phone with an NFC card (NFC visa debit card, NFC travel card and other NFC reader mode phones) but there was no trigger. NFC not working until iPhone fully restoredHi I have a very strange problem. At some point my Apple Pay stopped recognising terminals in stores, like NFC wasn't working. I brought it to the services point, they checked with their NFC device, and it wasn't working neither. They took it restored it and NFC started working again. I logged in to my Apple ID (I didn't restore the backup, I set it up as a new device) and added my cards – Apple Pay started working again. After 5 days it stopped. In service point they told me that they can't repair it because it seems that NFC is working. But I keep restoring phone, Apple Pay works perfectly for a while and then again it stops. I can't restore and set up my phone as a new device every week... When it comes to online payments Apple Pay works perfectly at all times. Does anyone have any idea why it can be like that and what can I do to repair it? Thanks! Kacper2 years ago

Hi! Before I got a new phone ( hardware error officially) and because I suspected the Apple Pay installation to be the source of the error I was asking Askbarnabus here on the community on how to uninstall Apple Pay. He has both answered that’s not possible but also: You can go to iCloud.com go to account settings>tap on your iPhone>remove Apple Pay from device. Is this something you can try? When did you install Apple Pay? Have you been running both Abbott and Apple Pay together for a long time? If you like me installed Apple Pay during the 15.6 update, I think it could be worth a try to also uninstall Abbott and other NFC apps you have, install Apple Pay again and try. Check nfc function after each step. It’s a long shot but…..

Erasing your device and setting it up as new might resolve this issue. The download could have been corrupted somehow (corrupted does not mean hacked or faulty)

Since we are all users here we cannot troubleshoot NFC issues. What you can do though is go to this link Contact Support and they can perform a hardware diagnostics while you chat with them or you can make an appointment at your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar for an evaluation.

I’m scanning my diabetes glucose sensor Libre view from Abbott with the NFC reader on my one year old iPhoneSE. 2 days ago after over night automatic updating to 15.6 it stopped working. Could become a very severe and dangerous situation for a diabetic. Called abbott support who says they are not approving their app for use with iPhone SE due to this problem ( long before 15.6 update). Reading discussions on this support site it seems not to be just a iPhone SE problem and not only upgrade to 15.6. You can read that it happens with 15.4, 15.5 and if I remember right on iPhone 8, 11, 12,13. No one seems to be able to find the common reason and apple are ignoring it. For me it was the first time i let the over night automatic update run on my phone. When I’ve done it manually earlier I have always stopped before the full configuration leaving Apple Pay unattended. The red bullet showing that you have unattended upgrades to do have been on but is now gone. This might be a clue for some of you that know more than me.

If you think it is a setting you can go to settings>general>reset>and reset all settings. If it is an internal settings I don't know what it is. There is always risk when erasing a device but the reward of it working again is worth it. If you read my first response in this thread you will find the first step in this process.

If you sign out of your Apple ID and back in then Apple Pay should be inactive (all cards removed) You cannot turn off Apple Pay you can only remove your cards from Wallet. You can go to iCloud.com go to account settings>tap on your iPhone>remove Apple Pay from device. you cannot revert to a previous iOS
