Same on mine. I've never used a screen protector and never had a single scratch on any previous model of iphone I've had (and I've had a bunch of them). Usually kept in pocket on its own, but after a few months I have 3 rather large somewhat deep scratches (that I can physically feel with my fingernail). I do believe the quality of this glass isn't as good as previous models. :-(

I have applecare but seems ridiculous to replace the screen for a few scratches, and no actual cracks or brokenness. I believe Apple should recall the screens on these and offer free replacements with higher quality ones.

If you search the forum you will find people complaining that their new iPhone's screen scratched and none of their past iPhones scratched as many versions of the iPhone as you would like to go back for; the "similar questions" header at the top of this post will show you just a few.

I've posted this article several times before, and though it's from 2018, what it has to say is still applicable:

The Verge: Why your brand-new smartphone will scratch just as easily as your old one

and it also largely discusses Samsungs.

Because it's a risk you took by not choosing to apply a screen protector at the time of purchase.

Is Ceramic Shield slightly softer than the glass used on models before the iPhone 12? Ever so slightly, but that also makes it much less prone to shatter than older iPhone glass was.

There's a trade-off between being impervious to scratches and being likely to shatter.

Having said that, independent tests have shown that the iPhone 14 glass is roughly a Mohs 6, pretty much the same as the iPhone 11's.

Hello ~ My screen protectors are much less that that. It’s the first thing that goes on right out of the box when I get a new iPhone. I am a bit of an overprotector…back glass protector, camera protector and high quality case as well. I took my old SE 1st gen out of the box to check it over the other day and there is not a scratch on it anywhere and it could pass for brand new!

I’m sorry - when you purchase a phone that’s over a £1000, why am I expected to stick an extra layer of film to protect it? A phone case is an accessory and I hate how the film feels and looks on the phone. I’ve had iphones for many years and it generally took good few years for a visible scratch to appear (from occasional drop or something)

When you buy a car, if you don't apply a clear bra to the front end, the paint is subject to rock chips.

When you buy a residence, you have to maintain it.

The price of an item is of no consequence when it comes to protecting it; in fact because it is an expensive device, one would think you would be more likely to apply a screen protector to protect the screen.

Scratches may occur for a variety of reasons, so just because you were lucky with an older device, it does not mean the hardness of your new phone's screen is lower; in fact it is no different from at the very least the iPhone 12 and 13, which also had Ceramic Shield screens, not to mention other premium smartphones from other vendors.

Your comment about old iPhones is exactly like saying you've never been in a car accident; that doesn't mean someone won't run into you five minutes after you've driven your brand new dream car off the lot.

There are various articles at third party websites that detail this further that can be found through use of a search engine.

Hey Dogcow-Moof

You have always had a screenprotector on your iPhones. Therefore you have no experience with the scratching of the screens of the different versions iPhone.

I have never had a screenprotector on any of my previous iPhones. And so have many in this thread. Scratching was never a problem, until the 14 Pro.

This thread is about scratching, not about preventing it, and it is not about screenprotectors. You have made your screenprotector point many times now. Please refrain from posting in this thread about screenprotectors. You are not helping the discussion. Thank you.

Hello~ As long as we post within the bounds of the rules stated within the agreement we all had to agree to comply with we may post as we please. If you feel the screen of your iPhone 14 Pro is not what’s best for you either take it up with Apple who does not read these threads, leave them feedback in the link that I will post or get something else that meets your needs and expectations. Applying a screen protector is an attempt to help prevent damage and/or make the current damage less apparent. What do you think would help this discussion?

Screen protectors vary in cost, style and performance and I don't want Apple to include a protector I would need to remove to apply my own.

Instead, Apple offers you a choice - you can use one they sell at the Apple Store, one you purchase elsewhere or none at all if you don't care about scratches.

They give you the choice.

FWIW, Samsung used to apply one at the factory on past Galaxy models; they no longer do so on the Galaxy S22 and S23.

I agree, this constant recommendation of screen protectors makes me think that this a way swaying this conversation from an important point about iPhone 14 pros screen scratches to a screen protector advertisement.

We are very upset and are very careful users, I wish I knew about this and would’ve definitely bought a screen protector when I bought the phone.

It’s like buying new car, would you put a PPF or not and most buyers won’t unless you know that the new car’s paint is going to be more easily damaged than the previous models.

I hope it make sense. Thank you.

So I have bought a screenprotector... Belkin Ultra glass...the one Apple says I should buy, not cheap!

I have cleaned and wiped and made sure I was in a dustfree environment. But still after applying the protector I got 6 spots on the screen with a dust particle. When I tried to reapply there were 15, and again 47. It is a one off deal. There is no retry, that is obvious.

Patches with air which I cannot remove. What a shame. Screenprotectors are such a waste of vision. You loose everything the screen has to offer. I have requested a refund.

I rather have scratches than the terrible vision through the screenprotector. Blurry, air circles, dust particles, shiny patches. How can anyone accept a screenprotector on an € 1500 phone? So cheap!

Feb 9, 2023 3:23 PM in response to Masterbrewerperron

A € 1500 iPhone with screenprotector is ridicuous. A simple soul cannot apply the protector without losing all that the superior iPhone screen has to offer.

If a protector is necesary, then Apple should apply it from the factory. Applying it afterwards gives bad results. Air pockets, dust particles, etc.

Apple is wrong, and you should acknowledge this, instead of pointing to the screen protector. The screen protector is not a solution. It is a cheap way of sending customers in to the dark!

A screen protector degrades the user experience, the screen is less clear, less reactive, full of air patches. It is not what Apple had in mind for their customers. It can never be the advised route to happiness. This forum should stop advertising it. And if they do, there

must be a financial thing going on ...
