Same on mine. I've never used a screen protector and never had a single scratch on any previous model of iphone I've had (and I've had a bunch of them). Usually kept in pocket on its own, but after a few months I have 3 rather large somewhat deep scratches (that I can physically feel with my fingernail). I do believe the quality of this glass isn't as good as previous models. :-(

I have applecare but seems ridiculous to replace the screen for a few scratches, and no actual cracks or brokenness. I believe Apple should recall the screens on these and offer free replacements with higher quality ones.

No no no, stop the car analogy, this is about an iPhone not a car, cars have nothing to do with this.

Apple charges almost € 50 for the silly screen protector that can be bought everywhere else for half price.

bubbles, dust, patches all-inclusive. Even Apple personnel cannot apply the protector without patches.

These silly protectors reduce the renowned Apple experience so much.

I don't even get it out of the house , i use it like a house phone since i prefer samsung for work and i found a very tiny scratch on the screen you need to put light and search for it and it will show only if the light is coming vertically on the screen but that is unacceptable , no reason at all to be scratched because am beyond careful with it

This is beyond unacceptable. Like many of you - I’ve owned an iPhone consistently over the last 12 years and have NEVER had to put any kind of protective film on the front facing glass. I upgraded from an XS Max that I owned for 3 years and it had 0 scratches - I’ve had the 14 less than 5 months and the scratches are insane.

the product is subpar in comparison to previous models.

I feel your pain, we are all here in the same boat apart from one or two whose are only trying to sell screen protector instead of acknowledging our pain. I’ve have the apple support so planning to pay £20 to replace the screen but the issue is my friend phone got scratched with the authentic screen protector from apple so not sure how much it will protect but worth a shot.

Same here. My iPhone 14 Pro Max has been getting scratches since day 1, and it's still ongoing.
It's crazy because I'm super careful with my phone.

Very disappointed.

And yet, you still haven't installed a good quality screen protector, which would prevent more scratches and likely hide the ones you have? Complaining about something which can be solved easily doesn't make a lot of sense.

In summary, if you treat an iPhone 14 Promax carefully, like your previous phones that were fine, this one won’t be.

That's not accurate; some who are very careful with their phones have not experienced any scratching.

it REQUIRES a screen protector. In which case for a phone at this price point I would argue it should be factory supplied and fitted properly in a dust-free environment.

Again, given how many different protectors are on the market to meet disparate needs, I wouldn't want to pay for a protector I am going to immediately replace with my own.

BTW two separate people from Apple today (one in the store, one on phone support) both said the same thing about shatter v scratch, so it’s obviously widely known to Apple staff, who knew this in user land? I certainly didn’t.

It's known in the industry overall, that's why I keep quoting the article The Verge wrote about it (and about Samsungs, not about iPhones at all) in 2018:

The Verge: Why your brand-new smartphone will scratch just as easily as your old one

No sorry, when you are at version 14 of something, there is an expectation about given performance levels. Scratch resistance in this case. You don’t expect newer, more expensive iterations of something to be worse in some areas than earlier ones.

On top of that, the manufacturer boasts of an improvement in that area, when in reality one aspect of it is degraded from previous versions. that is misrepresentation.

the article quoted talks about plateauing, I understand that. If it wasn’t any better in this version than previous because of a technology limit, OK, then at the very least the advertising shouldn’t be implying it is.

But actually, and here’s the point, it isn’t ‘only as good as previous versions’ - it’s worse. So are you really arguing it’s OK for Apple to imply an improvement in something that has actually deteriorated because there is an article somewhere that says this and we should have all sought this out ourselves?

I like Apple, I like Apple products, I consider myself a fan. I just don’t think this one aspect of what they are doing is OK.

‘Because we’ve been working hard to make your new screen more shatter resistant than ever, that does mean you’re going to need a screen protector for your new iPhone 14 to prevent scratches, even if you haven’t needed one before’

That’s it, that’s all they needed to say. I even wrote the copy in Applespeak for them.

if I then choose to ignore this, it’s on me. No argument.

none of that happened. Instead I have a flagship product that’s 7 months old and covered in scratches.

The Apple reps I spoke to yesterday both told me it was worse - I merely agreed with them. Maybe you should correct them not me.

You don’t compare to pre-ceramic shield models, I suspect because they were more scratch resistant.

I have no problem spending $30 on a screen protector, I even just ordered one, albeit after the damage is done.

The point you are going to great lengths to miss is that I previously never needed one and now I apparently do.

I can only speak for myself but none of my previous iPhones have scratched without screen protectors and this one has despite treating them the same, what conclusion would you draw in my position?

They're giving an opinion, not speaking for Apple per se, and are wrong. You can find multiple videos of people who follow the same methodology to test the scratch resistance of new phones using industry standard testing tools, and they arrive at the same results for all Ceramic Shield phones - a Mohs scale reading of around 6, which is the same as the iPhone 7.

I can't speak for iPhones earlier than that.

Perhaps, but they were much more shatter-prone. Most would rather have a screen that doesn't shatter when dropped because you can fully protect it with a $30 screen protector; as I mentioned previously, a screen protector can't stop a brittle screen from cracking.

The point you are going to great lengths to miss is that I previously never needed one and now I apparently do.

Different people have different definitions of "need."

I've never owned an iPhone without a screen protector, not even the original iPhone.

It's like driving a car without auto insurance - you may have never have had an accident and then your car is totaled driving your new car out of the dealership.

I and others here have advocated applying a screen protector before you even turn on the phone for the first time back to at least the iPhone 6.

I can only speak for myself but none of my previous iPhones have scratched without screen protectors and this one has despite treating them the same, what conclusion would you draw in my position?

That obviously there was some debris on your fingertips that caused scratches on your new device and you were just lucky with past devices.

Again, tests have shown that at least since the iPhone 12 screens have not become more scratch-prone.
