macOS 13.2 Ventura cannot connect to smb share

Downgrading the SMB server to 13.1 works for me flawlessly together with 13.2 clients.

It’s not something you would be typically be aware of. Custom icon files are created by many programs like Google Drive and Drop Box. If your familiar with using Terminal you can observe custom folder files by typing the following at the root of any mounted volume:

find . -name Icon?

I find that if I connect to the home folder of the account doing the sharing - you know those shares which appear when you enable sharing without having to explicitly share them by name - those shares seem to work. However as soon as I attempt to connect to a share which points to an external drive then it no longer retrieves a directory listing and if I go back to one of the built in standard shares which previously worked then that stops working as well.

I have a 12tb external drive which is effectively useless now.

Make sure you all report this to Apple so they realise there is a big problem.

I am having this issue after 13.2 upgrade.

2018 mac Mini and 2021 M1 MBP.

Connecting to Share on either machine freezes/crashes finder.

I can load 2 different Synology devices successfully.

Stopping/Restart/Starting file sharing has no effect.

The fix won’t likely work for entire volumes due to custom folder icons used by many apps. See additional comments I made to reddit post if interested. Apple is going to have to fix this. The more people that file a bug report the more likely it will garner attention.

Problem persists on Ventura 13.2 in spite of reformatting of volumes and sharing setup in new folders on (legacy) Pegasus Promise 1 and 2 raid systems – maybe because of Promise drivers custom icons on drive volumes!?

To me this sounds like a downgrade session to 13.1. Annoying but unavoidable.

Same issue here. Tried it on several Macs with 13.2. It works sometimes for a short time and then it's broken again. The usual solution didn't work.

This is definitely a big problem, made from apple. Hope for a emergency-release.

Works great.... until I attempt to connect to the share with my iPhone. When I do this, the whole SMB share freezes forcing a restart. It does come back, but I can knock out the whole share just by attempting to connect via iPhone device.

Good info... didn't work for me. I'm sharing whole drives out. A 20TB RAID6 and a 6TB WD USB3 (file share and Time Machine backup drives... Backblaze won't touch a drive if there's any folder setup to do Time Machine backups)

WELP... there was the simplest solution to something this was plaguing me for DAYS!! My only addition to that solution was that I had to restart. Thanks for sharing! (so... do I send my bill for lost work hours directly to Mr. Apple?)

I have huge shared folders, which are also not under my control. So this fix is hopeless for me. It also worries me, that a custom icon can crash an essential part of the OS. Having been a unix sysadm for more than two decades, I don't want to touch 13.2 with a ten foot pole. 13.3 will be new game new luck ;-)

I'm struggling with this on a new M2 mini. Cannot run Monterey. Sharing and permissions correct.

I've tried the following: 1) a full clean Recovery re-install, 2) deleting the smb prefs. No joy.

Oddly, Screen Sharing works.
