IPhone 15 Pro Max keyboard not registering clicks and some keys are not sensitive

Anyone experiencing insensitive keys on the keyboard? Some keys near the edge of my phone that are noticeably less sensitive and irresponsive than the rest (with and without a screen protector). I have to click pretty hard multiple times in order for the keys to register. The keys that are having issues registering my clicks are Backspace and "P". I tested the demo phones in the store and they all seem normal and much more sensitive.

I had the same exact issue. Just updated to IOS 17.1, which, according to Apple:

Fixes an issue that may cause the keyboard to be less responsive

And it does! Issue resolved. My backspace, “L” key and “M” key are functioning again!

Hope it works for y'all as well.

I totally agree. I went to the apple store today and have the staff helped me about this. They tried restore multiple times and tried to reinstall the firmware. still doesn't work. I tried the demo phone for 15 15plus 15pro and 15pm. 15 pm is the only one has the issue. all 15 pm demo phones in the store have this issue. the apple staff stated they didn't notice this issue, no hardware issue, balabala, but the issue is there for sure. i am not crazy. it's soooo different and worse than my 13 pm. apple staff told me they can't even guarantee apple will fix this. they suggested me to return the phone.

I have this problem on my new Pro Max and it wasn’t just the keyboard, I noticed it first while playing Tetris that taps to rotate the blocks were missed.

I tried some of the suggestions like resetting the settings and that didn’t seem to do anything. I also tried turning off predictive text but that didn’t seem to make sense either.

It seemed unlikely that after all these years Apple would mess up something as basic as screen calibration it seemed to me like it’s more likely the issue is related to some odd power management issue. Anyways, I turned off the auto lock feature and that seems to improve things quite a bit. Still have some issues with p and l though

i hope this is something that can be fixed with a software update

I think you are making this up Albert, to make things appear more widespread than they really are, dozens of iphones tested at an apple store, ppl returning 3 phones, that is very unlikely for a thread that has a little over 50 complaints. Apple has sold millions of iphones 15s. Imo it is a hardware issue and can be easily fixed by exchanging the phone. Worked for me, worked for many others here. Dont waste time trying to diagnose, it wont change a thing.

This is a perfectly accurate description of the problem. One has to type with the tip of their finger to reproduce it. I recommend to test this using the free Touch Screen Check app, here:

I took my iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB (with a price tag of 1,8291.95 € in Slovenia) to the Apple Premium Reseller today and the person at the store was very dismissive, denying any possibility that the issue could exist at all, not even looking at the phone, although I pointed out that the problem is quite widely reported on the Internet, citing this very Apple discussions forum. He said I can leave the phone there so the technician will run diagnostics. Finally I went to my mobile network operator where I actually bought the phone along with a subscription plan. They will send the phone to the before mentioned Apple Reseller and I will hopefully get a replacement. But I’m not very excited about this, because I suspect the chances the new phone (if they will replace it all all) having the exact same problem are quite high.

The problem is not some minor annoyance, it’s an actual deal breaker. Typing is so frustrating it’s barely usable.

I have owned iPhone 4, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 13 Pro Max 512GB and none of them exhibited such behaviour. But as it turns out, the problem seems to be dragging across many iPhone iterations, affecting an unknown percentage of devices. Your (supposed) problem has nothing to do with the topic here that discusses the problem of certain (mostly bottom/bottom-right) well defined areas of touchscreen that fail to respond to taps. The topic discussed here is not about the autocorrection (or any other) keyboard lags you might be experiencing.

A certain percentage of devices have areas of screen that fail to respond to touch, a defect which is 100% reproducible. So the problem is not restricted to keyboard or any other application, it’s a hardware problem of unresponsive touchscreen that can’t be resolved via any software means.

With all due respect, I believe it’s important to stick to the topic presented by the initial poster/customer.

I may have accidentally stumbled on a fix. Not sure because now I’m looking for lag even if there isn’t any.

but in my dictionary settings, I had both UK and US thesaurus and dictionaries turned on. I unchecked one and left just one active and that seems to have sped things up. At least my backspace and general touch response seems to be better. I don’t know if this is a “fix” fix but it seems to have made mine a little better.

Would love to know if there’s a foolproof fix though. Lag kills me.

I don’t know if this is a fix, but I was trying everything out of desperation and found one that seems to have worked for me. Check your dictionary settings and see how many languages you have turned on. I had both UK thesaurus and dictionary, as well as the US thesaurus and dictionary. I unchecked a couple and kept just the one variant of each and that seems to have worked for me. I don’t have any other devices with the same issue around me to double check. But I don’t know. May be worth a try. Haven’t found anything else that’s a guaranteed solution.

As I have stated on another post discussing this same issue, sadly, I'm one of those who were affected by this bug/?hardware issue. Got a new blue iPhone 15PM a couple of days ago which was shortly updated to iOS 17.1.1.

In my case, the affected area appears to be the bottom right part of the screen overlaying the N, M, and backspace buttons on the keyboard. Upon attempting to type, tapping these buttons does not seem to register properly, leading to frequent typos. This happens fairly frequently with the screen being responsive in between the instances this occurs.

I do not have a screen protector installed. Thinking this could be due to a bug in the keyboard software, I have tried switching between different keyboards including the native iOS keyboard, SwitchKey and Gboard with the issue being present regardless of which keyboard is being used. Restarting the phone does nothing.

Hoping this gets acknowledged and addressed soon. I'm considering returning the device and getting a replacement as a hardware issue hasn't been conclusively ruled out.

An important observation I’d like to make:

as I have already advised, please use the free Touch Check app, available on the App Store: (https://apps.apple.com/si/app/touchscreencheck/id1542546774) and verify that the following is true:

when tapping in the area that at random refuses to register taps (such as Space, Backspace, L and other affected keys), you should be able to reproduce this in Touch Check app

but when sliding with you finger over the affected screen areas, without lifting it, Touch Check is always correctly updating the X and Y coordinates

So it seems that only tapping, not sliding with one’s finger, is misbehaving. I’d guess that this is indicative of a software rather than a hardware issue.

I’d like to urge Apple to absolutely prioritise this problem, addressing it in the next iOS update, as it is hampering the most basic phone functionality and affects way too many iPhone users.
