Can't text Android phones after iOS 17.1.1 Update

I’ve verified that Text Message Forwarding and Send as SMS are turned on, tried turning on and off Airplane mode as suggested and powered on/off my iPhone and iPad. This isn’t a carrier issue, it began immediately after this i0s update. Not the first time this has happened with an update, so need a good solution, and perhaps more thorough testing before releasing updates, especially with recurring problems.

OK my problem was solved by Verizon. Turns out the update through the provisioning out of sink from the phone provider. All they had to do was connect me with level two support, they synchronized my provisioning, and Presto it was fixed.

iOS updates generally aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. Storge issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

I’m having the same issue. iPhone and SMS can send but can’t receive. iMessages work. This is iPhone 13 version 17.1.1 on Verizon. My friends iPhone 15 version 17.1.1 on ATT if at least getting failed message.

I've disabled iMessages and sms, rebooted phone, re enabled and still the same.

Group chats are broken if anyone is one Android. Again I can send but if anyone replies I don’t get it.

Apple fix this!

I did iOS 17 update on both iPhone and iPad. Iphone settings still show send as SMS and MMS Messaging, etc., options (on), however, iPad now does not have those options. Group chats sent to groups that have non iPhone users do not go thru on both iPad and iPhone. When I got new phone I had issues due to no SIM on phone and SIM on iPad so I tried those fixes (in addition to many more suggested) with no success.

Apple please fix!

Me too. I have upgraded my iPhone SE2020 and iPad Mini to iOS17.1.1 and MacBook Pro 16 to MacOS 14 Sonoma. Ever since upgrading to iOS 17, SMS/MMS is broken. I have verified all of the iMessage settings, turned airplane mode on/off and have rebooted all devices repeatedly. I do have text forwarding and no issues. Ok, the strange thing is that for my husband, who has an iPhone 13 Max Pro, iPad and same MacBook, all is working. Same for my daughter who has an even newer iPhone, iPad and MacBook. They all work, but I don’t. This is very frustrating and not the first time this has happened. I have contacts who are android users and travel abroad where the world just doesn’t live by iMessage. We also upgraded my son recently from his iPhone SE2020 to a iPhone 13 and now issues either. It sounds crazy, but could this be device dependent?

On a cruise ship presents a different unrelated situation, one I am well aware of. Avid cruiser, grand daughters have iPhones, daughter and android. Can readily test grand daughters at sea on ship wi-fi iMessage. You can't text an Android from ship on wi-fi! When you text Apple Apple you are sending it to through wi-fi to Apple servers which then send it through Apple servers to their iPhones. To text and Android phone you have to do it via SMS which require a phone service provider. YES you an do it at sea if ship has cellular at sea and you text through that. Problem is that costs you general .05 cents for every text received and .50 cents for every text sent. Photo's sent can cost $20 for each picture via cellular at sea. Sending pictures vis iPhone iMessage again wi-fi no cost.

So when I cruise I stay in touch via grand daughters and their iPhones.

When in most Caribbean ports ( Verizon anyway ) have Travel Pass turned on at via provider. This allows me to use iPhone in ports that have Travel Pass for a ONE day ( 24 hours ) charge of $10, phone, texts sending/receiving data. Check with your provider. Cellular at Sea charges 2.99 a minute for phone calls while at sea. Check with your ship what phone in cabin charges. Some charge 2.99 others only have satellite and charge fees like 8.99 a minutes with 3 minute minimums.

This is a situation that requires research with carrier BEFORE you sail.

Also can't solve the SMS problem with texts to and from Android, did the network reset, it seemed to work, but in fact it just did what the Airplane Mode On/Off approach does, which is temporarily reconnect to the network but then after a period of non-activity it stops allowing SMS again. I am assuming that Apple will "eventually" figure out what's causing this and fix it but they're not going to be in a big rush since Apple-to-Apple iMessaging still works and, of course, true to Apple's hyper-captive environment approach, that pretty much suits them until the pain gets too high for them. My green-to-red contacts happened when I got a new iPad Pro, which had iOS 17.2 installed. I've tried all the tricks listed in this post, but nothing is fixing the problem. UNACCEPTABLE! Anyone come up with something that hasn't been discussed yet. At my wit's end. Same thing happens on my iPhone 12 with the "new" update. This is exactly why I despise updates! $#@!

usually I don't even get a bounce back on texts. on calls we tested it while standing next to android user and phone doesn't ring.
