"Your credit card is about to expire" error every time I try to purchase an app in App Store

Whenever I try to make in app purchases I get an error pop up that says “Your credit card is about to expire” and that I need to sign in to update my information. Except my card doesn’t expire until 2027.

I’ve tried resetting my phone, I’ve tried signing out of my Apple ID and back in. I can’t delete and re-add my card because I get an error saying I can’t because I have active subscriptions on the card.

Funnily enough, I canceled my subscriptions on my card thinking I could cancel them, delete and re-add my info and then resubscribe, which I couldn’t do because I got the active subscriptions error again but when I resubmitted my canceled subscriptions they went through just fine.

Also I usually use Face ID to pay, but because of this error, I get asked into sign in to Apple ID instead which is unusual.

Any suggestions? This is so annoying

I’ve had this problem too - started to get emails in the middle of December saying that upcoming subscriptions were going to fail and I should update my payment details - but everything was correct so there was nothing to update. Then yesterday my iTunes Match did indeed fail to renew because the payment failed.

Contacted Apple Support and was fortunate enough to speak to someone who was aware of the cause of this problem. As I understand it, this is an Apple Pay issue where a person’s credit card is linked to Apple Pay. Believe it or not, Apple Pay is not using the credit card expiry date but has a blanket expiry date of December 2023, which is why payments are starting to fail for lots of people.

To fix it, I was told to do the following. Go to Settings->Apple Id->Payment and Shipping and remove the payment method linked to Apple Pay. Then add the card details back as a new payment method but DO NOT LINK it to Apple Pay. The card should then start working again.

I won’t get into the craziness of this or the fact that Apple appear to have sat on this problem since mid-December when they started sending out emails saying upcoming payments were going to fail…..

Hello, I had this similar issue where my card is not expired for several more years but it’s saying it is expired with the software update, and came here to share the solution that fixed the problem for me because the Payment team is not open over the weekend or Holiday either. I deleted my card from Wallet first.

Try going to Apple ID > Media & Purchases > View Account > Manage Payments > Edit > delete that card and re-enter it. I hope that helps!

I had this issue as well. Received a couple emails about it and ignored them, knowing my card didn’t expire until 2027. Finally decided to look into it tonight. (I used Apple Pay at a local store successfully this morning, too.)

When I looked into Settings > Apple ID (top button) > Payment & Shipping, it said my card had expired — which, of course, it hadn’t. I could not simply edit the expiration date of the card by going into the Edit menu, either.

Apple Support told me via text to delete and re-add it. I told them this wasn’t my problem so why should I have to do that? In the time it took them to reply, I googled it and found this hairy thread. I told the rep about it and they said “Apple has received reports of this issues [sic] and it is currently under review”:

In the meantime, I deleted and re-added within Settings without a hitch — and this was my only payment method and I have three active subscriptions:

I also re-linked my card to Apple Pay.

Doesn’t seem to be linked only to the expiration year 2027. Perhaps it’s US Bank cards? Visa? Cards with pictures of puppies on them?

I just downloaded a few apps from the App Store and have had no issues there; I’ll report back if I encounter another problem.

I was having trouble with App Store purchases, and couldn't update my card details, supposedly, because of Family Sharing. I couldn't remove my expired card, or re-add it. BUt after removing and adding it to Wallet on iPhone, I was able to then go into my Apple ID Payment details and, instead of updating or removing/re-adding, I linked it to my Apple Pay Wallet card, and then the problem went away. But not before I had canceled Family Sharing. I re-enabled Family Sharing, but now I worry that weird things will happen to my spouse's devices and apps.
