"Your credit card is about to expire" error every time I try to purchase an app in App Store

Whenever I try to make in app purchases I get an error pop up that says “Your credit card is about to expire” and that I need to sign in to update my information. Except my card doesn’t expire until 2027.

I’ve tried resetting my phone, I’ve tried signing out of my Apple ID and back in. I can’t delete and re-add my card because I get an error saying I can’t because I have active subscriptions on the card.

Funnily enough, I canceled my subscriptions on my card thinking I could cancel them, delete and re-add my info and then resubscribe, which I couldn’t do because I got the active subscriptions error again but when I resubmitted my canceled subscriptions they went through just fine.

Also I usually use Face ID to pay, but because of this error, I get asked into sign in to Apple ID instead which is unusual.

Any suggestions? This is so annoying

I’ve had this problem too - started to get emails in the middle of December saying that upcoming subscriptions were going to fail and I should update my payment details - but everything was correct so there was nothing to update. Then yesterday my iTunes Match did indeed fail to renew because the payment failed.

Contacted Apple Support and was fortunate enough to speak to someone who was aware of the cause of this problem. As I understand it, this is an Apple Pay issue where a person’s credit card is linked to Apple Pay. Believe it or not, Apple Pay is not using the credit card expiry date but has a blanket expiry date of December 2023, which is why payments are starting to fail for lots of people.

To fix it, I was told to do the following. Go to Settings->Apple Id->Payment and Shipping and remove the payment method linked to Apple Pay. Then add the card details back as a new payment method but DO NOT LINK it to Apple Pay. The card should then start working again.

I won’t get into the craziness of this or the fact that Apple appear to have sat on this problem since mid-December when they started sending out emails saying upcoming payments were going to fail…..

Somebody said to delete your credit card and put it back in. However, if you have any subscriptions, such as Netflix, or anything they will not let you delete the credit card. And if you try to add the same card as a second card, it says you already have that card added. I tried adding an additional credit card which was completely different and that was successful and then I just removed it and then it seemed to work but then the next day the error came back again.

Hmm… I’m wondering if they switched from storing credit card expiration dates in MM/YY format to MM/YYYY format. If they did this without padding the existing expiry years with a leading “20”, that would make a credit card that expires in 2026 appear to have expired in the year 26 (I.e. the past). By deleting your card info and re-entering it (which seems to be the solution to this problem), you are correcting the data error yourself.

There is a thread where people are removing their card from the Wallet app - as opposed to Settings - and then re-entering the information there, and then it is working. Worth a try. I did it two times and it did not work, but that might be a function of the phone I have vs. theirs. Probably worth trying for you. Hope it works!

Having exactly the same problem! Had no issues yesterday but today getting error “your card is about to expire “ when it does not until 2027 and it won’t let me delete and enter again and won’t let me pay (even though it only says “about “ to expire.

seeing how many others are having issues with the same thing yesterday/today it looks like an Apple Pay issue rather than an “us” issue.

Spoke with Apple and I was to.d it was an Apple system error at end of 2023. Strangely, all 2024 transactions were going thru so I was concerned that expired card message was a hoax. But apparently not. Despite being a system wide error, Apple support said the no general message was sent out to notify ApplePay users. As I said, my bank was allowing transactions despite Apple’s internal expiration notice to me. Others have stated below how to fix.
