"Your credit card is about to expire" error every time I try to purchase an app in App Store

Whenever I try to make in app purchases I get an error pop up that says “Your credit card is about to expire” and that I need to sign in to update my information. Except my card doesn’t expire until 2027.

I’ve tried resetting my phone, I’ve tried signing out of my Apple ID and back in. I can’t delete and re-add my card because I get an error saying I can’t because I have active subscriptions on the card.

Funnily enough, I canceled my subscriptions on my card thinking I could cancel them, delete and re-add my info and then resubscribe, which I couldn’t do because I got the active subscriptions error again but when I resubmitted my canceled subscriptions they went through just fine.

Also I usually use Face ID to pay, but because of this error, I get asked into sign in to Apple ID instead which is unusual.

Any suggestions? This is so annoying

I’ve had this problem too - started to get emails in the middle of December saying that upcoming subscriptions were going to fail and I should update my payment details - but everything was correct so there was nothing to update. Then yesterday my iTunes Match did indeed fail to renew because the payment failed.

Contacted Apple Support and was fortunate enough to speak to someone who was aware of the cause of this problem. As I understand it, this is an Apple Pay issue where a person’s credit card is linked to Apple Pay. Believe it or not, Apple Pay is not using the credit card expiry date but has a blanket expiry date of December 2023, which is why payments are starting to fail for lots of people.

To fix it, I was told to do the following. Go to Settings->Apple Id->Payment and Shipping and remove the payment method linked to Apple Pay. Then add the card details back as a new payment method but DO NOT LINK it to Apple Pay. The card should then start working again.

I won’t get into the craziness of this or the fact that Apple appear to have sat on this problem since mid-December when they started sending out emails saying upcoming payments were going to fail…..

Same issue. Notably (and I don't believe this has been mentioned yet), it gives me the same error no matter what credit card I choose. So it clearly has nothing to do with any particular card; it's Apple.

Haven't had a chance to try anything on a computer yet, but I'll try that later if I get around to it.

I'm sure hundreds of merchants are losing money because Apple isn't addressing this. 🤷‍♂️

This is the exact thing happening to me today. I also called Apple and the customer service person mentioned something about users entering incorrect card expiration dates on their cards which doesn’t make any sense because I’ve been using my card for a couple of years now and it doesn’t expire till 2026. But I submitted a different card, deleted my original card and re-entered it just to be sure about the expiration date and it’s still happening.

There is DEFINITELY something wrong… I tried removing my card in the payment portion in settings. It said I needed at least one form of payment on file. So I tried adding a card with expiration 2/25 and it said I can’t add a card whose expiration date is in the past (“credit card expiration year must be between 2023 and 2043”). So there’s something wrong with the date that Apple’s systems are set to.

Wow so got the email saying my card is expired, it hasn’t, and have been trying to buy some music - read all the comments and just removed the “expired” card from Apple Pay went back on to iTunes and it finally worked without sending me to setting to sign in etc - thank you, I will now add the card back to Apple Pay or maybe a different card just in case

This actually worked! Thanks for the help. Remove from wallet in Setting, Apple ID, Payment and Shipping. It will say your card is expired because all Apple Pay accounts expired the end of December 2023. I wish Apple would’ve been more forthcoming on this. I seriously considered cancelling all my subscriptions after this debacle.

(2/2) In the meantime, I deleted and re-added within Settings without a hitch — and this was my only payment method and I have three active Subscriptions:

I also re-linked my card to Apple Pay.

Doesn’t seem to be linked only to the expiration year 2027. Perhaps it’s US Bank cards? Visa? Cards with pictures of puppies on them?

I just downloaded a few apps from the App Store and have had no issues there; I’ll report back if I encounter another problem.

This. Just got off phone w/ Apple Support after close to 30 min and trying to deal with this on my own after coming home fm work to a legit Apple email saying my AppleTV sub could not be charged.. Card not expired, no issue with having the funds. Took alot of fooling around and multiple efforts with the competent Support person, but finally got it resolved. She told me it was 100% an Apple issue, a bit concerning yeesh
