Apple Music skipping

I use my iPhone a lot for music playback. After upgrading to 11.3, I've started to have problems with glitching and skipping while listening to music. I'm using a iPhone 6S with a new battery installed by Apple a few weeks ago. Playback problems occur when using wired headphones (3.5 analog), the iPhone speaker and also JBL Clip 2 bluetooth speaker. All of the songs I've had skipping problems were downloaded to the phone. I've also had a problem with playing Beats1 on-demand shows. Anyone else having issues?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that after updating to iOS 11.3, you started having issues with music playback, getting "glitching and skipping" when listening on the internal speaker, wired headphones and a Bluetooth speaker. I have several things we can try to resolve the issue, try each of these and test after each suggestion.

First, force quit Music and Restart iPhone. These articles will walk you through these steps if you need a reminder.

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you are still having the same issue after force quitting Music and restarting the phone, delete and reinstall Music app. This article covers that process:

Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 11 device or Apple Watch

And finally, if you are still having the issue, please remove one of the songs that you are having an issue with and then redownload it. Then test to see if you are still having an issue with the playback.

I’ve been suffering with exactly this problem on my iPhone 6s since this spring.

Upgrading to iOS 12 has completely fixed the problem, thankfully.

I see this pattern too. About 15 sec after pressing PLAY, the playback will stop for 10sec and then resume. Then it will periodically experience episodes of garbled sound. Pausing and pressing PLAY again sometimes results in TWO simultaneous streams of the same playback slightly offset in time. Pausing and pressing PLAY a few times generally clears the problem; but also just tolerating it for a while works too -- it eventually goes away. I experience this in headphones (two different sets) and using the phone's own speaker. I have not noticed this with bluetooth playback yet.

Update: I have found a way to clear the problem when it occurs (at least when listening through headphones). When the problem begins, I press the center button on my headset controls and wait for 5-10 seconds until I hard the "click" that (I assume) means the playback process has completely shut down. If I then press center button again, the problem is solved.

Hi everyone,

I have managed to fix this issue (at least for now...).

To fix this I simply just deleted the music app from my phone and re-installed it. I only did this yesterday but so far it seems to be okay! 🙂

I think I found a solution... at least it's working so far for me... I did 2 things but pretty sure 1 was the answer... I went into Bluetooth devices and set "forget this device" to all other devices except the receiver I was connected to... haven't reconnected to any other device yet, but so far no constant audio drops, skips, or distorted audio... the other thing I did was turn off location but don't think that was the prob... haven't turned it back on cuz I'm enjoying listening to my music without having to constantly restart Bluetooth lol

I'm on m 4th day and the restore is working great. No skips or garbling. Added bonus, my 6s is fast again. Now, if they can just fix the battery..........😉

I turned off “lock sound” and that seems to have fixed for me. Very weird issue.

Just updated to 11.4 today. Finally the problem is solved for me. No jittering any more. I have waiting this for so long Apple, come on.

My iPhone 6s continues to have the stuttering problem after the 11.3.1 upgrade.

Everyone in this thread should report feedback to Apple about this issue, and refer to this thread. Apple doesn’t monitor these threads, so only writing about this issue here won’t help. Also, don’t expect a reply from Apple. Even with those caveats, Apple does pay attention to issues submitted via the feedback form.

Update: I find that the problem can re-appear if I interact with the lock screen. Also if I switch from audio book to podcast app. It seems that anything that restarts the playback system can trigger the problem. But the maneuver above (pause and wait 10 seconds) always clears the problem for me.

To all that advise 11.4 did not resolve, please enroll in the beta program and install latest--its not 11.4 that addresses the issue, but rather 11.4 beta 5. I've been issue-free since its release.

I went ahead and did a full reset and restore of my iPhone when 10.4 was released. The problems are still there. My distorted audio problem now seems to only happen now when I'm using CarPlay. The 1 second skip still happens and seems to be related to the auto-locking of the phone. Manually locking the phone prevents the skipping as others have noted. After the backup and restore I of course had to download all of my music again so this does not seem to be related to the music files being corrupted.

I'm currently running the 10.4.1 beta.

Hi, I’ve had the same issues. Just went through this whole process to reinstall my phone and it worked. Last night there was an iOS update and it screwed up my phone again. Music and now my voicemail seems off. Starts to play then fades off to a stop. Doesn’t even show the copy script anymore.

I have contacted apple chat and will also be having a phone call tonight. I asked the Apple chat employee if there was a way to forward the information I provided to other parties. They mentioned “You can go to

apple.com/feedback, and that is checked daily by our engineers.” Think this is the another option people should do. Fill out the feedback form with issues and also call or write to apple chat.
