Apple Music skipping

I use my iPhone a lot for music playback. After upgrading to 11.3, I've started to have problems with glitching and skipping while listening to music. I'm using a iPhone 6S with a new battery installed by Apple a few weeks ago. Playback problems occur when using wired headphones (3.5 analog), the iPhone speaker and also JBL Clip 2 bluetooth speaker. All of the songs I've had skipping problems were downloaded to the phone. I've also had a problem with playing Beats1 on-demand shows. Anyone else having issues?

Hello leedos,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that after updating to iOS 11.3, you started having issues with music playback, getting "glitching and skipping" when listening on the internal speaker, wired headphones and a Bluetooth speaker. I have several things we can try to resolve the issue, try each of these and test after each suggestion.

First, force quit Music and Restart iPhone. These articles will walk you through these steps if you need a reminder.

How to force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you are still having the same issue after force quitting Music and restarting the phone, delete and reinstall Music app. This article covers that process:

Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 11 device or Apple Watch

And finally, if you are still having the issue, please remove one of the songs that you are having an issue with and then redownload it. Then test to see if you are still having an issue with the playback.

Delete songs and videos from your iCloud Music Library

Best regards.

Update:

I have contacted Apple support regarding this issue, of which I’ve asked for technical assistance via email but they refused multiple times. Additionally I have also asked for my money back on Apple Music but the iOS Senior advisor completely ignored this request and didn’t even respond.

They have said I am only allowed to speak to them via phone, which I’m planning on doing this week. However this issue is now effecting audio on phone calls too do not how that’ll go!

I am due an upgrade in September and for the first time in 6 years I am seriously contemplating moving to Android. It’s beyond a joke that an IPhone cannot make phone calls and can’t play music! (The two things you’d expect at a minimum)

I’ll post an update after my phone call with them.

Yes I am getting this problem too - starting about the beginning of July. It affects both an iPhone 5s and an iPad mini 3. It affects both Podcasts and Music. I notice it when listening on headphones. The first sign is that the audio stream cuts out for a few seconds and then appears to continue OK - but after that there is a periodic 'stuttering' - it sounds like a CD player trying to play a CD with a serious scratch. Killing and restarting the app affected doesn't help. I will try some of the cures described by others.

However this is a real black mark against Apple - not what you want from what is supposed to be a quality product.

Well what can I say , I thought that's what you did with windows devices , when it does not work turn it off and turn it on again lol - Microsoft strapline never laughed so much ,

I should not laugh I am having the same issue on my ipad only on certain songs which I deleted of both my ipad and mac , put the music back on plays ok on my mac (Still on mountain lion thank God) so why is it done everything apple say but still nothing -

slowly using my PC more and more moving away from Apple the best way forward at the moment - let the bosses know there are unhappy people , people who buy their product and just want it to work - you can see just buy this page but I doubt if anyone will tell them to scared to say your product is rubbish and no wonder others are catching up and overtaking, happy to discuss if they got the time to spare.

Lots of feedback since I last wrote on here, none of it from Apple, none of it presenting a resolution.

What I find annoying is this assertion that deleting the apple music app and downloading your music again will restore the issue. It does not. Here are some key facts about the sound issues

  1. Its not just music apps, also podcasts are affected
  2. sound cut off and distortion/skipping is random
  3. it typically effects the first track played
  4. it appears to effect downloaded music only (i am testing this theory a lot, see below)

Because Apple has made no effort to respond to this issue, I have cancelled my apple music subscription.

I have had an iPhone since the first Apple Phone; today I have an iPhone7; it is due for upgrade next year and I buy my phones, so... I will not be upgrading to a new iPhoneX+ or whatever they call it. Samsung will be my choice. This is sad, because as I said, I have been a supporter of Apple for many years. I believed in their products and commitment to customer service and it is the later part that has gone wrong.

I am a software tester, I know stuff can go wrong, but this is madness. There are hundreds of posts, describing skipping, distortion, sound loss and there is no sign that Apple even accepts that this is occurring.

I am wondering if this is more hardware than software and that is the reason why Apple are not keen to accept that there is an issue?

Anyway, I have now started a #badApple tag on Twitter and I will be banging on about this in a more public arena until its fixed or I move to Samsung. I wonder which will come first?

So like you said did some feedback but also did everything Apple said I have done the following deleted all my music i reset my phone as new and put my music back on it did not make any difference,, however borrowed my daughters Samsung and my music works a treat , I am beginning to think this is a hardware issue hence why Apple won’t give a working answer , why the cloak and dagger tell us it’s not working and we are working on it , I can handle this , we are adults and can handle it ..

I think the problem is that Apple just ***** at Bluetooth connections.

I’ve been watching the Bluetooth symbol turning on anf off while the sound is garbled. It is quickly connecting and disconnect Bluetooth very quickly.

Seems to go part and parcel with connecting any Bluetooth device to the iPhone. Even making a connection with the receiving device is right next to the iPhone can take several minutes.

Is it a design failure or software failure. ****, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bluetooth worked perfectly if you bought their Beats Bluetooth headphones. I just don’t trust them.

Me too. Random iTune tracks are skipped on my iphone 8, often mid way through a track. After the last upgrade I noticed several tracks are no longer on my hard drive: a blue cloud icon appears next them. To check I select Get Info by right clicking my mouse. I see the tracks are stored in icloud when I select File. Numerous calls to Apple support and two case numbers have not only failed to solve the problem but support personnel either do not know why it is happening or it is Apple company policy not to explain why tracks are being taken from one’s hard drive to the cloud.

Has anyone else experienced this?

What a relief to read this post. I thought it was a hardware problem on my iPhone 6.

It is REALLY annoying. They obviously didn’t test the update before it was released. I’ve noticed that Audible the audiobook app works fine, but any music skips or cuts out and yes the lock screen seems to have an effect. I tried rebooting the phone and it seems to help for a short while before starting all over again. Everything is Apple in our house and I’m now thinking how to move to a different platform where they care about their loyal customers. Shame on you Apple! Steve Jobs would turn in his grave with embarrassment!
