Bluetooth Voice Becomes REALLY Slow

At least once a day on conference calls via bluetooth headsets (several types - all equal) the voice I hear is slowed down (sounds very deep and is mostly unintelligible).

To fix, I switch to iPhone or Speaker and back or the call simply drops.

The person I am speaking to can hear that my voice has slowed down. (Sounds like when the voice of an informant is masked on tv.)

Other times I will lose all sound coming out of the call, however the call continues. Redialing into the call does not restore the sound. Only way to fix seems to be a hard reboot of the phone.

I have an iPhone 7+ iOS 11.3

I have had the same problem since sometime in the spring of 2018. I have been to the Apple store twice, both times for about 3 hours. They have worked dutifully to help but have been unsuccessful. The first visit they tested everything. The microphone and speakers and ran a diagnostic and upgraded my carrier settings with Verizon and changed my SIM card. Didn’t help. The second visit they gave me a new phone and updated everything again and still no improvement. I put in a ticket with Verizon and they sent me a canned video telling me I was in a bad service area and to use WiFi Caliing - which is ridiculous because I’m in Pittsburgh traveling along a major interstate highway with good coverage where I have used a call phone for the past 10 years with no problems. Obviously I’m not the only person with this problem. I have discovered that when I switch my call to privacy mode instead of being on BT or Speaker mode the issue goes away. I thought this was perhaps the BT in my Ford F-150 but it happens on speaker phone mode equally with BT so I don’t believe it is the vehicle software either. Exceptionally frustrating. May give up on iPhone and switch to an Android over this after being an iPhone user for 10 years.

I have had the same problem for months. I use my phone for business, and it is embarrassing. Apple had me do a reset, and keep apps off the phone. Same problem. Reload apps, same problem. I probably spent 10-14 hours of wasted time with Verizon and Apple to try to fix this. Ended up getting a new Apple phone, same problem. I recently read on one of the forums that it is a Bluetooth issue. I shut off the Bluetooth, and have not had the problem since. While this is not a solution to the problem, it allows me to continue to do business until they solve the problem. I will not hold my breath, and might end up going to Android.

Did any of you get resolution on this? I am having the hardest time getting Apple to agree that there is a bug in the 11+ software. This appears to have started happening after 11.3 came out. It only affects bluetooth connected devices and Apple really isn't taking ownership of the issue. I was told today that regardless if there are posts on the discussions, unless people actually go into the store to report it, there is no record of it and the engineering team will never address it.

SO IF YOU HAVE THIS ISSUE, GO TO THE STORE TO REPORT IT, or CALL APPLE SUPPORT to make sure a trouble ticket is logged.

This is getting ridiculous

This has been happening to me for the last 6 months to a year on my iPhone 7 (currently running iOS 11.4) as well. I see there are a few other threads on Apple Discussions about the same issue, and it seems to have been going on for a couple of years now. Kinda nice knowing that I'm not alone in having the problem, but it doesn't help really! Lots of people having the problem, but no solutions 😕

I ended up completely restoring my phone to factory settings and setting it up again from scratch. And I mean totally from scratch, not restoring a backup from iTunes / iCloud. Took ages. And... it didn't work! I still have the problem and it happens pretty much every day to me as well.

I have this exact same issue on iPhone 7plus. Version 11.4 on Verizon 32.0. It’s been happening for about 3-5 months. I just bought a Bose QC35 ll hoping it was my cheap James headset. It wasn’t. The voice drops out for a second or two during the call and when it comes back they sound really deep and slow. It corrects itself after a couple of seconds. If I’m talking, the other callers always say I sound like a chipmunk or I’m talking super fast.

Happens sometimes once per call or as much as 3 times during a 60 minute call. Work phone is a Samsung Galaxy 8 plus. Same headsets, same carrier (Verizon) are used with no issue.

Let’s go Apple, please fix phone.

Hello all, I have some further findings.

I had the issue with my iPhone 7 on 11.4.

I managed to get my hands on a new iPhone X and set up from scratch without restore. No issues in 2 weeks with lots of calling on AirPods and car BT.

I am now switching back to my 7. I will report back to let you know if the issue returns now that I am back on my 7.

You're welcome Rajeev. As you say, the total reset was a long process to go through, but I'd exhausted other options, like resetting the headset to factory defaults and re-pairing with the phone, doing a "Reset Network Settings" on the phone, etc. I really expected a complete setup-from-scratch to work, so was rather surprised when it didn't!

One other interesting thing that might be relevant: I never ever have this problem when using the same phone via Bluetooth in my car. It's 100% always fine. So I'm wondering if this problem is something that only rears its head with certain peripherals. Perhaps there are different dialects/versions of the Bluetooth protocol, some of which the iPhone "speaks" perfectly, and one or more others that are implemented incorrectly either in hardware or (hopefully!) software. It does seem to be a problem with the iPhone though, as Google searches on the subject always seem to turn up problems with iPhone users, and not with users of other types of phones.

Haha, you're telling me! :-)

I bought the Airpods December 2017 and havent had problems at all until I installed iOS 11.4. Right with this update sh*t started to hit the fan. Funny to hear from different websites/boards that the issue seems to appear on older iOS versions AND other Bluetooth devices, also.

Currently I have no hope for this problem being fixed by a software change.

Best

Daniel
