Iphone 11 Pro & Carplay

I just upgraded from an Iphone X to Iphone 11 Pro. IOS 13.0 and now my Carplay sounds like an old Vinyl record with a scratch. playing music from the Phone skips randomly 5-15 seconds then skips again. I've reset the phone, I've erased the phone and just put 1 album on it, no luck. , updated to 13.1 and no change it still skips. My old Iphone X running 13.1 works perfectly. It's so bad I listen to XM now. and don't use my carplay to listen to music. My vehicle is a 2019 Mini Cooper JCW, I've had the dealership reset the ECU, any other ideas would be wonderful....

I have had almost the exact issue that many of you have been describing. I have a Mini Cooper 2019, and I am using Apple CarPlay. It worked perfectly fine with my iPhone X, and I recently upgraded to the iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 13.1.3. Whenever I would listen to music, every ten seconds or so the sound would cut out or stutter, making it basically unusable. Thanks to a great support call with an Apple engineer, I am happy to report that the issue is completely resolved.

Here are the things I initially tried to resolve the issue, based on suggestions from Apple Support:

  1. Reset All Settings (this did not help).
  2. Erase All Content and Settings, and restore iPhone from iCloud backup (this did not help).

Here are the steps that did resolve the issue:

  1. Connected my iPhone to my Windows 10 computer running iTunes.
  2. From iTunes, I clicked on the iPhone button, and in the top panel, I selected the Restore iPhone button. I restored the iPhone back to factory settings. As explained to me by the Apple engineer, this is not the same as Erasing All Content and Settings on the phone itself. Restoring the iPhone in this way completely wipes out the contents of the phone and performs a clean install of the operating system.
  3. Once the iPhone was finished restoring back to factory settings, I initially did not restore my iCloud backup. Instead, I set it up as a new phone.
  4. I removed the existing iPhone profile from my Mini Cooper, and then re-paired my car with CarPlay on my phone.
  5. Now the moment of truth -- I tested playing music from my iPhone through CarPlay, and sure enough, no dropouts or stutter. The music played flawlessly!
  6. I then decided to try restoring my iCloud backup to see if I could get all of my settings and apps back on my phone without reintroducing the problem. I did so by first running Erase All Content and Settings, and I then restored my latest iCloud backup.
  7. Once I completed the iCloud restore, I then went out to my Mini Cooper and deleted the existing iPhone profile from the car.
  8. I re-paired the iPhone with CarPlay, and then proceeded to play my music. The music played perfectly -- problem resolved!

I hope that these steps will work for all of you that are having this issue. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

I had another call today with my Apple senior support engineer, and I was told for the first time that this issue has been reported by others and is a known issue that is being worked on by Apple. Previously, no one from Apple had acknowledged this to me or anyone else on this thread. That is very good news, and hopefully will lead to a fix in the near future. I will keep you posted with any new information.

With the 11 Pro Max and 2019 Cooper S, and 13.3.1, I've found my issues to mostly be resolved as well. Before I had to leave my phone behind the cupholder and still had occasional dropouts. Now I am able to keep my phone in my left pocket and get very few hiccups. I have had a few when Spotify switches songs, but no cutouts during tracks or during audio books. I didn't change any settings after upgrading to the latest iOS beta.

Exactly... It wasn't until the 4th or 5th comment by someone else after the initial post that Wireless was even mentioned. This thread started in September, right around when the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max was released. The common denominator here is the phone and/or iOS 13, NOT Wireless specifically. And the reason there's so much focus on the Mini Cars here is that that's what was reported in (I think?) 9to5Mac or whomever it was.. Because the initial poster here noted that was their hardware. And at the time we were still on page 1 (now we're son page 18!).

The CarPlay screen works in that you provide access to your Lock Screen (over USB or WiFi/BlueTooth) and the Stereo screen is activated yadda yadda yadda... From all of my troubleshooting, the problem seems to be that THAT connection drops off over X amount of time. From my experience, it's been roughly 2-3 minutes. And again, as I posted earlier, I'm also seeing disconnects with data transfer while connected to my MacBook Pro after the same amount of time. In both cases with my Car and my MBP, the Phone continues to get a charge, but nothing is transferred thru the cable. I've tried new cables, switching 'em around (like that should matter with a Lightning Cable), I've even checked that the option to allow access to USB Accessories when locked is enabled.

Sounds like the common denominator is the MINI. Like I said earlier, I went to the dealership and had them flash the ECU. That didn't help. I was just informed that my 19 mini has a Recall, They need to flash/ update something. I'll go back to have that done, and see if anything changes. I also went to the Apple store, since the phone is only 6 days old, they wanted to swap out the hardware, (but they didn't have my phone instock to swap...) so I'll go back next week to swap out the phone... They think it's a bluetooth issue... I'll keep updating ...

Ok, another update, I've updated to the 13.1.2 (which specifically said there was a carplay fix) And after getting excited that this might be the fix.... Nope... still skips, and drops calls., I then went to the apple store, had them replace my hardware. Nope... still skips, took my mini to the dealership for a recall (ECU software) I had them flash the ECU. Nope... still skips. lastly after talking to several Mini Employees. they all have 19 mini's and they all skip..... So now I sit and listen to XM, and wait for BMW to get an upgrade rolling. Contact your dealership and complain, the more complaints the quicker (hopefully) they will do an update..

Hi All,

I have been having the same issue with my 2019 BMW X1. I ran through the same steps that you did in which you restored your phone and basically made it a new phone and an empty shell, and still nothing. I have also updated my firmware in the car to see if anything from that would have worked and no such luck. I have connected an iPhone X running iOS 13 and everything runs smoothly. I also went back to the apple store and exchanged my iPhone 11 Pro Max with another iPhone 11 Pro Max and still no luck. I am getting skipping of music every few seconds and if I try to make a call it goes from CarPlay to my phone. At this point, I am beginning to think that the issue is with BMWs firmware and the new system. I will be calling BMW tomorrow to see if they have any updates.

Same problem, I just upgraded from an iPhone Xs in a Mini Cooper 2019 to an iPhone 11 Pro in the same car. With the Xs no issues at all but with the 11, I'm having the same symptoms described in this thread. I have repaired phone and car several times, reseted all phone settings and at the end, I got the same results. Last night I went to my local Apple Store and they told me I need to contact BMW to see if they have a solution otherwise I will need to wait for an OS patch.

All this happening in Mexico City.

Very frustrating situation for such an expensive device!!!

Same issue same frustration. Thought it was the phone and replaced the phone. Also, problem happens regardless of plugged in or Bluetooth.

I reached out to mini manufacturer as well and pushed the local dealership. Since Im one of 2 with the issue, it’s not really a problem but my problem. I would reach out to corporate mini.

my son has a Volvo same phone no issues. It’s something mini/bmw engineers needs to address with apple.

It has nothing to do with wireless or Bluetooth. I have turned off all wireless signals, downloaded all music locally, and connected wired and I still get this error. I have tried multiple cars, wiped the device and set as new, and even had the device replaced at Apple.

I still have the same issue. My wife has no issue on her XS, but I’ve seen reports of older models having the issue as well so it seems like a software bug.
