Iphone 11 Pro & Carplay

I just upgraded from an Iphone X to Iphone 11 Pro. IOS 13.0 and now my Carplay sounds like an old Vinyl record with a scratch. playing music from the Phone skips randomly 5-15 seconds then skips again. I've reset the phone, I've erased the phone and just put 1 album on it, no luck. , updated to 13.1 and no change it still skips. My old Iphone X running 13.1 works perfectly. It's so bad I listen to XM now. and don't use my carplay to listen to music. My vehicle is a 2019 Mini Cooper JCW, I've had the dealership reset the ECU, any other ideas would be wonderful....

I have had almost the exact issue that many of you have been describing. I have a Mini Cooper 2019, and I am using Apple CarPlay. It worked perfectly fine with my iPhone X, and I recently upgraded to the iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 13.1.3. Whenever I would listen to music, every ten seconds or so the sound would cut out or stutter, making it basically unusable. Thanks to a great support call with an Apple engineer, I am happy to report that the issue is completely resolved.

Here are the things I initially tried to resolve the issue, based on suggestions from Apple Support:

  1. Reset All Settings (this did not help).
  2. Erase All Content and Settings, and restore iPhone from iCloud backup (this did not help).

Here are the steps that did resolve the issue:

  1. Connected my iPhone to my Windows 10 computer running iTunes.
  2. From iTunes, I clicked on the iPhone button, and in the top panel, I selected the Restore iPhone button. I restored the iPhone back to factory settings. As explained to me by the Apple engineer, this is not the same as Erasing All Content and Settings on the phone itself. Restoring the iPhone in this way completely wipes out the contents of the phone and performs a clean install of the operating system.
  3. Once the iPhone was finished restoring back to factory settings, I initially did not restore my iCloud backup. Instead, I set it up as a new phone.
  4. I removed the existing iPhone profile from my Mini Cooper, and then re-paired my car with CarPlay on my phone.
  5. Now the moment of truth -- I tested playing music from my iPhone through CarPlay, and sure enough, no dropouts or stutter. The music played flawlessly!
  6. I then decided to try restoring my iCloud backup to see if I could get all of my settings and apps back on my phone without reintroducing the problem. I did so by first running Erase All Content and Settings, and I then restored my latest iCloud backup.
  7. Once I completed the iCloud restore, I then went out to my Mini Cooper and deleted the existing iPhone profile from the car.
  8. I re-paired the iPhone with CarPlay, and then proceeded to play my music. The music played perfectly -- problem resolved!

I hope that these steps will work for all of you that are having this issue. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

I also purchased a cup holder mount for the iPhone 11 Pro, and I am connecting to my Mini Cooper 2019 using the USB port. Perfect sound. It is very frustrating that so many people are having this problem and it is taking so long to resolve. I have an open ticket with Apple, and engineering is analyzing the data they received from my phone. I will keep you all posted.

I think the majority of issues seems to be wireless CarPlay but interesting how it’s also impacting wired users. I’d guess that the actual data at the physical level can’t be the issue as it’s occurring in both wired and wireless instances. Has to be higher up the stack, more towards application or session layers.

Its a fairly recent discovery so saying that Apple had shafted its customers is a touch alarmist. They’re usually working across hundreds of bugs that have higher priory than this. Has anyone reported an actual bug https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/

This is where issues get identified. I’ll do it soon and report back

I reported this issue to Apple months ago. After being given the run-around and being told that nobody else had reported an issue, I finally spoke to a representative who admitted that the iPhone 11 was having lots of problems with bluetooth, that they were aware of the CarPlay issue, and that it was being looked into. They arranged to take analytics from my phone, which they did, and they told me that would be my point person and that they would keep me updated. I've heard nothing from them, and they don't return my emails.

Just wondering if anyone has reported the issue to the any of the heavily-trafficked Apple blogs, might get more attention if it gets some coverage in social media. In the past, I have seen iPhone issues reported in one or more of the following blogs.

Mac Rumors https://www.macrumors.com/share.php

Apple Insider https://appleinsider.com/submit_story/

9to5Mac https://9to5mac.com/contact/

The more of us that submit our comments there, the more it might get some attention. And reference this this thread so the editors of those blogs can see how widespread the problem is. At the very least, I would like to see Apple make some statement about it.

I have been having the same issue as well, and have been trying to isolate the issue with an Apple support case office. The Apple support case officer has been working with one of their engineering teams in Singapore to assist as well. Apple have been really helpful in trying to isolate this so I thought I'd go through the issues that I reported, and what we've been trying to do to mitigate them.

TLDR; We haven't solved it yet, but we're on the phone every day or two to try and capture crash logs that are causing the issue, and trying new recommendations from the software engineering team. As for BMW (Australia), they haven't been able to help or be willing to try and escalate the issue to their software dev team for further investigation.

These are the issues I've had with an iPhone 11 Pro, iOS 13.3, and a Mini:

CarPlay not starting up when the car is turned on

This seems to be recreated most reliably when the car is connected to another known network (e.g. My home network or work wifi network).

Though, this weekend, there was once instance where I saw it when there weren't any known Wifi networks around. When stationary in the carpark, I've gone into settings to see that the phone's Wifi settings show that it has connected to the car's Wifi network (Mini), but I need to navigate through the car's entertainment unit to manually force a connection to the device to start CarPlay.

Music stuttering issue

This has been well documented in the thread. I've tested this with music and podcasts that were stored locally as well as ones that had to be streamed and haven't noticed any difference.

I only have seen this while driving, but when the music stutters, there is a "spinning wheel" in the top right hand of the music screen. This is why I thought it might only be an issue with music that is being streamed directly from the internet.

One thing I have noticed though is that this issue happens far worse while I'm driving in areas with a "known" network (e.g. Driving past a university with eduroam makes the music stream far worse than just the occasional stutter.

Phone call causing the entire entertainment system

I've noticed that when I've been on a phone call and left a Wifi network (e.g. leaving work), CarPlay crashes (laggy UI followed by a black screen), and then the entire entertainment system crashes. The entertainment system reboots with the Mini logo, and then CarPlay restarts.

What we have tried...

  • Forgetting the car on the iPhone, and deleting the phone from the car
  • Renaming the iPhone 11 Pro
  • Forgetting the two main Wifi networks off my phone
  • Testing with music/podcasts stored locally and streamed off the internet (no difference)
  • Turning off "Ask to Join Networks" and "Auto Join Hotspot" (Settings >Wifi)
  • Turning off "Screen time" (Settings > Screen time)
  • Collecting syslog files where I've recreated the crash multiple times for the team to analyse
  • Ensuring the car has the latest entertainment system firmware
  • Resetting the car's entertainment system firmware

What about BMW?

I have suspected that this is mainly an iOS/iPhone hardware issue, but also suspect that there are issues with BMW's OS firmware that need to be resolved (e.g. additional error handling causing the entire car OS to crash). I've tried reporting the issue to BMW with the hope that this could be potentially reported, and hoping that I could send crash logs to the development team..

The BMW dealerships referred me to BMW head office Australia, head office referred me to the dealerships, the dealership referred me to head office, and now I've been referred back to the dealerships. The dealerships have verbally said, "There is an issue, but BMW Australia head office have not acknowledged it so we can't do anything". They have offered to install the latest firmware in the car, but we've confirmed that this has already been done.

We may have different bugs b/c mine only happens w/ wireless CarPlay on two iPhone 11 Pros's (never w/ iPhone XS). This includes a brand new warranty replacement iPhone 11Pro with almost nothing loaded on it. It's not happening when I connect it wired to a Subaru. One thing we have in common is that this is extremely annoying. I only get cars w/ CarPlay... now it's useless.

iPhone 11 Pro and Mini Cooper S hot Chili 2019.

Hi! I turned off the WiFi location and improved considerably. But still not working properly.

Last week my car received a firmware update and also helped, but the problem is not solved.

Delays the initial connection, and still skip music 10/20% of the time.

I still believe that is a hardware issue, but hoping is software and gets solved soon. 🤞🏻
