iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

My family doesn’t have any issues with the power adapters when connected to their phones and they’re new.

I am using the same adapters and phone is not charging.

I just contacted Apple Support and they said they will send a new adapter.

I asked if the made any modifications to the adapter’s specs to meet the IOS14.2 update, but the adapters are the same.

So, I’ll just wait when it comes and I can test it.

So, 2 days ago I upgraded to 14.2 from 14.1 after being browbeaten into updating by the update-bot. My phone was old (6s plus), but the battery had been replaced and was still at 96% efficiency. A little other history on this phone, was it was getting rather finicky with charging for a few months. The cable had to be plugged just so. The cable had to be a relatively good condition (Apple or 3rd party). I was waiting for the 12s to be released before I upgraded, but the failure to charge caught me off guard and I needed a solution ASAP.

I made an appointment with the Apple "Genius's" today. After their 10 minute diagnostic, they came back and said the phone needs to be replaced. I had assumed it was just the lightning port was worn and needed replacing. I read on this forum that someone had this done for 40 dollars and all was well.

When I asked why can't it be fixed, they said that, and I quote "It's not drawing enough power and we recommend replacing the phone".

Not drawing enough power, what does that even mean??? It was drawing enough power to satisfy 14.1.

Furthermore, they tell me that they cannot replace the lightning port even if that was the cause.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Regardless, I have a couple old iPhones that my children have outgrown (newer than mine, but small footprint) that I can maybe steal/de-solder the lightning port and solder it in the 6s-plus. I'm not doing this because it's practical, I'm doing it because I'm mad.

End of rant.

My main question is ... does "the phone is not drawing enough power" make sense to anyone when all I did was update IOS?

Thanks for any insights, and hope this post might help someone else to understand the issue they're having.

As someone else pointed out, you will get a more immediate response by clicking 'Get Support' at the top of this page. I encourage everyone here to do so, and start a live chat.

It's significant that your "widespread reporting" is all in the forums on this site. This problem is unknown outside these forums. I haven't found a single reference to it in a tech publication or YouTube channel etc., and as you point out, the iOS updates since 14.0 make no mention of it.

I’m having this problem right now on my 7 Plus. This has happened to me about 13 times already. What I’ve noticed is that whenever my phone is processing too much like Twitter, discord, YouTube, and some games. It’ll not charge. What I’ve started to do is put my phone on airplane mode, delete all notifications, and close all applications, shut it down then turn it back on, and then I connect to power. It’ll then take a second but it’ll start charging. Definitely a software issue.

Same problem.

Iphone 6splus.

After upgrading to 14.3, the Iphone stopped charging the battery.

I tried all "hints" but failed miserably.

I also installed a new battery, without success.

The Iphone tells me it is charged to 100% but in reality it's empty because it doesn't load though.

So i'm not able to downgrade.

As soon as i disconnect the charging cable, the Iphone powers down.

My Iphone turned into a 250€ special waste.

What i disgrace. Apple should hire professional programmers.

So what's the deal now ?

My iPhone SE is fairly new (about 3 months) and 2 nights ago, I updated to iOS 14.3. Last night I noticed my charger wasn’t working. I tried plugging it in to different wall receptacles but nothing.

I then plugged it in to my MacBook and it worked fine.

So I googled and found this thread and realized it must be the same thing happening to me (iOS upgrade causing charging issues)

All I thought was...am I going to have to charge this way until Apple fixes it and will it ever be fixed. I can’t carry my laptop around with me.

I was going to call Apple Support this morning but first I tried using a different block (found an old one) with my cord and Voila!!... It worked.

So either my new block just malfunctioned or the iOS upgrade really was at fault but maybe only affects the charging block?

Not sure if this will help anyone but hope so :)

I don’t have a fix. But it’s a real issue and clearly the idiot who thought optimizing charging is to blame! Apple needs to fix in software even if that means removing all code created when they came up with Optimizing charging feature. It’s a dumb not needed feature!!! And it’s off on my new iPhone 12 and still the bug is preventing charge on new known good cables! Wireless charging works so I am forced to put phone down to get by. #AppleNeedsToFixThisASAP

I have the same issue, two days ago my phone updated and the battery started going down like crazy, at first i managed to charge it in airplane mode to try to restore from backup and hard reset and all those, but now it wont even turn on long enough to unlock it and try to play around with the settings. It charges 1% and then turns off again, over and over. This is horrible! I can't believe I'm losing a perfectly good phone to such a stupid issue, it really feels like Apple is screwing us over.

I just spent an hour texting back-and-forth with an Apple rep who told me no one had reported this issue before. I have had it several times, I just bought new cables last week, they worked until yesterday‘s update. The rep spent 20 minutes researching the issue, came back and said The issue had never been reported. Obviously, he couldn’t find his way to these forums. It’s very frustrating.
