Apple Watch 6 wallet problem

The wallet app on my watch 6 is crashing when I use any store card with barcode.

I used wallet on my watch (series 6 with ios7.0.2) to buy a starbucks coffee. I opened the starbucks card from the wallet on the watch and used the bar code to buy a coffee. Closed the wallet app. Now the wallet will not open correctly with a double tap of the side button. I get a black screen. I tried to open the wallet app with the Icon and I still get black screen with the words "wallet" on top left and the time on top right.

After updating my fiancee's watch 3 with the latest software ios 7.0.2. we get the same errors.

Has anyone else have this problem?

Hi Everyone, After speaking with the Tier2 rep, there is an issue with the pairing with iPhone and Watch. The only option to resolve is a complete wipe and restore But Not from normal iTunes or iCloud backup.


> If you do not have iCloud storage purchase the 50Gb for [.99] one month.


>On iCloud settings make sure photos, contacts, messages, health, wallet, key chain are enabled.

a)Make sure you're connected to power and on WiFi


1:Create a list of all your apps

2:Make sure the key chain is updated with all your app information [username, email, pw] or 3rd party app like 1 password.

3:As for music If you have an iMAC or iPad and you share across devices your music will be restored.

4:Once complete go to iCloud backup and backup now. This will push all data. when finished.


Wipe data from iPhone and Apple Watch

1:Apple watch settings erase all content and settings but keep the cellular plan.

2:iPhone erase all content and settings.


Restore iPhone

1:Setup iPhone as new [manual] Do not restore from recent iCloud backup.

2:Once you re-add your account from iCloud all data photos, contacts, messages, health, wallet, the key chain will get pushed back down. estimate 1.2 hrs

3:Go into Wallet and re-add cards and go back through the verification process.

4:Re-add Apple watch manually not from backup.

5:Apple watch setup wallet app and re-add cards.

6:Reinstall all iOS apps.


>I did these steps on iOS 14.3 & Watch 7.2 and now the Apple watch wallet app works as expected, I have my QR Star bucks, Panera, dave n buster loaded back. I'm now finished update to iOS 14.4 and watch 7.3 working as expected.


-My only left-over issue was re-doing all my custom ring tones, as they're kept in the files app but cant be pushed so had to do those over again.


>Delete any Prior iTunes or iCloud backup and create a newer one to move forward.

Hello wildor,


It sounds like your Apple Watch Wallet isn't working with store cards, specifically Starbucks. Have you tried any other store cards to see if it is only related to the store?


Have you also tried using your iPhone to see if the behavior is the same on the phone? Also take a look at this for more information:

I tried restoring to factory setting, then adding everything fron scratch. still have problem. I went to AppleStore and they gave me a new watch (I only had mine for a month). When I got it home and and update apps and wallet, still have problem!!! The new watch was still on watchos 7.0. so I updated to 7.0.2. still problem. Maybe because the watch wallet and iphone wallet are connected the problem might be in the iphone? This is one tough problem to solve. I may have to reset iphone to factory setting and re-pair watch and phone. ugh

Thank you for your clear instructions and am really pleased this worked for you, sadly it hasn’t for me. 

I developed this problem after moving from my old iPhone 6s to new SE last month and tried every suggestion before yours. 


I followed your instructions to the letter and even deleted every card from my wallet before erasing all content and settings on iPhone and watch. 


After re downloading my apps and adding to wallet, the first time I tried closing down a store card the wallet crashed and went black. 


This has taken me about 5 hours with setting up as new without iTunes or iCloud back ups - having to go through all my settings and although I don’t have a lot of apps, I still had to re do my Home Screen with new folders etc. I also had to reset up a few apps like Google Authenticator.


I am at a loss at what else I can try and really hope Apple sorts this, as although powering off and on my Watch brings my Wallet back, it is not something I want to do every time I use a store card.


At least I tried this and now know the result.

I just did what you asked. I opened Wallet on my Series 6 Watch, then opened my Starbucks card. Since I'm sitting at home, I couldn't scan it, but I closed it as you said, then pressed the Digital Crown to close Wallet. I double-tapped the power button to open Wallet again and it worked just fine. I tried this with my Walgreens card as well and it still worked fine, no black screen, the Wallet opened.

I have this same problem. I have a 6 with iPhone 7 and all up to date software. I’ve only had the watch a month. I read another poster’s message about factory resetting the watch and the phone but that seems ridiculous! I’m not prepared to do that. I’m guess I’ll just have to use the store cards on my phone wallet which means I may as well pay with my phone too. What a faff! Hope this gets fixed in future updates!

Thank you for your reply. I was so very nearly there.

I have tried twice again and both times did as you suggested and deleted my watch from my iCloud devices before resetting watch. Then I reset iphone.


First time I tried to set up apps on watch it crashed.


I started process all over again and this time - I was over the moon because it worked for the first time in months.

Opened and closed my Costa card on my watch and no crashing.


I was literally just about to send a reply saying how fantastic that it now worked and would you believe it has now crashed and gone black again.


Powered watch off and on and wallet came back - tried again and consistently crashing when closing card.


Really don’t understand why this hasn’t worked for me as I have literally done everything manually from new and ensured my watch was nowhere in my iCloud devices/ account etc.


Thanks once again for your time with this.


I guess I now have a waiting game to see what happens.


It’s going to be a bit of a chore to finish resetting up my phone knowing that I haven’t achieved my goal but as I said before at least I tried.


Hopefully Apple will eventually sort this as they are obviously aware of the issue.

I have the same black screen problem on my Apple Watch when using the alle wallet! I bought my watch 6 today and set up everything. The the Wallet didn’t work properly. Already signed out and sign in and reset my watch from factory setting. Updated to watchOS 7.2


only with the top line “hold near to reader” and time and nothing else.


any solution to this? Thanks so much.
