Missing attachment "paper clip" icon and "Remove Attachment" command in Mac Mail (still unresolved)

This was asked many times and never resolved. The problem has been reported already in Sierra (2016) (and maybe earlier) and still persists today (Big Sur) (2021) !

Very often, in sent or received e-mails with attachments, the paper clip icon is not shown.

When this happens, also the menu command "Remove Attachments" is dimmed (unavailable).

It is only possible to delete the entire e-mail, not just the attachment.

This is a big problem for me, because I need to keep track of all the e-mails (cannot delete them), but in order to preserve space on my hard drive, I usually remove large or unnecessary attachments.

Over the years, I have found some workarounds, such as selecting multiple e-mail messages, of which at least one - hopefully - has the paper clip icon. This will make the "Remove Attachment" command available and I can delete the attachments in all selected messages, including those where the paper clip is not showing.

When there is no message with a paper clip to select, what sometimes works is that I forward an e-mail with an attachment (but no paper clip icon) to myself. With some luck, in the duplicate message the paper clip appears. So that I can apply the workaround described above.

The problem has been reported many times. Just a few examples:

here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7325302

and here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7729492

and here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252033935

and here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251663017

and here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252456339

and .... (many other places)

And you can be sure that in none of above discussions there is a real solution for it !!

I am just wondering if Apple is reading?

As suggested elsewhere, I have submitted countless product feedbacks to the developers of Apple Mail over the years with the frustrating feeling that nobody listens and cares.

They are more concentrated in implementing new sexy features (certainly not in Mail) and professionals who rely on mail for their daily work are left out in the dark.

I have spent hours with the technical support on the telephone and was treated like a fool (the lady told me that the problem did not exist and wanted to hang up).

I took my MacBook Pro to an Apple Store and showed the problem to a Genius: he acknowledged

that this is a real problem! He searched through the database and found many reports regarding the same problem. He promised to escalate the problem.

Now, many years later, here we are. The problem still exists. I am so desperate and frustrated.

For those interested in some technical detail:

I have MacOS Big Sur (clean install) running on a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro, my e-mail account uses IMAP (other users have reported the same problem with POP3 however, see links provided above). I experience the problem with both incoming and outgoing messages (more frequently with the latter ones), particularly with rather small attachments (e.g. a 1-page pdf). And yes, I have selected "download all attachments" in the Mail Preferences on all my e-mail accounts.

In my opinion, Mail fails to synchronize the attachment information with the mail server. Depending on the software and platform used by the e-mail provider (Exchange, others...) the problem can be more or less frequent.

Is there anyone there at Apple who is listening? Pleaseeeeeee!!!!!

Salutations magoooo,

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Apple Support Communities! It seems that there is a missing attachment "paper clip" icon in Mail for Mac. We will be honored to assist you!

Please follow all instructions in the article below:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

https://support.apple.com/HT201262

"If the issue continues in safe mode

If the issue continues while in safe mode, or your Mac restarts several times and then shuts down while starting up in safe mode, you should reinstall macOS and make sure that your Apple software and third-party apps are up to date.

If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode

If the issue doesn't continue while in safe mode, leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally. Then test for the issue again. The issue might be resolved.

If the issue returns after leaving safe mode, startup items are probably at fault. Apps can install such items in numerous places, and they aren't always easy to find or recognize. For that reason, you should first make sure that you've installed any available updates for your Apple software and third-party apps.

If updating your software doesn't help, try any of these solutions:

Test your login items.

To learn whether software in your user account is causing the issue, set up a new user account, then log in to it and try to reproduce the issue in that account.

Unplug all accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, USB hubs, and other nonessential devices. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.

Reinstall macOS.

If you still need help, please contact Apple Support."

Have a joyful day!

Dear mario49,

OK, so it seems that you are a robot :-)

In fact, your answer replicates what has been suggested in all other similar discussions that I cited and knowingly never solved the problem!

Nevertheless, I took your advice seriously and tried once again (I already did it before) to boot in safe mode. The result: same problem in safe mode and same problem after booting back in normal mode.

My test consisted of sending myself an e-mail with a single page pdf attachment. In the "Sent" folder, the message appears without paper clip and I cannot remove the attachment. The only option that I have is to delete the entire message.

I really wonder how you can seriously pretend people to reinstall macOS for such a bug, which has reportedly existed over various macOS generations!

In my case, I only recently updated to Big Sur and I did it with a clean install, exactly with the aim of getting rid of all old problems (including this one).

The result: same problem, right from day zero after installing Big Sur!

So please!!!

BTW, getting everything up and running after a clean install took me several days and it strikes me that you ask people to do this more or less like going and have a cup of coffee.

I also find it quite ridiculous (and dangerous) that you specialists always suggest the use of thermo-nuclear options against well defined problems and bugs. It is just funny that this time you did not suggest to reset the PRAM and the Power Manager. These two seem to be as well remedies for all evils according to what we can find in these forums.

Now let's get (almost) serious: let me explain where the problem is: it is in a small icon called "Mail.app":

It contains code (quite a lot of it: 28.7 MB in Bug Sur) and understandably there might be some line of code with a bug that was introduced probably in 2016 (or even before) and still lives there up to now.

It is time for Apple to acknowledge the problem and go back to work and fix it.

It has nothing to do with MacOS and will not be solved with MacOS reinstalls. It is a problem with Mail.app and we need a fix for that. Thank you.
